Lady Pirates finsih second at State, again
For the fifth straight year the Prairie Lady Pirates reached the state championship game and for the fourth straight year they had to settle for second place. For the first time in those five years though the opponent wasn’t Lapwai as Prairie lost to Oakley 31-33 in the championship game Saturday, Feb. 17 at the Idaho Center in Nampa.
Prairie reached the championship game by beating District 3 champion Rimrock 71-24 on Thursday, Feb. 15, and District 4 champion Shoshone 51-38 on Friday, Feb. 16. Both those games were at Columbia High School in Nampa.
Vs. Rimrock
Prairie overwhelmed Rimrock right from the state as they jumped out to a 9-0 lead. Jordyn Higgins scored 7 of those first 9 points.India Peery is about to sink one of her four 3-pointers in the Shoshone game at State.
Rimrock got on the board with 2:35 left in the quarter on one of the few times they broke Prairie’s press. Prairie came right back with a 3 by India Peery and a steal by India that led to a free throw by Jordyn Higgins.
Prairie led 13-4 at the end of the first quarter. Rimrock was only able to attempt 5 shots as Prairie forced 12 turnovers.
In the second quarter Prairie stepped it up a notch on offense scoring 26 points, much of it fueled by another 11 turnovers by Rimrock.
Theresa Wemhoff came off the bench to score 7 in the quarter and collect a bunch of steals on defense. Josie Peery and Leah Higgins added 6points each in the quarter as Prairie took a 39-11 lead at the half.
Prairie outscored Rimrock 16-5 in the third quarter with India Peery stepping up with 9 points in the quarter while Wemhoff added 4 more and Josie Peery added 3.
With a 55-16 lead heading into the fourth quarter, the starters were able to sit out the period and rest up for the games to come while the subs outscored Rimrock 16-8 in the final period. There is no running clock in state games.
India Peery wound up as the leading scorer with 15 points with Wemhoff scoring 13, Jordyn Higgins 10, Josie Peery 9, Leah Higgins 8, Kodie Tidwell 5, Kristyna Krogh 4, Alexis Hiler 3 and Ciara Chaffee and Kendra Duclos 2 each.
Priarie had a 36-31 edge on the boards. Josie Peery had 8 to lead Prairie with Leah Higgins adding 6.
Wemhoff had 8 steals and Josie Peery 7 as Prairie recorded 32 steals while forcing Rimrock into 43 turnovers.
Jordyn Higgins and Krogh each had 3 assists while India Peery and Madison Shears, in her first game back from injury, had 2 each.
Prairie was 28 for 66 from the field, 42%, and 7 for 16 at the line, 44%. Rimrock was 8 for 32 from the field, 25%, and 6 for 9 at the line, 67%.

Vs. Shoshone
District 4 champion Shoshone came out in a 2-3 zone and basically dared Prairie to beat them from the outside. So they did. 
India Peery opened the scoring with a 3-pointer from the corner and Josie Peery drove inside for a basket for a 5-0 lead.
Shoshone came back with 6 straight to take what turned out to be their only lead of the game. Jordyn Higgins and India Peery each scored a 3-pointer and Alexis Hiler sJosie Peery heads upcourt after stealing the ball against Shoshone.cored to make it 13-6.
After two Shoshone free throws Jordyn Higgins drove through the defense for a lay-up to make it 15-8 at the end of the first quarter.
Jordyn Higgins scored Prairie’s first 7 points of the second quarter on 2 baskets and a 3-pointers and India Peery added a free throw and her third 3 of the half as Prairie held a 26-22 lead at the half. Shoshone hit 2 of their own 3-pointers in the quarter to help them cut into the lead.
In the third quarter Shoshone came out and outscored Prairie 3-7 to tie the game at 29 with 4:27 left in the period. Shoshone wouldn’t score again until the 4:22 mark of the fourth quarter while Prairie scored 11 to take a double-digit lead.
Josie Peery started the run with a basket inside and India Peery then connected on her fourth 3 out of 4 attempts in the game. India added a basket to make it 36-29 after 3 quarters.
Josie Peery scored twice inside on feeds from Leah Higgins to make it 40-29.
The closest Shoshone got the rest of the way was 8 points following a 3-pointer that made it 44-36 with 3:10 left in the game.
Prairie then outscored them 7-2 the rest of the way with Josie Peery scoring 4 of those points.
