Pirates win big at Culdesac
The Prairie Lady Pirates had little trouble winning their season opening softball game as they won 32-2 Thursday, March 15 at Culdesac. Prairie took advantage of a ton of walks and hit batters as well as 14 hits. Josie Peery walked to lead off the game and sole second. Noelle Uhlenkott singled Peery to third. Uhlenkott then stole second, drawing a throw as Peery scored the game’s first run. Uhlenkott went to third on an errant throw. Uhlenkott then scored on a wild pitch. Ross walk as did Kodie Tidwell and Leah Higgins to load the bases. Ross wound up scoring on a wild pitch and then India Peery tripled to right to score both Tidwell and Higgins. India Peery scored on Sierah Poxleitner’s sacrifice fly to left. Alexis Hilerwalked and Josie Peery came up for the second time and hit a 2-0 pitch over the left field fence for a 2-run homer to make it 8-0, which is how the first inning ended. Leah Higgins set Culdesac down in order to bring the Lady Pirates back to the plate. Prairie sent 24 hitters to the plate in the second inning and scored 20 runs. The first 6 batters all reached on 2 walks, 2 hit batters, an error and a 2-run double down the left field line by Poxleitner. Culdesac then got 2 outs but Prairie then sent 15 more hitters to the plate. After 4 straight walks, Culdesac changed pitchers. India Peery greeted the new pitcher with an infield single that scored a run. A walk, a bloop single by Alexis Hiler, a hit batter and a 2-run double by Uhlenkott followed. After 2 more walks, Tidwell beat out and infield single. After another walk India Peery came up again and crushed the ball to right center for a 2-run double. Poxleitner followed with a 2-run single before Culdesac was able to get out of the inning. Higgins again set down Culdesac in order. After 2 innings Culdesac had sent just 6 batters to the plate while each of Prairie’s hitters had come to the plate 4 times. In the top of the third coach Jeff Martin sent 5 straight pinch-hitters to the plate with the starters re-entering in the bottom half of the inning. Sydnee Bruegeman picked up a single hitting for Uhlenkott while Ashton Landers drew a walk. In the bottom of the third Higgins gave up her first hit on a single to right but the runner never got past second base. In the top of the fourth Martin sent 4 more pinch-hitters to the plate with Madison Shears beating out an infield single for the only hit. In the bottom of the fourth, Higgins got a quick out but then gave up back to back doubles and a sacrifice fly as Culdesac put 2 runs on the board. She gave up a walk and a hit batter before getting out of the inning with another strikeout. In the top of the fifth the starters were all back in the hitting order and sent 10 hitters to the plate. Josie Peery led off with a triple to right and scored when Uhlenkott reached on a passed ball on strike 3. After Ross was hit by a pitch, Culdesac got 2 groundouts. 4 straight walks followed before the final out came with the bases loaded. Prairie had added 4 more runs to push their total to 32. Higgins gave up a couple more walks in the bottom of the fifth but got out of the inning without any runs scoring. Higgins wound up allowing 2 runs on 3 hits with 6 strikeouts, 3 walks and a hit batsman. Prairie had 14 hits in the game led by India Peery with a single, a double and a triple and 6 RBI. Uhlenkott also had 3 hits with a double and 2 singles and 3 RBI. Josie Peery had a triple and a homer with 2 RBI and scored 4 runs. Poxleitner had a single and a double and 5 RBI.
