UI Ag Extension offers several workshops
The Basics & Beyond: Cattle Ownership & Management 201
University of Idaho Extension is offering: The Basics & Beyond: Cattle Ownership & Management 201 on Tuesday, Jan. 29 from 8 a.m. to noon at the Extension Office, 2200 Michigan Ave., Orofino.
Sign-in starts at 7:30 a.m.
This program builds on last year’s workshop (Introduction to Cattle Ownership and Management) by reviewing the basics for new cattle owners as well as adding more depth and intermediate topics for those with some cattle experience. Topics covered will include infrastructure needed to house, contain, and feed & water cattle, the economics of owning cattle, trade-offs of owning yearlings vs. raising cattle year-round, basic equipment, basics of grazing management, winter feeding, cattle health issues, do’s and don’ts of buying and selling cattle, cattle breeds, and other topics.
Owning and managing cattle can be rewarding in itself, but it also provides a way to manage and utilize pasture and rangeland which can improve grass-land health, control weeds, and reduce wildfire risk by reducing fine fuels. Owning cattle can also be a way of obtaining additional income from your rural property, and grazing can qualify you for property tax categories that lower valuation and reduce your property tax bills.
