Pirates win twice
The Prairie Lady Pirates opened 2019 with a pair of home wins against JV teams from much larger schools. On Saturday, Jan. 5, they beat the Lewiston JV 49-36 while on Monday, Jan. 7 they routed the Clarkston JV 59-28. 
Prairie started like they were headed to another big win as they forced 13 first quarter turnovers and jumped out to an 11-2 lead after Lewiston had scored the game’s first 2 points. Lewiston then turned things around and put together a 0-12 run to end the first quarter with an 11-14 lead. That’s a huge turnaround from the 29-5 first quarter lead Prairie had in November. Prairie took back the lead early in the second quarter. Alexis Hiler scored on a putback and Jordyn Higgins scored a 3-point play after making a steal for a 16-14 lead. Lewiston came back to tie it at 19-19 with 3:52 left in the half. Prairie then scored 6 straight points, 4 by Higgins and the other 2 on a lay-up by Ciara Chaffee that followed another steal by Higgins. A 3-pointer by Lewiston late in the half made it 25-22 at the break. In the third quarter the Bengals came out strong and outscored Prairie 3-8 to retake the lead at 28-31. Prairie’s 3 points came on a banked in 3-pointer by Hiler. A free throw and a basket by Chaffee tied it at 31 and kicked off a 12-0 run to end the third quarter. Prairie got a free throw from Madison Shears and 2 baskets each by India Peery and Theresa Wemhoff. For Peery those were her first points of the game as Lewiston had what looked like their best defender hounding Peery to that point, not giving her any good looks at the hoop. Peery’s two baskets came when she came off a screen on an inbounds play and after a steal. Lewiston scored the first 4 points of the fourth quarter to pull within 5 at 40-35 then Prairie scored 9 straight to put the game away. Chaffee scored 5 of those points, which included Prairie’s only made 3 pointer of the game, and Higgins scored the other 4. For Higgins her lay-up at the 6:36 mark on a feed from Chaffee, broke a 0 for 11 shooting slump. All 11 of those shots were ones she makes for often than not, they just wouldn’t go through the hoop. Lewiston broke the scoring run with a free throw at the 3:58 mark but that wound up being the final point of the game as Prairie looked to run clock. Higgins wound up with 17 points to lead Prairie with Chaffee scoring 10. Hiler scored 9, Wemhoff 8, Peery 4 and Shears 1. Lewiston dominated the boards 32-47 with Wemhoff leading Prairie with 9 rebounds while Hiler added 7. Wemhoff, Peery and Higgins each had 5 steals in the game while Shears and Kristyna Krogh had 4 each as Prairie forced 36 turnovers. Higgins had 7 assists. For the game Prairie was 20 for 59 from the field, 34%, and 7 for 14 at the line, 50%. Lewiston was 14 for 46 from the field, 30%, and 5 for 10 at the line, 50%. Also of note, two of the Lewiston JV players are daughters of Prairie graduates. Sammi Grant is the daughter of Noelle Harman Grant and is the granddaughter of Gordon and Marilyn Harman while Sydney McRoberts is the daughter of Heidi Stubbers McRoberts and is the granddaughter of Ralph and Debbie Stubbers. In the JV game Prairie scored the first 12 points of the game on their way to a 52-24 win. Prairie led 10-0 at the end of the first quarter with Delaney Lockett scoring 5 and Ellea Uhlenkott and Sydnee Bruegeman 2 each. Uhlenkott scored 2 free throws to open the second quarter for a 12-0 lead. Lewiston finally scored a pair of baskets then Prairie answered with a 10-0 run with Lockett and Trinity Martinez scoring 4 each and Hope Schwartz scoring the other 2. Lewiston scored a free throw but Prairie answered with a basket by Lockett for a 24-5 halftime lead. Prairie held the lead at close to 20 through most of the second quarter as Ali Rehder and Lockett each scored 5 points and Bruegeman scored 4. With 2:27 left in the quarter they led 35-16 after a 3-point play by Lewiston. Prairie then scored 5 straight to end the quarter with a 40-16 lead. After a Lewiston free throw, Prairie scored 6 straight for their biggest lead of the game at 46-17. Lewiston answered with 5 straight points to keep the game from running clock mode. Lockett scored 16 to lead the scoring with Schwartz scoring 7, Bruegeman, Martinez and Rehder 6 each, Olivia Klapprich 5, Uhlenkott 4 and Josie Remacle 2. Prairie held a 50-36 rebounding edge led by Bruegeman and Lockett with 8 each. Lockett had 5 steals and Uhlenkott had 4 while Schwartz had 8 assists and Lockett had 5. Prairie was 19 for 49 from the field, 39%, and 12 for 26 at the line, 46%. Lewiston was 8 for 52 from the field, 15%, and 8 for 20 at the line, 40%. Prairie took their first lead at 8-7 after a basket each by Shears and Peery. After Clarkston tied it with a free throw, Shears sank a 3-pointer to make it 11-8. That’s  how
the first quarter ended.
