Lady Pirates beat Lapwai
The Prairie Lady Pirates held an 18 point lead early in the third quarter and held off a rally to beat Lapwai 58-48 at Cottonwood Tuesday, Dec. 11.
Prairie scored first in the game when Jordyn Higgins sank a 3 from the top of the key.Jordyn Higgins handles the ball against Lapwai. She had a big game, scoring 24 points, and several times drove right through the defense to the hoop for lay-ups.
Lapwai came back to tie it at 3 and then took their only lead of the game at 4-5 with 4:12 left in the first quarter.
A full court drive for a lay-up by Higgins put Prairie back on top 12 seconds later and India Peery added a 3-point play to make it 9-5. Madison Shears sank a 3-pointer to make it 12-5 as Prairie scored 8 points in less than a minute.
Lapwai got back within 3 at 12-9 but Ciara Chaffee scored a pair of free throws to put Prairie back up by 5. 
After a Lapwai free throw, Higgins drove right through the Lapwai defense for a lay-up and Shears added a free throw for a 17-10 lead.
After another Lapwai free throw, Higgins again drove right through the defenders for another lay-up to make it 19-11 after one quarter.
Chaffee scored inside to open the second quarter.
Lapwai answered with a 3 but Prairie came right back with a 9-0 run for a 16 point lead at 30-14. Shears scored 2 free throws and Peery scored the other 7 on a 3-pointer, a bank shot off an inbounds feed from Alexis Hiler and a jumper from the elbow.
Lapwai scored another 3 but Chaffee answered with a corner 3. Another Lapwai 3 was answered by 2 free throws by Kristyna Krogh and a free throw by Shears for a 36-20 lead.
Lapwai finished the half with a 3 to make it 36-23 at the break. 
Lapwai ahd scored 4 baskets in the second quarter, all 3-pointers. Prairie meanwhile was 5 for 6 from the field in the quarter and 5 for 6 at the line. Prairie was 2 for 3 on 3-point tries.
Higgins scored another driving lay-up to open the second half and Peery followed with a basket for a 40-23 lead. After a Lapwai basket, Higgins connected for 3 to make it 43-25, Prairie’s biggest lead of the game.
After a Lapwai timeout, the Wildcats got more intense on defense and forced some Prairie turnovers which led to a 0-10 run that cut the Pirates lead to 8 at 43-35. A short baseline shot by Higgins broker the run but Lapwai added another basket to pull back within 8 at the end of the third quarter, 45-37.
Lapwai scored to open the fourth quarter to cut Prairie’s lead down to 6.
Coach Lori Mader called a timeout to settle her team down and they responded. Theresa Wemhoff scored on a drive to the hoop and Prairie then scored 7 consecutive points at the free throw line. Higgins hit 5 of 6 at the line and Shears added 2 as Prairie completed a 9-0 run to push the lead back to 15 at 54-39 with 4:08 to play.
Lapwai scored 4 to get back within 11, and after a free throw by Wemhoff, got back within 10 with a basket with 2:03 left. 
A free throw by Peery and 2 free throws by Higgins put Prairie back on top by 13 at 58-45 with 1:18 left. 
Lapwai sank a 30+ foot 3-pointer at the buzzer to cut the final margin to 10 points.
Out of Prairie’s 13 points in the fourth quarter, the final 11 came at the free throw line as Prairie went 11 for 18 in the quarter.
Higgins had 24 points to lead the Pirates in scoring with Peery adding 13, Shears 9, Chaffee 7, Wemhoff 3 and Krogh 2.
Prairie had a slim 34-33 edge on the boards with Chaffee pulling down 9 to lead the Pirates. Peery added 8 and Higgins had 7.
Peery had 3 steals and 3 assists.
Turnovers were close to a wash as Prairie had 20 and Lapwai had 17.
Prairie was 16 for 35 from the field, 46%, and 21 for 31 at the line, 68%. Lapwai was 17 for 55 from the field, 31%, and 8 for 16 at the line, 50%.
Prairie is now 8-0 on the season and 6-0 in league play.
Lapwai won the JV game 29-48.
Prairie scored the first point of the game on a technical free throw by Hope Schwartz as Lapwai apparently had a book error, either a wrong number or someone playing who wasn’t in the official scorebook.
Lapwai then outscored Prairie 2-10 for a 3-10 lead. 
Prairie got back within 2 at 10-12 on a baskets by Trinity Martinez, a 3 by Schwartz and a steal and ensuing lay-up by Delanie Lockett.
A 3 by Lapwai and a lay-up by Josie Remacle made it 12-15 at the quarter break.
Baskets by Molly Johnson and Remacle gave Prairie the lead again at 16-15 in the second quarter. Another Lapwai 3 put the Wildcats back on top but Prairie tied it on 2 free throws by Johnson.
Lapwai then scored 11 straight points before a basket at the end of the half by Sydnee Bruegeman made it 20-29 at the break.
Lapwai built their lead to as many as 16 points in the third quarter at 21-37. Prairie scored the final 3 points of the quarter at the line to make it 24-37. A basket by Bruegeman and a 3 by Ali Rehder got Prairie back within 8 at 29-37 but Lapwai then scored the final 11 points of the game.
Remacle led the JV’s in scoring with 6 points with Schwartz, Bruegeman and Johnson adding 4 each. Martinez, Laney Forsmann and Rehder each scored 3 and Lockett scored 2.
Prairie had a 52-45 edge on the boards with Lockett and Johnson pulling down 11 each and Forsmann adding 10.
Forsmann, Lockett and Johnson each had 2 steals and Lockett had 5 assists.
Prairie was 10 for 50 from the field, 20%, and 7 for 23 at the line, 30%. Lapwai was 19 for 64 from the field, 30%, and 4 for 8 at the line, 50%.
