Pirates improve to 7-0
The Prairie Lady Pirates improved to 7-0 with 3 wins this past week. On Tuesday, Dec. 4 they won a league game 84-21 at Kamiah. On Friday, Dec. 7 they beat Grangeville 62-49 at Grangeville during the Idaho County Shootout. Finally on Saturday they picked up another league win 63-25 over Troy at Cottonwood. Prairie jumped out to a 22-5 lead after one quarter then posted 36 points in the second as they took a 58-15 lead at the half. They outscored Kamiah 14-6 in the third quarter and 12-0 in a running clock fourth quarter. Also scoring for Prairie were Alexis Hiler with 7, Madison Shears with 3 and Sydnee Bruegeman, who scored her first varsity points, with 2. Prairie also won the JV game 48-17. Peery kept Prairie in the game as she tied the score with a 3-pointer after Grangeville had taken a 0-3 lead. She tied it again at 5 and Shears tied the game for a third time at 7-7. Grangeville then closed out the first quarter with a 0-7 run for a 7-14 lead. Peery opened the second quarter with her second 3-pointer of the game and after a Grangeville basket, Prairie put together a 6-0 run to tie the game. Krogh scored a lay-up and Higgins added 2 more baskets. Grangeville scored again but Prairie answered with 4 straight to take their first lead of the game. Wemhoff scored a free throw then Peery stole the ball and took it to the basket for a 19-18 lead. Wemhoff added another free throw to make it 20-18. Grangeville tied it then Prairie had a 4-0 run followed by a 0-4 run by Grangeville that left the score tied at 24-24 at the half. Prairie would’ve had a solid lead if they could’ve converted free throws as they were just 4 for 16 in the half at the line. Grangeville took back the lead with a free throw to open the third quarter but Peery answered with a driving lay-up to put Prairie back on top. Grangeville freshman Camden Barger hit a 3 to put Grangeville back on top again but then missed her final 6 shot attempts. A steal by Peery led to the tying basket and Peery put Prairie on top for good with a basket off of an inbounds feed from Higgins. A steal by Wemhoff led to 2 free throws for a 4-point lead at 32-28. Grangevile scored but Prairie then scored 5 straight to make it 37-30. Wemhoff had a basket, Peery a free throw then Wemhoff added 2 more free throws. A Grangeville free throw was answered by a 3 from Shears but Grangeville then scored to the final basket of the quarter to make it 40-33. Prairie extended the lead with a 10-0 run to open the fourth quarter. Peery scored a free throw, Chaffee a lay-up, Wemhoff a free throw and then Higgins sank a couple of 3-pointers to put Prairie up 17. The second 3-pointer came after Prairie’s full court pressure forced a 10-second turnover. A 4-9 run by Grangeville closed the margin to 54-43. Wemhoff then scored 2 free throws. Grangeville answered by hitting 2 of 4 at the line before Krogh scored on a putback. A Grangeville basket cut the lead again to 11 but Prairie connected on 4 of 6 at the line to push the lead back to 15 at 62-47. Higgins and Ellea Uhlenkott each scored 1 and Peery scored 2. Grangeville scored the final basket to make it a 13-point margin of victory. Peery wound up with 20 points to lead the scoring with Wemhoff adding 13 and Higgins 12. Shears scored 6 while Krogh and Chaffee added 4 each. Hiler scored 2 and Uhlenkott 1. The bigger Grangeville squad held a 35-52 rebounding margin with Peery pulling down 10 for a double-double. Higgins, Wemhoff and Krogh each added 6 rebounds. Peery almost had a triple-double as she had 8 steals. Wemhoff added 5 steals while Shears had 3 assists. Prairie was 20 for 43 from the field, 47%, and 17 for 37 at the line, 46%. They hit 13 of 21 in the second half at the line, 62%. Grangeville was 17 for 62 from the field, 27%, and 13 of 23 at the line, 57%. 2 nights earlier the Prairie JV team suffered their first loss of the season, 28-43 to Grangeville at Cottonwood. Prairie had runs of 7, 11 and 10 points in the first quarter while Troy was just 3 for 10 and had 12 turnovers. Higgins got off to a hot start with 12 first quarter points as she was 5 for 6 from the field, including a 3, and 1 for 1 at the line. Peery and Krogh each had a 3 and scored  5
points in the quarter. Shears scored 4 and Uhlenkott had the other 2 points.
Prairie scored the first 4 points of the second quarter to complete a 14-0 run as Higgins and Wemhoff each scored 2. Troy had another 11 turnovers in the second quarter as Prairie built their lead to 44-14 by the half. Higgins and Hiler had 4 each in the quarter while Shears, Wemhoff, Peery and Uhlenkott had 2 each. Prairie scored the first 8 points of the third quarter to build the lead to 52-14 with Higgins scoring 6 and Hiler 2. At that point Higgins went to the bench having outscored Troy 22-14. Troy finally caught up to Higgins by the end of the third quarter as Prairie took a 58-22 lead into the fourth. Peery had all 6 of Prairie’s points in the final 4 minutes of the quarter. The fourth quarter was played under a running clock and Prairie outscored Troy 5-3. Uhlenkott and Krogh each had a basket and Wemhoff added a free throw Higgins wound up with 22 points to lead the team with Peery adding 13. Krogh scored 7 with Hiler, Shears and Uhlenkott adding 6 each. And Wemhoff 3. Uhlenkott was 3 for 3 from the field in the game. Prairie edged Troy on the boards 23-21 with Higgins, Chaffee and Uhlenkott pulling down 4 each. Peery had 6 steals and 5 assists to lead the team in both categories. Hiler and Higgins each had 4 steals while Uhlenkott had 3. Higgins and Chaffee each had 3 assists. Prairie was 26 for 45 from the field, 58%, and 8 for 11 at the line, 73%. Troy was 11 for 39 from the field, 38%, and 3 for 4 at the line, 75%. Prairie is now 7-0 on the season and 5-0 in league play. The JV team bounced back for their first loss with a 44-12 win. Prairie started slow as they led just 9-7 at the end of the first quarter with Trinity Martinez scoring 4, Molly Johnson 3 and Ali Rehder 2 in the quarter. Things changed in the second quarter as Prairie the first 9 points and held Troy scoreless until the final minute where they scored their only 2 of the quarter. Prairie led 18-9 at the half. Hope Schwartz scored the first 5 points of the quarter with Laney Forsmann and Martinez adding 2 each and Johnson 1. Prairie held Troy scoreless for the entire third quarter as they scored 16 to take a commanding 34-9 lead. Johnson and Rehder each scored 5 in the quarter with Martinez, Forsmann and Josie Remacle adding 2 each. In the fourth quarter it was a basket by Johnson with 5:03 left that gave Prairie a 40-10 lead and invoked the running clock. Johnson wound up leading the scoring with 11 points with Martinez scoring 8. Rehder and Schwartz added 7 each with Forsmann scoring 5 , Remacle 4 and Olivia Klapprich 2. Delaney Lockett suffered an ankle injury in the loss to Grangeville and Wednesday. She tried to play with the ankle wrapped but it was obviously she was still in pain. The JV’s dominated the boards 35-19 with Remacle leading the team with 8. Johnson added 6 and Martinez 5. Johnson had 8 steals and 4 assists to lead the team in both categories. The JV’s were 18 for 45 from the field, 40%, and 8 for 20 at the line, 40%. Troy was 4 for 25 at the line, 16%, and 3 for 6 at the line, 50%.