In the second quarter Prairie ramped up their full court pressure and Clarkston didn’t get the ball across halfcourt until better than 3 minutes into the period. They didn’t attempt their first shot until the 4:37 mark of the quarter. In the meantime Prairie had converted turnovers into points with a 13-0 run to open the quarter. Clarkston finally scored at the 4:05 mark but Prairie then finished the quarter with a 7-0 run for a 31-10 halftime lead. Krogh was the beneficiary of several of the turnovers with 3 baskets in transition for 6 points. Higgins converted 4 of 4 at the line and Shears and Peery each scored 3 points the quarter. Peery with a 3-point shot and Shears with an old-fashioned 3-point play. Prairie forced 13 turnovers in the second quarter alone. Prairie backed off on the press in the second half but still forced 8 turnovers in the third quarter mostly with half court defense. Peery opened the third quarter scoring with a 3 from the corner. Clarkston answered with a 3 but Prairie then went on a 13-2 run with strings of 7 and 6 points. Peery added another 3 while Chaffee hit two open lay-ups and a putback as each scored 6 in the quarter. Prairie led 51-18 after 3 quarters which invoked the running clock in the fourth. Higgins and Krogh each scored to open the fourth and give Prairie a 55-18 lead. At that point Prairie sent in the JV swing players and Clarkston outscored Prairie 4-10 the rest of the way. Krogh led a balanced scoring attack with 12 points with Peery scoring 11. Shears, Higgins and Chaffee each scored 8. Hiler scored 5 with Wemhoff scoring 3. Ellea Uhlenkott and Delaney Lockett each scored 2. Despite the fact Clarkston started 3 girls who were each 6’ tall, Prairie held a 33-32 rebounding edge. Wemhoff had 11 to lead the Pirates. Higgins and Peery had 5 steals each in the game with Shears and Krogh adding 4 each as 8 different players had a steal. Clarkston committed 32 turnovers to just 14 for Prairie. Higgins had 5 steals and Peery had 3 with 7 different players having at least 1 assist. Prairie was 22 for 59 from the field, 37%, and 11 for 20 from the line, 55%. Clarkston was 11 for 35 from the field, 31%, and 2 for 6 at the line, 33%. Prairie stays unbeaten on the season at 12-0. The JV team played the Pomeroy JV team and that game was also close in the first quarter but wound up as a 42-26 win for the Pirates. The score was tied at 7-7 after one quarter but Prairie outscored Pomeroy 16-6 in the second quarter to take a 23-13 halftime lead. Prairie was 6 for 8 from the field in the second quarter with Uhlenkott and Lockett each scoring 4 while Bruegeman scored 3. Remacle and Martinez each scored 2 in the quarter and Rehder had the remaining point. Prairie kept it going in the third quarter as the outscored Pomeroy 13-6 to push their lead to 36-19. Lockett scored 8 of those 13 points. The second unit got most of the playing time in the fourth but Pomeroy outscored them only by 1 at 6-7. Lockett wound up with 15 points to lead the scoring. Uhlenkott scored 6, Bruegeman 5, Remacle 4, Schwartz and Rehder 3 each and Lanie Forsmann, Molly Johnson and Martinez scored 2 each. Pomeroy had the rebounding edge at 32-37 with Johnson pulling down 7 to lead Prairie. Lockett had 6 steals and Schwartz had 4 assists. Prairie was 18 for 61 from the field, 30%, and 6 for 18 at the line, 33%. Pomeroy was 10 for 38 from the field, 26%, and 5 for 8 at the line, 63%.
