Lady Pirates have busy week
The Prairie Lady Pirates had a busy week of volleyball as they won in 3 games at Kamiah, lost in 3 games at home to Troy, won 2 of 5 matches at the Border Battle in Pomeroy and then lost again in 3 games at Troy.
At Kamiah
The Lady Pirates swept away Kamiah by scores of 25-9, 25-14 and 25-6 at Kamiah Tuesday, Sept. 18.Kristyna Krogh makes a pass against Kamiah as Alexis Hiler looks on.
As evidenced by the scores Prairie had little trouble against Kamiah. After trading sideouts to open the first game, Jordyn Higgins scored a kill then served 8 straight points to give Prairie a 10-1 lead. She had 5 aces while Alexis Hiler had a kill and a block and Ellea Poxleitner added a kill.
Kamiah got back within 6 at 13-7 before missing a serve. Hiler served 3 straight points, 2 aces plus a kill by Higgins, then after trading sideouts, Kristyna Krogh nearly served out the game. Krogh served Prairie to a 24-8 lead with 4 aces plus a kill on a tip and Higgins added a kill as well. A net violation ended Krogh’s run but Kamiah missed the following serve giving Prairie the game.
The second game started slow for Prairie with Kamiah tying the score at 4-4 and again at 8-8.
Prairie took the lead for good on a kill by Theresa Wemhoff at 9-8. She then served Prairie to a 12-8 lead.
Kamiah got back within 2 at 13-11 and were only 4 points down at 18-14. At that point Poxleitner scored a kill sending Madison Shears to the service line. Shears then served out the game. She had 3 aces while Wemhoff had 2 kills and Hiler had 1. On the game winning point Shears made a tough dig of a Kamiah spike, passing the ball to Krogh who set up Wemhoff for the winning kill.
Kamiah took their only lead of the night in the third game at 2-3 then missed a serve. Higgins served 8 straight points to put Prairie up 11-3. She had 2 aces while Wemhoff had 3 kills. Hiler added 2 back row kills and Higgins got in on the act with a back row kill as well.
The run ended on a spike that went long but Kamiah only scored 2 more points and one of those was a net hit by Prairie. Shears and Ashton Landers each served 4 straight points and Wemhoff finished off the match with 3 straight points.
For the match Wemhoff had 13 kills, 2 assists and 2 aces. Hiler had 9 kills, including a block, and 2 aces. Higgins had 7 kills and 9 aces. Poxleitner had 4 kills. Krogh had 3 kills, 21 assists and 8 aces. Sierra McWilliams had 1 kill and 3 assists. Hope Schwartz had 1 kill, 1 assist and 2 aces. Shears had 1 assist and 4 aces. Landers had 4 assists and 3 aces.
The JV team won all 3 of their games by scores of 25-18, 25-21 and 15-13.
In the opening game Anna Kaschmitter served Prairie to a 5-0 lead on 2 aces plus 3 kills by Ellea Uhlenkott, but Kamiah answered with 7 straight points to take their first lead.
Prairie didn’t lead again until Halle Klapprich served 3 straight aces to put Prairie up 19-16. After a trade of sideouts, Uhlenkott served Prairie to a 23-17 lead with 2 aces plus a kill by Sydnee Bruegeman. After a sideout, Kaschmitter scored a kill on a second touch tip and with Delaney Lockett serving, Klapprich scored the game-winning kill.
Prairie fell behind 0-3 in the second game and although they tied the score at 4-4, they didn’t take their first lead until 10-9 on a serve by Uhlenkott. That lead didn’t last long and Prairie fell behind by as many as 4 at 11-15.
They finally took the lead back at 17-16 on an ace by Bruegeman. Kamiah tied it at 18-18 but Prairie took the lead for good at 19-18 on a second touch kill be Lockett. An ace by Kaschmitter and a kill by Uhlenkott made it 21-18. After a sideout by each team, Klapprich served 2 aces to get to match point. After 2 points by Kamiah, Lockett scored a kill on a set from Uhlenkott to win the game and the match.
In the third game Kamiah jumped out to a 0-5 lead before Bruegeman scored a kill to avoid the shutout. After a kill by Kelly Stubbers, Kaschmitter served 5 straight aces for a 7-5 Prairie lead.
Kamiah came back to tie the game at 11 before Kaschmitter scored on a tip. Kamiah again tied the score at 13 but Stubbers scored consecutive kills to give Prairie the sweep.
The C team also won all 3 of their games, scores unavailable.
Vs. Troy
In a battle of undefeated teams, Prairie came out on the short end of a 16-25, 16-25, 20-25 sweep at the hands of Troy at Cottonwood Thursday, Sept. 20.
The JV went 1-2 vs. Troy by scores 17-25, 25-11, 0-15
The C team  won their match 2 games to 1, 22-25, 25-18, 15-13.
Border Battle
The Border Battle between 5 Idaho and 5 Washington schools has been held since 2010 and this year Washington won the matchup for the first time since 2010, 16 matches to 9. Pomeroy and Clarkston were both 5-0 for the winning state with St. John-Endicott/LaCrosse winning 4 of 5. Troy was 3-2 for Idaho with Prairie, Orofino and Genesee all going 2-3 and Kamiah 0-5 for Idaho.
