Types of diabetes
Diabetes is typically generalized into one disease but it is really three.  There is type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, and gestational diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is also called insulin-dependent diabetes.  Type 1 is an autoimmune disease. The body attacks the pancreas with antibodies, so the pancreas no longer makes insulin. Type 2 diabetes is the most common type.  This is a non-insulin-dependent diabetes and is milder than type 1. People with type 2 usually produce some insulin but does not produce enough or the cells are resistant to the insulin.  The cells that resist the insulin are found in fat, liver, and muscles. Gestational diabetes is triggered by pregnancy. It is more similar to type 2 because their cells are insulin resistant.  This must be controlled in order to protect the baby. Unlike type 1 and 2, which are lifelong diseases, gestational diabetes usually resolves itself after pregnancy. Of course mother’s may develop type 2 diabetes over time.
