Summit loses at Logos
In their first game since Dec. 13, the Summit Lady Patriots fell 44-71 to Logos at Moscow Saturday, Jan. 6.
Summit beat Logos the first time they played and started out like they would do it again as they made 5 of their first 6 shots and took a 10-5 lead. Erin Chmelik and Taylor Lustig each had a pair of baskets and Claira Osborne scored the other.Lexi Currier drives past a pick set by Jessie Sonnen in Summit’s game at Logos.
Logos then threw a full-court press at them and things quickly came unraveled.
Logos finished the first quarter with a 1-20 run with a Lexi Currier free throw being Summit’s only point in the run.
Summit lost their shooting eye as they missed their final 8 shots of the quarter and that’s when they weren’t turning the ball over against the press.
In the second quarter Summit was able to adjust and break the press but the shooting woes continued as they hit just 1 of 19 shots and 4 of 8 free throws.
Meanwhile Logos’ Maddie Wintz, a 5’11” guard, was outscoring Summit all by herself with 12 first quarter points and 11 more in the second. Summit trailed 17-47 at the half.
In the third quarter Summit was down 20-53 when they put a rally together. Jessie Sonnen scored a lay-up and got fouled off a long inbounds pass from Lustig. Her 3-point play started a 14-3 run that cut the deficit to 34-56. Within that run Summit had a 10-0 run with Chmelik, Lustig, Osborne, Sonnen and Osborne again each scoring baskets.
Summit still trailed 36-61 after 3 quarters.
Logos out scored them 8-10 in the fourth.
Lustig wound up with 12 points to lead the Patriots. Chmelik, Currier and Osborne each scored 9 and Sonnen scored 5. Lauren Stubbers was unable to play leaving Claire Chmelik as Summit’s only available sub.
Despite giving up a height advantage at every position, Summit outrebounded the Knights 51-48. Osborne had 17 rebounds with Lustig pulling down 15 and Erin Chmelik 13. Logos has 8 players on their varsity roster who are 5’10” or taller including all 5 starters.
Currier had 4 steals and Osborne had 3 assists.
Summit was 16 for 68 from the field, 24%, and 12 for 23 at the line, 52%. Logos was 32 for 77 from the field, 42%, and 7 for 11 at the line, 64%.
Summit is now 4-3 both on the season and in league play.