Prairie won against Asotin and Dayton/Waitsburg while losing to Pomeroy, Clarkston and St. John-Endicott/LaCrosse.
Vs. St. John-Endicott/LaCrosse
Probably the most improved team at the tournament over last year was the St. John-Endicott/LaCrosse team. They had some tall athletic players they didn’t have last year as well as a new coach. It may be the addition of LaCrosse to the consortium.
Prairie has beaten them the past couple years and looked like they would do it again as they built a 15-8 lead in the opening game. Things went downhill from there as the Eagles scored a kill and then served 8 straight points and 16 of the final 19 of the game. They also had a 6 point service run to close out the game.
The second game started like the first one ended as Prairie fell behind 3-11. Prairie was able to rally late and get back within 2 at 21-23 but SJEL then won the final 2 points to take the match.
Vs. Pomeroy
Prairie lost the match to Pomeroy by scores of 12-25, 15-25.
They never led in the opening game but kept it close until a 5 point run broke open a 2-point game at 7-14 and then another big serving run put the game out of reach as the score went from 9-14 to 9-22.
Prairie led briefly in the second game with their last lead coming at 5-4. Pomeroy scored 9 of the next 10 points to take control.
Vs. Asotin
Theresa Wemhoff spikes the ball against Clarkston at the Border Battle as coach Julie Schumacher looks on.Against Asotin Prairie won their first match of the day 27-25, 25-8.
In their third match of the day Prairie started slow as they fell behind 2-5. Asotin has some strong hitters but they sometimes looked like a scramble drill on offense to get the ball to their hitters.
A missed serve sent Hiler to the service line for 3 straight aces and Wemhoff added a kill for a 7-5 Prairie lead.
Prairie managed to hold the lead the rest of the game.
Prairie broke it open on a 5-point service run by Shears that took the lead from 10-8 to 15-8. Higgins and Wemhoff each had 2 kills and Hiler added a kill in the run.
Asotin scored 2 points then bricked a serve. Krogh served 2 aces and Hiler added a kill for a 20-10 lead.
It looked good at that point but Asotin didn’t give up and came roaring back to within 2 at 23-21. Higgins scored a kill for a game point chance but Prairie missed the serve. Asotin scored 3 straight to get their own game point chance at 24-25.
Poxleitner won a joust at the net to tie the game and Higgins followed with 2 kills to give Prairie their first win of the day.
In the second game Asotin scored first but 3-point service runs by Higgins and Hiler gave Prairie an 8-2 lead. After trading sideouts, Landers served 5 straight for a 14-3 lead. She had 3 aces and McWilliams and Krogh each added a kill.
At 17-5, Shears had a 6-point run that took Prairie to a 23-5 lead. She had 1 ace with Hiler scoring 2 kills and Wemhoff, Higgins and Krogh adding 1 each.
Asotin wasn’t able to rally back this time and Higgins scored the sideout kill that won the match.
Vs. Clarkston
In their fourth match of the day Prairie lost to Clarkston 21-25, 10-25.
Prairie battled all the way through the opening game although they led only at the start 2-0 and 3-1. Clarkston then scored 5 straight points to take the lead.
Prairie was able to tie the score at 6, 7, 10, 11 and 19 but was never able to regain the lead.
The second game saw Clarkston steadily pull away throughout the game. The Bantams never had any big service runs just several 2 and 3 point runs and one 4 point run.
Vs. Dayton-Waitsburg
Prairie was able to gain another victory in their final match of the day as they beat Dayton-Waitsburg 25-16, 25-16.
Prairie took a 6-2 lead in the opening game as Hiler served an ace with Wemhoff adding 2 kills. Wemhoff then served from an 8-5 score to 12-5 with 1 ace, 2 kills by Higgins and a kill by Krogh.
D-W closed within 3 at 12-9 but 3 aces by Krogh helped extend the lead back to 8 at 18-10.
D-W twice closed within 6 but Prairie pushed back each time and won by 9.
In the second game Hiler stuffed a D-W spike to make it 5-2 and then went back to serve 2 aces with Wemhoff adding a kill for an 8-2 lead.
The lead held at 6-7 points until Krogh went to the service line for a 7-point run that pushed the lead to 21-6. She had 4 aces while she, Landers and Hiler each had a kill. Also D-W had a rare net foul on serve receive.
Prairie got the score to match point at 24-10 then had a hard time putting the game away.
D-W rallied for 6 straight points before a serve receive dig by Wemhoff sailed over the net and found the floor for the match winning kill.
For the day Higgins had 30 kills, 8 assists and 9 aces. Wemhoff also had 30 kills with 3 assists and 7 aces. Krogh had 16 kills, 51 assists and 13 aces. Hiler had 15 kills, including 3 blocks with 1 assist and 14 aces. Schwartz had 7 kills and 5 assists. Poxleitner had 6 kills and 2 assists. Landers had 4 kills, 20 assists and 6 aces. McWilliams had 3 kills and 2 assists. Shears had 2 kills, 1 assist and 3 aces. Delaney Lockett, brought up to the varsity for the tournament, had 1 kill, 5 assists and 3 aces.
