Lady Pirates win District Opener
The Prairie Lady Pirates had little difficulty winning their District Tournament opener as they jumped out to a 19-0 lead on their way to a 54-16 win over 5th seeded Potlatch Wednesday, Jan. 31 at the LCSC Activity Center.Jordyn Higgins scores 2 of her game-high 22 points against Potlatch at District.
That win put them in the championship game against Lapwai Tuesday, Feb. 6. If Prairie won they advance to state as the District Champion for the first time since 2012. If they lost they play again on Wednesday, Feb. 7 at 7:30 p.m. for second place. The winner of that game plays Wallace on Saturday, Feb. 10 at Post Falls High School at 1 p.m. for a trip to State.
Prairie came out against Potlatch and made their first 4 shot attempts, 2 by India Peery and 1 each by Josie Peery and Jordyn Higgins. Two of those baskets were set up by steals.
Leah Higgins scored inside. Josie Peery scored 5 straight points and Jordyn Higgins scored 2 more baskets to make it 19-0.
Potlatch finally got on the scoreboard with 45 seconds left in the opening quarter to make it 19-2.
Leah Higgins opened the second quarter with a pair of free throws and added a midrange shot after a Potlatch basket. Jordyn Higgins scored twice and Sarah ross scored in the lane to make it 29-4 with 2:31 left in the half.
Each team scored just 2 points in the final 2:30 of the half with Potlatch twice going 1 for 2 at the line while Jordyn Higgins scored on a putback to make it 31-6 at the half.
Sydney Bruner scored twice to open the second half and India Peery followed a Potlatch free throw with a basket to make it 37-7. 
After another Potlatch free throw Jordyn Higgins sank the game’s first 3-pointer.
After 2 more Potlatch free throws Jordyn went on a 7-0 run with 2 baskets and another 3-pointer. She then picked up a pair of assists with Alexis Hiler scoring and Leah Higgins sinking a buzzer beating 3 to make it 52-10 after 3 quarters.
The fourth quarter was played with a running clock and Leah Higgins was the only starter to see much playing time and scored Prairie’s only 2 points of the final frame.
Jordyn Higgins wound up with 22 points to lead the scoring with Leah Higgins also in double figures with 11. Josie Peery scored 7, India Peery 6, Bruner 4 and Hiler and Ross 2 each.
Prairie dominated on the boards 51-26. Josie Peery led the team with 11 rebounds with Bruner adding 10 and Leah Higgins 7.
India Peery had 4 steals and 5 assists. Jordyn Higgins and Bruner added 4 assists each.
Prairie was 24 for 63 from the field, 38%, and 3 for 5 at the line, 60%. Potlatch was 5 for 39 from the field, 13%, and 6 for 12 at the line, 50%.
When Prairie played at Potlatch the Loggers had five 3 pointers and no 2-pointers. This time they had five 2-pointers and no 3-pointers.
Prairie is now 20-1 on the season.
