wins 2 of 3 at District
The Summit Lady Patriots closed out their regular season with a senior night loss to Kendrick, 16-25, 24-26, 25-22, 20-25 at Cottonwood Tuesday, Oct. 9 and then won 2 of 3 matches to stay alive at District. On senior night Kayla Rehder and Taylor Lustig were honored. All 3 District matches took place Saturday, Oct. 13 at the LCSC Activity Center. 
In the opening game against Timberline it was close until Erin Chmelik took her first turn at the service line. She took the serve at 8-6 and it was 18-6 before Timberline finally scored a sideout. She had 2 aces while Taylor Lustig had 5 kills and Kayla Rehder added 3. Timberline answered back with 7 straight points to close back withing 5 at 18-13 before missing a serve. Dani Sonnen served an ace but then came up short on her next serve. After 4 straight sideouts, Chmelik scored a kill and Lexi Currier then served an ace and Jade Prigge scored a kill to give Summit the game. The second game saw several lead changes until Lustig took over at the service line with the score at 11-11. She served 7 aces and Currier added a kills as Summit took a 19-11 lead. After 4 straight sideouts, Rehder served up 2 aces for a 23-13 lead. Timberline scored a pair of points then Prigge scored a kill for the sideout and Lustig scored a kill for the win. In the third game Lustig served Summit to a 6-1 lead with 3 aces and a kill each by Prigge and Chmelik. Timberline never got any closer than 3 points the rest of the way. Summit didn’t have any big service runs, they just adding 2 or 3 points on serve while siding out most of Timberline’s serves. For the match Lustig had 12 kills, 1 assist and 10 aces. Currier had 7 kills, 27 assists and 4 aces. Rehder had 7 kills and 4 aces. Chmelik had 5 kills, 3 assists and 2 aces. Prigge had 5 kills and 1 ace. Sonnen had 2 aces and Erin Wassmuth had 1 kill. Summit trailed early in the first game but rallied to take the lead 8-7, on a kill each by Lustig and Currier with Chmelik serving. Nezperce reclaimed the lead with Summit tying the score at 9 and again at 10. A kill by Lustig and an ace by Rehder gave Summit at 12-10 lead. Nezperce tied it at 12-12 and a kill by Currier gave Summit a 13-12 lead. That was it for the Patriots as Nezperce scored the sideout to tie it and Caitlyn Cronce then served 7 straight points for the Indians for a 13-20 lead. Summit rallied back within 3 at 18-21 on 2 aces by Prigge and a kill by Rehder but Nezperce then scored the sideout and outscored Summit 1-4 to win the game. Summit led only once in the second game at 7-5 after 2 aces by Rehder and a kill by Prigge. Nezperce answered with 6 straight points for a 7-11 lead. Nezperce stretched the lead to 9 at 10-19 but Summit rallied back within 3 after a 5 point run by Lustig. She had 3 aces and Rehder and Wassmuth each added a kill to close within 16-19. Nezperce scored the sideout and pushed the lead back to 6 and held off the Patriots from there. In the third game Summit took a 4-2 lead after 2 aces by Currier but Nezperce answered with 5 straight points. Summit managed to pull back into a tie at 11-11 but could never retake the lead. After the tie, Nezperce responded with 7 of the next 8 points for a 12-18 lead. Summit managed to get back within 3 at 16-19 but that was it for the Patriots who dropped into the loser’s bracket. For the match Lustig had 9 kills and 3 aces. Chmelik had 6 kills and 3 assists. Rehder had 6 kills, including 3 blocks, plus 1 assist and 4 aces. Currier had 5 kills, 18 assists and 4 aces. Prigge had 3 kills and 2 aces. Wassmuth had 1 kill and Sonnen had 2 assists.  It
did not start well for the Patriots as they fell behind 1-9 in the opening
game.
Down 3-11 they started their comeback with a kill by Rehder who then served 3 straight aces. Chmelik and Prigge each added a kill as Summit closed the gap to 9-11. A service dig kill by Sonnen made it 10-13 and sent Chmelik to the service line. She had 2 aces and Lustig added a kill to tie the game at 13-13. Summit again fell behind 14-19 but rallied back to tie it again at 20-20. After a pair of sideouts Summit took their first lead since it was 1-0 when Currier served 3 straight aces to make it 24-21. Deary answered with 4 straight points to take their own shot at game point at 24-25. A dig by Chmelik scored a kill to tie it and a dig by Currier gave Summit another game point chance which Rehder converted by serving an ace. The second game started close and stayed that way. Summit took their biggest lead at 13-8 after 5 service points by Prigge, 2 of which were aces with Currier adding 2 kills and Lustig another. Deary came right back to tie it again at 13-13 and eventually took their biggest lead of the game at 16-19. Chmelik scored a kill and then served an ace. Prigge scored a kill and then a block for a 20-19 lead that Summit never surrendered as they went on to win by 3. Deary wound up dominating the third game as Summit never led and wound up losing by 11. The Patriots shrugged off that loss and jumped out to a 6-0 lead as Lustig served 5 aces and Rehder added a kill to open the fourth game. A 5 point service run by Rehder pushed the lead to 16-3. She had 3 aces and Prigge added 2 kills. Deary tried to rally back but never got closer than 8 points as Summit held on to win and advance in the tournament. With the win Summit was to play Nezperce on Tuesday and if they won that match they would play Kendrick, also on Tuesday. Two wins on Tuesday would put them up against Logos on Wednesday at 7:30 for the District title. For the match Currier had 13 kills, 22 assists and 9 aces. Prigge had 11 kills, including 3 blocks, plus 1 assist and 3 aces. Lustig had 9 kills, 4 assists and 7 aces. Chmelik had 7 kills, 2 assists and 5 aces. Rehder had 6 kills and 8 aces. Sonnen had 1 kill and 1 assist. Wassmuth had 3 assists. Summit is now 5-10 on the season.

On Tuesday, Oct. 16 they lost to Nezperce 1 game to 3 to end their season. Details on that match next week. |
