Lady Pirates win 3 matches
The Prairie Lady Pirates won 3 matches this past week, two of them on the road. They won a tough 5-set match at Potlatch Tuesday, Sept. 25 then won straight set matches at Grangeville, Thursday, Sept. 27 and at home against Kamiah on Monday, Oct. 1.
At Potlatch
A short-handed Prairie team traveled to Potlatch with starter Jordyn Higgins sitting out with a knee injury and starter Ashton Landers not making the trip. That may have a lot to do with the tough 5-set match against a team that they swept earlier in the season. Scores were 21-25, 25-13, 25-12, 23-25, 15-6.
In the opening game Prairie fell behind 3-6 but rallied to take an 8-6 lead as Hope Schwartz served 3 aces and Theresa Wemhoff added a kill.
Potlatch came right back and took back the lead, leading by as many as 3 at 11-14.Kristyna Krogh spikes the ball at Potlatch. Also shown from left are Hope Schwartz, Madison Shears and Alexis Hiler.
Prairie again took the lead with Kristyna Krogh serving 2 aces and Schwartz adding a kill to make it 15-14.
Potlatch again took a 3 point lead at 15-18 only to see Prairie come back with 2 kills by Alexis Hiler, an ace by Madison Shears and a tip by Wemhoff that made it 19-18. A hitting error cost Prairie the serve and Potlatch got 4 straight aces plus another Pirate hitting error to get to game-point at 19-24.
Prairie fought off 2 game-points before losing.
The second game Prairie controlled nearly the whole way. Potlatch scored first but a kill by Shears sent Krogh to the service line for 2 aces plus a back row kill by Sierra McWilliams for a 4-1 lead.
After a trade of sideouts, Shears served 3 aces and Wemhoff added a kill for a 9-2 lead.
Three times Potlatch got back within 4 points, the last time at 14-10. At that point Wemhoff scored a kill to give McWilliams the chance to serve. 5 straight aces plus a kill by Shears and Prairie had a 21-10 lead. That lead to an easy 25-13 win.
In the third game Potlatch led early but a 7-point service run by Shears turned the game around. She took over with the score at 2-3. She had 2 aces with Wemhoff adding 4 kills and Hiler a kill for a 9-3 lead. Prairie added a couple of points to the lead to take a 20-10 lead but Potlatch answered with a couple before missing a serve to make it 21-12. Hiler than served out the game with 4 straight aces.
The fourth game saw Potlatch turn things around and jump out to an early lead. Prairie managed to keep it close but could never quite take the lead. The closed within 1 late at 20-21 and again at 22-23 only to see Potlatch score a sideout each time.
At 22-24 Prairie scored a sideout to get within 1 again at 23-24 but then a hitting error gave Potlatch game point and tied the match at 2 games each.
Potlatch couldn’t keep their momentum going though as Krogh served Prairie to a quick 7-0 lead in the decisive fifth set. She had 4 aces while Shears had a pair of kills and Schwartz added 1.
Potlatch was able to get as close as 5 points at 11-6 before missing a serve. Schwartz then served out the match with Wemhoff scoring the match winning kill.

Krogh had 5 kills, 28 assists and 10 aces. She served on 16 of Prairie’s points. McWilliams had 3 kills and 6 aces. Ellea Poxleitner had 1 kill and 1 assist.
The JV team won their match 2 games to 1 by scores of 25-15, 26-24 and 10-15.
Prairie broke open a close first game when Brooklyn Riener served 7 straight points to turn a 10-7 lead into a 17-7 lead. She had 2 aces with Halle Klapprich scoring 3 kills and Kelly Stubbers  adding 1 as well.
Potlatch was able to get back within 7 at 20-13 but Riener scored a sideout kill and Ellea Uhlenkott served Prairie to game-point at 24-13 before missing a serve. She had 2 aces and Sydnee Bruegeman added a kill.

At 14-12, Potlatch scored a sideout and then scored 9 more points to take a 14-22 lead and looked like they were going to tie the match.
A missed serve finally ended their run and Josie Remacle served 4 straight aces to get Prairie back into it.
Potlatch then took a 20-24 lead before missing a serve and putting Riener on the service line. Riener served 2 aces then Trinity Martinez scored a kill to tie the game at 24-24.
Uhlenkott blocked a Potlatch spike to get Prairie to match point and Riener served an ace to win it.
Anna Kaschmitter served an ace to start game 3 then things turned the Loggers’ way with 5 straight points.
Potlatch never surrendered the lead to salvage the third game.
At Grangeville
Prairie won a non-league match at Grangeville in 3 games, 25-21, 25-16, 25-19.
It could have been more lopsided if not for Prairie’s struggles at the service line. 7 of Grangeville’s 21 points in the opening game came on missed serves by Prairie. They only had 1 missed serve in the second game and won big. In the third game 5 of Grangeville’s 19 points were on missed Prairie serves.

Grangeville never led again although they got within 1 at 15-14. A kill by Hiler ended that rally with Schwartz scoring a kill and Shears an ace for an 18-14 lead.
