Special 9/11 flag run tribute
The Lewis-Clark State College Veterans’ Network is helping sponsor a special memorial tribute to those involved and affected by 9/11 by having flags carried from Lewiston to Moscow on Sept. 9.
The event will start at 8:46 a.m., the same time the first plane crashed into the World Trade Center in New York on Sept. 11, 2001. In all, four coordinated terrorist attacks by al-Qaeda took place against the United State that morning. The attacks killed nearly 3,000 people, injured more than 6,000 others and caused over $10 billion in damages.
The Lewiston to Moscow flag event will honor those involved, recognize local first responders for what they do on a daily basis, and pay tribute to veterans who have responded to domestic threats on different levels, according to Stephen Tamm, coordinator of Veterans’ Services at LCSC.
The flag walk will start at the Discover Center Amphitheater in Hells Gate State Park and officials are hoping to have two-person shifts walking with the United States flag and the Flag of Honor for 1-2 miles through Lewiston. The route will continue up the Spiral Highway and north on Highway 95 to Moscow, where the day will wrap up with a memorial barbecue for first responders and those who participated in the event at 4 p.m. in the downtown area.
The public is invited to volunteer to help carry the flags, provide transportation to the flag carriers, or line the route of the event. Those who participate in the walk will receive a Mission43 9/11 Moving Tribune Patch.

The LCSC Veterans’ Network came up with the idea after Zachary Tibbits, president of the LCSC Veterans’ Network group, represented the college at the Student Veterans of America Northwest Regional Conference in Tacoma last spring and approached the University of Idaho delegate about collaborating on the project. Marines of the Palouse of Moscow stepped in to collaborate on planning the Moscow events. Mission43 has provided logistical and marketing support throughout the process and will be sponsoring the BBQ and making contributions to regional agencies and participating organizations.
The event is also being sponsored by Marines of the Palouse and Mission43. Mission43 is designed to give current and former Idaho military members and their spouses the resources for a successful transition after leaving the service.
