Letters to the editor from this week's Chronicle:

Redneck Review!
No. 170 - 7/23/18
Old age and an occasional burst of common sense warns me that it might be past the time to back off a bit from the negative tone of some of these last reviews, and turn to topics that are a bit more pleasant and positive!  That goal will be pursued next week!
But then again, what should one think about the news that keeps popping up recently?
Last week, we commented on the historical fact that the 100 year old movement which had its beginnings in Russia in 1917, 101 years ago!,  politically endorsing ATHEISM, is alive and well in the world today, and is making significant inroads in our own country. No time to prove here, but research proves that the percentage of individuals who claim that label in the U.S. has grown significantly in the last 50 years, while the percentage of Americans who claim to be Christian has dropped!  Even casual research tells us that the Christian percentage here has dropped from 96% in 1900 to around 84% in 2000, and is down another one percent today, while Americans today who claim to be atheist, agnostic, or a member of the "nones" is about 25%: (Atheists - 3%+, agnostic - 4%, and "nones" - "no religion" - 23%).
And when one remembers that the heart of Christianity stresses love and brotherhood, while Marxist atheism preaches hate and conflict, and agnostics and the "nones" tend to favor the "me too" or "do it my way" mentality, it does give a person cause for concern!
And note nothing is being said here about the increased presence of Islam in our country and especially in parts of Western Europe.  Their philosophy and history of using blatant force to coerce converts into their religion also is a bit unnerving!
But all of the above as well as the topics discussed the last couple of weeks is only a matter of concern if a person is keeping up with historical and current events!
Consider for example, comments on the current state of California which appeared in the June issue of AFA,  the American Family Association, a 40-year old Christian organization dedicated to keeping the teachings of Christ alive in our country. We quote from that issue!
"Lunacy is alive and well and living in California.  And if the recent predictions of two "secular progressive" thinkers come to pass, it's headed for your town. Here is just a sampling...that is going on:
"State law REQUIRES  pro-life, crisis pregnancy centers to inform clients where they can go to get an abortion--and how to pay for it.
"In the state's public middle and high schools, students are required to sit through sex education classes that promote homo sexuality and transgender ideology--with no opt out provision for parents who want their children spared.
"For those who do not want to identify as male or female, the state allows a "non-binary" option for gender selection on the state's driver's licenses."
And the two "progressive" thinkers? Peter Leyden and Ruy Teixeira who wrote recently that "California is the future of American politics, and it is only 15 years away.  Trump is the last gasp of the conservative era... and America is going to turn Blue (Democrat) and go through a fundamental reinvention. Conservatives will be completely discredited and marginalized to the sidelines of politics."  Hmmm!  Is this possibly  a serious matter of concern?
