Lady Pirates win two close games
The Prairie Lady Pirates finished off the 2018 portion of their season with their two closest games so far, both against teams with Bulldogs as mascots. On Tuesday, Dec. 18 they scored the final 8 points of the game to beat Genesee 51-45 and on Friday, Dec. 21, they pulled out a 1 point win, 35-34 over Grangeville. Both games were played at Cottonwood.
Vs. Genesee
The Prairie Lady Pirates had a tougher than expected matchup against Genesee on Tuesday, a team they beat by 38 a couple weeks ago.
It started out like it was going to be another easy win as Prairie scored the first 9 points of the game. India Peery and Jordyn Higgins each hit a 3 while Ciara Chaffee scored a lay-up and Peery added a free throw.Ellea Uhlenkott scores a lay-up against Genesee.
After a Genesee basket, Higgins was fouled on a lay-up and converted a 3-point play for a 12-2 lead.
Over the next 3 minutes Genesee outscored Prairie 2-10 to pull within 2 points at 14-12.
Prairie pushed the lead back to 7 by the end of the quarter with a basket each by Higgins and Kristyna Krogh and a free throw by Madison Shears.
Genesee opened the second quarter with a basket then Prairie scored 6 straight for their biggest lead of the game at 25-14. Peery, Higgins and Ellea Uhlenkott each scored a basket.
That was at the 5:28 mark of the second quarter. From that point on Genesee dominated, scoring 7 straight points to pull within 4 and outscoring Prairie 4-13 the rest of the half. Prairie’s only points came on a basket by Shears with 1:33 left and 2 free throws by Shears with 15 seconds left.
An ill-advised foul with 3 seconds left sent Genesee’s Emerson Parkins to the line for 2 free throws that made it 29-27 at the half.
Genesee tied it with a basket 14 seconds into the second half but Prairie answered with a basket by Shears.
Genesee then scored 7 straight points to take their first lead of the game at 31-36.
Prairie closed out the third quarter with 2 lay-ups by Alexis Hiler and a basket off an inbounds play by Peery to retake the lead at 37-36.
A lot of the breaks seemed to go Genesee’s way in the game but one that didn’t came right at the end of the third quarter when Genesee’s Kelsey Jensen was fouled on a 3-point attempt. She missed all 3 allowing Prairie to take the lead into the fourth quarter.
Genesee opened the fourth quarter with 2 baskets to retake the lead at 37-40. Prairie answered with a 3 each by Peery and Krogh to go up 43-40 with 5:01 left.
Genesee sharpshooter Bailey Leseman, who led the Bulldogs with 18 points, scored a basket and a 3-pointer to give Genesee a 43-45 lead with 2:50 to play.
Coach Lori Mader called a timeout and apparently urged her team to amp up the defense.
A Genesee turnover led to a 3-pointer by Higgins that put Prairie back on top with 2:00 left. 
Peery sank the front end of a 1 and 1 for a 47-45 lead.
Higgins then blocked a shot which Hiler grabbed and that led to 16 foot shot from the left side by Krogh that had many Prairie fans wondering about the shot selection until it went in as Prairie had no rebounders close to the rim.
Up by 4 with a minute to play, Prairie was able to force a couple of turnovers when Genesee got the ball. A steal by Higgins led to a missed free throw but Prairie got the ball back on a turnover with 13 seconds left that led to a pair of free throws by Hiler with 3 seconds left that sealed the win.
Higgins scored 15 to lead the Pirates with Peery adding 12 points. Shears and Krogh scored 7 each while Hiler scored 6 and Chaffee and Uhlenkott had 2 each.
Peery had 12 rebounds for a double-double although 44-45 edge on the boards. Krogh had 8 rebounds.
Shears and Higgins each had 7 steals. Peery had 4 assists and Theresa Wemhoff had 3 despite battling foul trouble.
