Letters to the editor from this week's Chronicle:

Redneck Review!
No. 137 - 12/4/17
A lot of time has been spent lately discussing the relative merits of Christianity, Marxism, and Islam.  Perhaps to the point of overkill and boredom!  After all, no one wants to hear the same thing over... and over...and over!  So that is the intent of this review!
However, it is an unwise generation that forgets to learn from the mistakes of the past which have doomed one society after another!  History can teach a harsh lesson, and woe to the generation which blindly ignores it and again has to pay the heavy price!
It is the contention here that our generation is no different from earlier ones, that we could well suffer the misfortune of repeating the suicidal choices made before!  And we leave this now, with one final claim, that choosing the road socialists would have us go down would be a disastrous mistake, and could well make us  just another example of people who failed to learn what history teaches so well... that SOCIALISM DOES NOT WORK!
Enough!  I rest my case!  And obviously because of the delightful differences in people as originally intended by the God that created us, there will be people who disagree with the conclusion above!  Is that not the way it should be?  Are any two people on earth exactly alike? Can any two people on earth be found who think exactly alike on every issue? Is it possible for it to be true in politics? Or even as close to home as in a typical marriage?
Perhaps fundamental to the differences of opinion one finds in every walk of life maybe related to a recent experience I had in the Mini Village here in Cottonwood.  Exiting the store the other day, I bumped into an old "salt of the earth" former student that was in my class a few decades ago.  No name here, but we had a very interesting discussion over the next several minutes, some topics entertaining, others borderline serious. Comments on the disasters hitting our country today, and the almost unending problems plaguing our national government suddenly ended when this old student said: "Mr. Wren, I remember something you said years ago in class!"  You said: "There are two kinds of freedom-One, the freedom to do what you want, and the other, the freedom to do what you ought!"
The statement struck me like a thunderbolt!  First, because I never expected a comment like that coming from a casual meeting ever! Second and frankly, it amazes me that any ofmy old students would remember anything I mentioned in class, especially from a hardworking, outdoor, physical labor type of individual!  THANK YOU! And the thought struck me immediately that his comment most likely provided an explanation for all the problems we had mentioned before.  Could it be that simple?
Think about it!  The "Freedom to do what you want" is running rampant today in our country, the type of freedom clung to by people who want it their way, who expect others to agree no matter what!  In politics, if you don't like the results of the last election, or the people elected, then exercise your freedom to complain, riot and defame any and all who disagree. Angry with some one, or the world in general?  Grab a gun and take out your frustration or anger on people who disagree, or for that matter, on anyone available for venting your frustration. Your spouse does not do what "you want," or agree with "your idea or thinking,".... "goodby dear!"
Maybe it makes more sense, to "do what you ought?" How about the "10 Commandments?

Dear Editor
Suppose you had a house fire tonight and no one came to help. November 22 a house burned on Clearcreek near Kooskia about 9 PM and the  Ridge Runner Fire Dept. was paged. After 2 pages  with no response Kooskia Fire Dept. was called out for mutual aid. We responded with 3 personnel (all who answered the page) and 2 trucks. One of our trucks was first on scene followed shortly by a Ridge Runner truck and the second Kooskia truck. 2 more pages brought more Ridge Runner people and equipment. The slow response didn't matter in this case as the fire was well underway before it was noticed and reported and the outcome would have been the same anyway. The point here is ALL local volunteer fire departments need more help. We do the best we can with the people we have but the time seems to be coming when NO ONE will respond to someone's fire. More property damage will result and lives may even be lost for lack of volunteers. Just a few volunteers can't be available 24/7. PLEASE consider becoming a firefighter. Young or old, male or female, YOU are needed. Training will be provided. Help your neighbors and yourself. Ask around and contact your local fire department.
Thanks
Lucky Brandt
Assistant Chief-Kooskia Fire Department
