In remembrance of Veterans Day and the end of World War One, reproductions of the 1918 W.L. Haskell poster entitled “The Same Spirit” are still available at Grangeville Bicentennial Museum (305 N. College) and at Idaho County Veterans Outreach & Community Center (318 E. Main Street). Posters are $10, including tax. Poster proceeds offset costs to acquire and publicly display numerous artifacts associated with Idaho County’s contributions in the Great War. “These artifacts humanize difficult times a century ago,” said Idaho County Historical Society (ICHS) President Floyd Whitley. “Preservation is important, ‘Lest we forget.’” Over several years, “ICHS produced public programs on our county’s involvement in World War One,” said Whitley. “In February this year, ICHS publicly presented an emotionally riveting commemoration program, February 5th at Grangeville High School on the ordeal of Idaho County foresters aboard the ill-fated S.S. Tuscania.” “Bicentennial Museum displays include many Idaho County Doughboy items,” Whitley added. “In 2011 Grangeville acquired by a generous gift a set of letters written from France—we call them the Mack Gregg Letters.” The letters were sent to Greggs’ high school sweetheart, Annie Norwood. “ICHS volunteers transcribed these letters, and presented them in a public program, Whitley noted. “They provide insight into a Grangeville soldier during the War,” said Whitley. The public is invited to visit Grangeville Bicentennial Museum’s significant collection of World War artifacts and to support ICHS activities to preserve our local heritage. “Obviously, artifact displays come at a cost—in volunteer hours but also in direct expenses to acquire them,” Whitley noted. W.L. Haskell poster sales provide funds to care for valuable historical resources. “And they are resources,” Whitley added. “We should cherish and keep these, considering how a high cost was ultimately paid by the sacrifices of Idaho County forebears in defense of freedom.” The public is invited to help ICHS continue its mission with the purchase of the Haskell reproduction. ICHS is funded entirely by citizen volunteers. Annual dues (only $5) help provide nominal funds to present popular public programs like Brown Bag Lunch Historical Series each summer. |