Prairie was 19 for 64 from the field, 30%, probably their worst outing so far this season. They were 8 for 19 at the line, 42%. Genesee was 17 for 52 from the field, 33%, and 7 for 15 at the line, 47%. 
Prairie also won the JV game, which unlike the varsity game, followed the script of the game at Genesee. At Genesee Prairie had a 1 point lead at half and won by 33. This time it was tied at the half and Prairie won by 32, 51-19.
Genesee scored first in the game the Prairie scored 9 straight. Delaney Lockett scored 3 and Molly Johnson, Hope Schwartz and Trinity Martinez scored 2 each. Genesee cut the lead to 9-6 by the end of the quarter.
Prairie was held to just 6 points in the second quarter as Josie Remacle, Olivia Klapprich and Sydnee Bruegeman each scored a basket. Meanwhile Genesee scored 9, including the final 3 to tie the game at the half, 15-15.
Each team made 7 baskets and 1 free throw in the first half.
The second half it was like Prairie flipped a switch. Lockett scored 8 of Prairie’s first 10 points in the third quarter including a pair of 3-pointers as Prairie took a 25-15 lead.
Genesee finally scored at the 2:33 mark and after a basket by Bruegeman, scored again with 2:01 left. Those 2 baskets turned out to be Genesee’s only points in the second half.
Laney Forsmann, Ali Rehder and Schwartz each scored a basket to close out the third quarter with Prairie up 33-19 after outscoring Genesee 18-4 in the quarter.
It was 18-0 in the fourth quarter as Prairie scored the game’s final 24 points.
Remacle scored 7 in the quarter with Rehder scoring 4, Lockett 3 and Johnson and Klapprich 2 each. 
Genesee was 0-8 in the final quarter and 2 for 20 in the second half and had 20 of their 33 turnovers.
Lockett led Prairie with 14 points with Remacle scoring 9. Rehder had 6 with Johnson, Schwartz, Martinez, Bruegeman and Klapprich adding 4 each and Forsmann 2 as everybody scored.
Lockett also led in rebounds with 11 while Forsmann had 9 as Prairie had a 39-32 edge on the boards, 22-9 in the second half.
Remacle and Forsmann had 5 steals each while Bruegeman had 6 assists and Lockett had 5.
The JV’s were 22 for 46 from the field, 48%, and 5 for 10 at the line, 50%. Genesee was 9 for 49 from the field, 18%, and 1 for 4 at the line, 25%.

Vs. Grangeville
The game Friday against Grangeville was played close all the way through as neither team led by more than 6 points.
Grangeville scored first but Higgins tied it with a lay-up. Wemhoff gave Prairie their first lead with a free throw but it didn’t last long. 
Grangeville scored the next 6 points to take their biggest lead of the game at 3-8.

A steal by Higgins led to a lay-up by Wemhoff and a steal by Wemhoff led to a free throw by Krogh to make it 10-8.
Grangeville’s Paige Lindsley opened the second quarter with a 3-pointer for another lead change. Hiler answered with 2 free throws to put Prairie back on top.
Lindsley sank another 3 to put Grangeville back on top 14-16 but 2 free throws by Peery tied it and a driving lay-up by Hiler put Prairie back on top 16-14.
A basket by Lindsley tied it but Prairie answered with a free throw each by Chaffee and Wemhoff to make it 18-16. 
Wemhoff then stole the ball and drove to the hoop for a lay-up to make it 20-16 but Lindsley answered with a basket to make it a 2-point game at the half, 20-18.
A putback by Grangeville tied it in the third quarter but Higgins put Prairie back on top with 2 free throws. Grangeville tied it again then Prairie scored 6 straight to take their biggest lead of the game.
Chaffee scored a lay-up in transition on  nice feed from Peery. A defensive rebound by Wemhoff led to a runout by Higgins for a lay-up. Wemhoff then looped the ball up and over a defender and off the glass and in to make it 28-22.
