Lady Pirates win at Lapwai
The Prairie Lady Pirates stayed unbeaten with a pair of wins this past week but may have lost their leading scorer for the rest of the season to injury.
Prairie won at Lapwai 58-42, for their first win at Lapwai since December 12, 2000 when they won 47-44 as part of a 19-0 regular season. The following year, when Prairie lost to Lapwai in the state title game they had just 1 regular season loss…at Lapwai. Unfortunately they also lost Angela Wemhoff to an injury with 1:55 left in the third quarter. 
On Friday, in their first game without Wemhoff, they beat Grangeville 34-30 to lead off the Idaho County Shootout at Cottonwood.
At Lapwai
India Peery got the scoring started and Jordyn Higgins followed with a free throw for a for a 3-0 lead. Lapwai pulled within 1 at the line but Angela Wemhoff answered with her only 3-pointer of the season.Jordyn Higgins makes a lay-up at Lapwai. After a Lapwai basket Wemhoff responded with a 3-point play as she was fouled on a lay-up. She added a basket on an inbounds play. Sydney Bruner scored a free throw and Wemhoff drove to the basket to make it 14-4. After a Lapwai 3, Wemhoff ended the first quarter with a 12 foot jumper just before the buzzer to make it 16-7.
In the second quarter Jordyn Higgins scored a driving lay-up, Josie Peery scored a free throw and Jordyn added 2 free throws to make it 22-9 with 4:20 left in the half. Not long after that Angela Wemhoff picked up her third foul and went to the bench for the rest of the half.
Lapwai cut the lead to 22-13 but Prairie responded with a basket by Jordyn Higgins and a driving lay-up by India Peery.
Lapwai twice more got within 9 but each time Prairie responded as they led by 13 at the half, 35-22.
Lapwai opened the third quarter with a 3-pointer but India Peery responded with a 3-pointer of her own. 
Angela Wemhoff sank 3 of 4 free throws and Jordyn Higgins added a lay-up for a 43-27 lead with 4:41 left.
Lapwai scored twice to cut the lead to 12 when disaster struck. Angela Wemhoff was driving in for a lay-up and in trying to avoid picking up a charge, as she had 3 fouls already, landed awkwardly on her leg appearing to hyperextend the knee and crumpled to the floor.
Lapwai got within 9 on a 3 but India Peery ended the third quarter with a driving lay-up to make it 45-34.
Lapwai put together a 2-8 run to open the fourth quarter and pull within 5 at 47-42 with 3:38 left to play. They got their points off of Prairie turnovers.
Coach Lori Mader called a timeout to try and settle her team down and on Lapwai’s next two possessions, Leah Higgins made a steal and threw the ball ahead to cousin Jordyn Higgins who scored transition lay-ups as she beat Lapwai down the floor.
A defensive rebound by India Peery led to a pair of free throws by Jordyn Higgins. A defensive rebound by Bruner led to a transition lay-up by India Peery. Jordyn Higgins added another lay-up and Theresa Wemhoff a free throw as Prairie ended the game with an 11-0 scoring run.
Jordyn Higgins wound up with 21 points shooting 7 for 12 from the field and 7 for 9 at the line.
Angela Wemhoff added 15 points with India Peery scoring 13, Leah Higgins and Josie Peery scored 3 each and Theresa Wemhoff 1.
Prairie held a 45-31 rebounding edge led by Josie Peery with 10, Leah Higgins with 9 and Bruner with 8.
Jordyn Higgins, Leah Higgins and India Peery each had 3 steals and Angela Wemhoff and Leah Higgins each had 3 assists.

Prairie had 26 turnovers while Lapwai had 21.
The JV team also won by a score of 33-20.
Prairie took a 5-0 lead and led 11-2 at the end of the first quarter. Ciara Chaffee was 4 for 6 at the line in the quarter for 4 points and Madison Shears was 2 for 3 from the field, also for 4 points.
Lapwai got within 6 at 15-9 in the second quarter but Shears score 3 of 4 free throws and Ellea Uhlenkott hit a 3-pointer as Prairie finished the half with a 6-0 run and a 21-9 halftime lead.
Prairie hit just 1 of 8 shots in the third quarter but added 3 of 4 free throws as they outscored Lapwai 5-4 in the period.
In the fourth quarter Lapwai scored 5 straight to pull within 8 at 26-18 but Chaffee scored the next 7 points in the game to put Prairie up 33-18 with 1:25 left. Lapwai added a final basket to make it 33-20.
Chaffee wound up as the leading scorer with 13 points, hitting 7 of 9 at the line. Shears scored 9 with Uhlenkott scoring 4, Kendra Duclos 3 and Kodie Tidwell and Halle Klapprich 2 each. 
Prairie had a 42-34 rebounding edge led by Duclos with 13. Chaffee and Tidwell added 8 each.
Shears and Chaffee each had 6 steals with Duclos and Tidwell adding 4 each. Shears also had 3 assists.
Prairie was 9 for 37 from the field, 24% and 14 for 27 at the line, 52%. Lapwai was 9 for 49 from the field, 18%, and didn’t even attempt a free throw.

Vs. Grangeville
At the Idaho County Shootout Friday, Dec. 15 at Cottonwood, Prairie was playing without a starter they had in the previous game while Grangeville added one they did not have in the first matchup.India Peery and Theresa Wemhoff double team a Grangeville player.
It turned out to be a much more competitive game than the first matchup.
Prairie started strong as they jumped out to a 12-2 lead with Josie Peery scoring 6 points and Jordyn Higgins adding 4 with Leah Higgins, starting in Angela Wemhoff’s place, adding the other 2.
Grangeville hit a 3 just before the end of the quarter to get them going.
The Bulldogs outscored Prairie 2-8 to pull within 1 point at 14-13. Jordyn Higgins had Prairie’s only points on a shot just inside the 3-point arc.
Bruner finally broke the run with a free throw and Leah Higgins scored a putback for a 17-13 lead. Grangeville added a basket just before halftime to make it a 2-point game.
Leah Higgins opened the second half scoring with a 3-point play. She added another basket and assisted on a basket by Kristyna Krogh that made it 24-16.
Grangeville scored the final 5 points of the quarter to pull within 24-21 at the quarter break.
Grangeville kept up the run to start the fourth as they finished off a 0-12 run that gave them a 24-28 lead.
India Peery scored a 3 with 5:22 left to cut the lead to 1 and Jordyn Higgins connected from 16 feet to give Prairie back the lead. A putback by Josie Peery, who had missed much of the second and third quarters due to foul trouble, made it 31-28. 
A steal by Josie Peery led to a 1 and 1 conversion by Jordyn Higgins that made it 33-28 and capped of a 9-0 run by the Pirates. 
Grangeville scored to pull back within 3 but Leah Higgins scored the game’s final point with 22 seconds left.
Jordyn Higgins led all scorers with 15 points with Josie Peery adding 8. Leah Higgins scored 5, India Peery 3, Krogh 2 and Bruner 1.
Grangeville had the rebounding advantage 31-41. Leah Higgins led the Pirates with 10 with Josie Peery adding 7.
Leah Higgins had 8 steals and India Peery had 3 assists.
Prairie was 14 for 51 from the field, 27%, and 5 for 13 at the line, 38%. Grangeville was 11 for 43 from the field, 26%, and 5 for 6 at the line, 83%.
Prairie improves to 10-0 on the season and 6-0 in league play.
On Wednesday, Dec. 13, the girls C team beat Grangeville 49-18 and the JVs won 37-15 to stay unbeaten.
