Letters to the editor from this week's Chronicle:

Redneck Review!
No. 167 - 7/2/2018
"Peace, peace... but there is no peace."  Recent articles in the Tribune have caused my anticipated topic for this week to be put on the back burner!  HATRED is the key today!
Twice in the past week, blaring headlines reported deaths or serious injuries of several individuals, some small children, by a demented individual wielding a knife as a weapon.
Just what is going on anyway?  Well, it should come as no surprise! There is no reason to believe it is going to change either!  A quick comment... will we now be hearing calls to eliminate every knife and sharp instrument that could be used for such purposes?
No, it should be no surprise!  Recently this article has been stressing the reality of history repeating itself, and the claim that those who are not familiar with the mistakes of the past are doomed to repeat them. And once again, headlines tell us that this is indeed true!
Does the past tell us what it was that created a favorable climate for the violence and the death we are experiencing today? And what might be the remedy?  First, the remedy!
To begin,  there is the reality of the God man Christ, whose birth some 2000+ years ago put the stress on love of neighbor, the Ten Commandments, and the teaching that each of us is a child of God and a spiritual relative to everyone in the world around us. Recall His teaching that the most important commandment was "You must love the Lord your God with your whole heart and soul, and your neighbor as yourself." We are all immortal we were taught, and that death will present all of us with the choice of eternal bliss in heaven, or an eternity of pain in hell!
Now, straying into a non "political correct" area today, brash and proud individuals exist everywhere who claim this is all hogwash. That everyone of us can do our own thing, the heart of the "Me too" movement, and the claim made here repeatedly in the past that the mentality of "Do it my way" is running rampant in the world today!
Bluntly, is it not true that we have strayed far from our Declaration of Independence which says "All men are created equal, and they are endowed by their Creator with inalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness?" And very definitely, have we not abandoned the early Christians who founded this country, and who for the most part, lived or tried to live by the Ten Commandments?
Even in my "short" lifetime, we have moved steadily away from a society which in public schools like my first grade in Stites, ID, we started each day with the Our Father.  And as a fifth grade student in the Grangeville school system, we began each day with a reading from the Bible!  My how times have changed! Are these practices not taboo today?
And what has taken over in their place? Bluntly we claim that HATRED called for by atheist Karl Marx and his communism, and its predecessor, socialism, and why not call a spade a spade, rampant liberalism, is now the calling card of many of our elite leaders today, and by far too many of our youth, so-called millennials!  And definitely by a large majority of our national press and television programs!  Bad!  (Concluded next week, with PROOF!)
P.S. And a happy and patriotic 4th of July to each and every one of you!
Jake Wren