A Grangeville got back within 3 on a 3-pointer by freshman Camden Barger. 
The Bulldogs took the lead again in the fourth quarter on 3 free throws. Prairie was held scoreless for over 3:30 of the quarter before Higgins drove into the lane and banked in a 10 footer to put Prairie back on top 30-29.
The next time down the floor Prairie missed a pair of shots before Chaffee grabbed an offensive rebound and kicked the ball out to Peery for a wide open 3 to make it 33-29 with 3:27 left.
Barger answered with a 3 to cut the lead to 1 and then put Grangeville on top 33-34 with 1:55 left.
Chaffee was fouled on the other end and sank both free throws with 1:37 left to put Prairie back into the lead.
With 34 seconds left Chaffee blocked a shot by Lindsley and Peery grabbed the rebound. Prairie gave it back 15 seconds later on a traveling call. 
Grangeville had several chances to win it. Lindsley missed a 3 but Grangeville post JaKaili Norman rebounded but missed a lay-up and Wemhoff rebounded with 3 seconds left and was fouled. 
Prairie got the ball down to their end where they turned it over but Lindsley’s 60 foot try came up short at the buzzer.
Wemhoff wound up leading the Pirates in scoring with 10 points as Grangeville made a concerted effort to keep Higgins and Peery from having any open looks. Higgins still wound up with 8 points, 6 of them in the second half. 
Peery and Chaffee each scored 5 with Hiler scoring 4, Shears 2 and Krogh 1.
Grangeville had a 24-37 rebounding advantage with Chaffee leading the Pirates with 7. 
Higgins had 5 steals while Peery had 3. Higgins, Shears, Peery and Chaffee each had 1 assist.
Prairie was 10 for 33 from the field, 30%, and 14 for 18 at the line, 78%. Free throw shooting had a lot to do with their win as Grangeville attempted just 4 free throws, making 2 for 50%. The Bulldogs were 14 for 52 from the field, 27%.
Prairie is now 10-0 on the season and 7-0 in league play. They don’t play again until Jan. 5 when they host the Lewiston JV.
The JV squad avenged one of their 2 losses with a 54-30 win.
Prairie led just  8-5 after the first quarter but outscored the Bulldogs 21-12 in the second quarter for a 29-17 halftime lead.
Lockett and Ellea Uhlenkott each scored 3 in the opening quarter and Lockett added 7 and Johnson 6 in the second quarter.
The second quarter was foul-filled as Prairie was 9 for 11 from the line in the quarter while Grangeville was 3 for 9 and missed 2 front ends of 1 and 1’s.
Prairie attempted another 12 free throws in the third quarter, hitting 5. They outscored Grangeville 14-8 in the quarter to take a 43-25 lead into the fourth. Lockett and Rehder each scored 4 in the quarter with Rehder hitting a 3-pointer. Schwartz and Forsmann added 2 each.
Prairie scored the first 9 points of the fourth quarter to take a 27 point lead. 2 free throws by Remacle, a basket and 2 free throws by Klapprich and a 3-pointer by Martinez accounted for the 9 points.
Grangeville connected on a 3 with 2:20 left and followed with a basket to cut the lead to 52-30 but Forsmann ended the scoring with a basket to make it 54-30.
Lockett scored 14 to lead the JV’s with Johnson, Bruegeman, Forsmann and Rehder scoring 6 points each. Uhlenkott and Klapprich scored 4 each. Martinez and Remacle scored 3 each and Schwartz scored 2.
Prairie dominated the boards 41-20. Uhlenkott led with 7 while Johnson, Remacle and Forsmann had 6 each.
Lockett nearly pulled off a double-double as she had 9 steals. Schwartz, Johnson and Forsmann each had 3 assists.
Prairie was 16 for 37 from the field, 43%, and 20 for 35 at the line, 57%. Grangeville was 10 for 37 from the field, 27%, and 7 for 19 at the line, 37%.
