Boys and girls teams both qualify for State
For the first time ever both the girls and boys Prairie cross country teams have qualified for State during the Regional Meet at Lewiston Thursday, Oct. 18.
The girls team finished second at District and the boys finished third. The top 3 teams for each gender qualified for State.
The girls team was led by Ciara Chaffee, who finished 4th in 21:20.
Kyleigh Duclos, who finished 13th, would also have qualified for state as an individual with a time of 23:13.20.
Kendra Duclos was right behind Kyleigh in 14th in 23:13.60 as the two raced each other to the finish line. It’s fortunate the team qualified because Kendra finished one spot shy of qualifying as an individual as the top 1/3 of varsity runners entered advance to state.
Jessie Sonnen was 19th in 23:44.30, just ahead of Maria Schmidt, who was 20th in 24:06.30.
Hope McIntire finished 22nd in 24:17.60 and Mattie Lustig finished 36th in 26:34.60.
A cross country team is 5 to 7 runners so all 7 girls that ran at Regionals will make up the state team.
Tanner Hibbard was the top finisher for the boys team with an 8th place finish at 18:09.50. James Villamor finished 17th in 18:51.40. Both were among the state qualifiers as individuals as the top 19 finishers qualified.
Devin Ross finished 24th in 19:20.90. Tyler Wemhoff was 38th in 20:42.50 with William Hooper in 39th in 20:47.90. Justin Lockett was 50th in 21:40.0 and Alex McElroy was 64th in 24:04.80. Ryan Arnzen was 69th in 26:41.50.
Hibbard, Villamor, Ross, Wemhoff, Hooper, Lockett and Arnzen will make up the boys team at State with McElroy as an alternate in case one of the others is unable to compete.
As a team the girls score was 59, 13 ahead of Deary and 21 behind first place Troy.
As a team the boys score was 85, 12 behind second place Kamiah. They edged fourth place Troy by just 6 points.
It is the first time the boys team qualified out of District for State since 1992. That team however didn’t get to compete at State because District officials mistakenly used a Nezperce runner to count for the team’s qualification. There are no such problems this time as all the runners attend Prairie.
The State meet is set for Saturday, Oct. 27 at the same course as the Regional Meet in Lewiston. The girls race will be at 10:30 a.m. and the boys race will be at 12:15 p.m.

Ciara Chaffee is among the leaders as she makes a turn to loop back on the course. She wound up 4th overall.

Kyleigh Duclos leads her sister Kendra as they near the finish of the girls race at Regionals. Kyleigh finished in 13th while Kendra was 14th.

James Villamor nears the finish line in 17th place, which would have been good enough to qualify him for state even if the team hadn't qualified.
