wins opener, has 7 out for team
The Summit Lady Patriots have 7 players turned out this year for basketball along with 2 new coaches. Lauren Stubbers is the only senior on the team and is new to the team this year as she had injury issues last season. Taylor Lustig is the lone returning junior. Returning sophomores are Erin Chmelik, Lexi Currier and Jessie Sonnen. A new sophomore this year is Claire Chmelik, who transferred in from Maryland. Freshman Claira Osborne is also new to the team this year. Alex Frei is the head coach this year with Kim Frei, who used to be the boys team assistant, serving as assistant coach. The team has 12 games scheduled, all league games. Summit again this year will not have a boys team. On Friday, Nov. 17, they opened their season with a narrow home win over Logos, 45-44. Summit built an 18-11 lead after 1 quarter and 28-16 at the half. They led 32-18 after 3 quarters and then had to hold on for the win as Logos mounted a fourth quarter rally. Logos took the lead late in the game and Sonnen came through with a lay-up with 24 seconds left that turned out to be the game-winning score. Lustig and freshman Claira Osborne were the big guns offensively for the Patriots with 22 and 15 points respectively. Osborne also led in rebounds with 15 and added 5 steals. Sonnen wound up with 4 points with Stubbers scoring 3 and Erin Chmelik 1.