For the game India Peery scored 17 points to lead the scoring, hitting 5 of 6 shots and 3 of 4 free throws. Josie Peery scored 12 of her 14 points in the second half after the first half 3-pointers loosened things up inside. Jordyn Higgins scored 13 with Sydney Bruner adding 3 and Leah Higgins and Hiler 2 each.
Prairie dominated the boards 27-12 with Josie Peery posting a double-double with 11 rebounds.
Leah Higgins, Josie Peery and India Peery each had 3 steals while Leah Higgins had 6 assists.
Prairie was 18 for 29 from the field, 62%, and 9 for 12 at the line, 75%, while Shoshone was 13 for 40 from the field, 33%, and 8 for 11 at the line, 73%. Prairie was 6 for 8 from 3-point range, 75%.

Vs. Oakley
In their fifth straight championship game and the sixth in the last 7 years, Prairie finally faced a non-White Pine League foe in Oakley.
Oakley came out in a tight man-to-man defense and kept Prairie from making a basket in the opening quarter.Leah Higgins scores in the championship game.
Prairie scored first on a pair of free throws by India Peery but Oakley came back with 6 straight points before Leah Higgins added a free throw with 30 seconds left to make it 3-6.
There were only 14 total shots attempted as both teams ran patient offenses, looking for the opening they could exploit.
In the second quarter Prairie turned things around and limited Oakley to just 2 points.
Leah Higgins scored inside to cut the lead to 1 but Oakley answered by breaking Prairie’s press.
Josie Peery scored twice inside to give Prairie the lead and Leah Higgins also scored inside to make it 11-8 at the half.
Oakley scored first in the second half but India Peery answered with a 3-pointer on an inbounds feed from Jordyn Higgins. That was the only 3-pointer scored in the game on either side.
Oakley came back with a pair of baskets to pull within 2. An inbounds feed to Josie Peery for a lay-up pushed it back to 4. 
An Oakley basket was answered with a free throw by Bruner then Oakley scored 4 straight to take a 19-20 lead into the fourth quarter.
Josie Peery converted a 3-point play to put Prairie back on top but Oakley answered a minute later to tie the game at 22-22.
Leah Higgins made the second of 2 free throws to put Prairie back on to but Oakley scored 2 baskets to take a 23-26 lead with 3:47 to play.
India Peery made the first of 2 free throws but Oakley answered with a basket to take their biggest lead of the game at 24-28.
A basket by Leah Higgins was answered with 1:58 left by Oakley to make it 26-30.
With 1:30 left Leah Higgins sank both ends of a 1 and 1 to cut the lead to 28-30. A defensive rebounds by Bruner led to another free throw by Leah to cut the lead to 1 with 45.7 seconds left. 
Oakley countered with a free throw but Josie Peery scored 2 free throws with 27.2 seconds left to tie the game at 31-31.
Oakley then went to their 6’ post, Rachael Mitton, who banked one in from 6 feet out to give Oakley a 2 point lead with about 5 seconds to play.
Prairie quickly got the ball across halfcourt where coach Lori Mader got a timeout called. The clock showed just 0.1 seconds left but a half second got added to make it 0.6 seconds left.
Mader set up a play to get India Peery the ball for the final shot. India had a good open look from just outside the 3-point line that would have won it for Prairie but it bounced out and Oakley had their first ever state title and Prairie had their fourth straight second place finish.
Leah Higgins wound up with 13 points to lead Prairie in scoring with Josie Peery adding 11. India Peery scored 6 and Bruner 1.
Jordyn Higgins wasn’t able to shake loose from her defender to get an open shot as her only shot attempt of the game was blocked. Mitton led Oakley with 12 points, 10 in the second half.
Prairie had a 26-24 edge on the boards led by Josie Peery with 8 and Leah Higgins with 7.
Bruner had 2 steals and Jordyn Higgins had 4 assists.
Prairie was 11 for 32 from the field, 34%, and 12 for 19 at the line, 63%. Oakley was 14 for 31 from the field, 45%, and 5 for 9 at the line, 56%. The Hornets were 6 for 6 from the field in the fourth quarter while Prairie was just 2 for 9. Prairie kept it close by going 8 for 12 at the line compared to 1 for 5 for Oakley.
The loss evens Prairie’s record at 9-9 in state championship games. That’s 18 state championship game appearances in 30 state tournament trips over the 42 year history of the program.
Prairie made it to state from 1976-1982, 1984, 1986-1992, 1997-2002, 2007 and 2011-2018. They won titles in 1977-78, 1981-82, 1988, 1992, 1997, 2012 and 2014 and were second in 1980, 1989, 1999, 2001, 2002 and 2015-2018.
