The Summit Academy Lady Pirates picked a terrible time to lose their shooting touch as they fell to Logos in a District play-in game 28-37 at Cottonwood Saturday, Feb. 2. 
Taylor Lustig started well for the Patriots sinking her first 3 shots with Lexi Currier adding a free throw as Summit trailed just 7-8 at the end of the first quarter. Jade Prigge opened the second quarter with a pair of free throws to give Summit their first, and unfortunately only, lead at 9-8. 6’2” Bea Whitling, who missed a good portion of the season due to injury, scored 4 straight points to put Logos on top 9-12. Summit answered with a free throw by Currier and both ends of a 1 and 1 by Lustig to tie the game at 12-12. Logos’ other 6-footer, Shania Hughes, scored near the end of the half to give Logos a 12-14 halftime lead. Summit had gone 0 for 10 from the field in the quarter but 5 for 6 at the line to stay in the game. Summit scored just 3 points in the third quarter as they went 1 for 14 from the field, while Logos scored 8 to take a 15-22 lead into the fourth quarter. Summit extended the defense in the fourth and got some turnovers but struggled to capitalize while Logos got easy lay-ups when they were able to break the press. Jessie Sonnen banked in a shot to open the fourth quarter and a Logos turnover led to a basket by Lustig that cut the lead to 19-22 with 6:50 to play. Logos then went on a 2-13 run to all but put the game away. Lustig has Summit’s only points in that run. Now down by 14, Summit was able to only get back within 9 at the final buzzer. Lustig, a senior in her last game for the Patriots, led the scoring with 16 points. Prigge scored 5 with Erin Chmelik adding 3 points and Currier and Jessie Sonnen 2 each. Summit held a 37-33 rebounding edge led by Lustig with 11 and Prigge with 10. Currier and Jessie Sonnen each had 4 steals while Lustig and Chmelik had 3 each as Summit forced 32 turnovers while committing 24. Currier had 2 assists. Summit was just 9 for 56 from the field, 16%, and 10 for 14 at the line, 71%. Logos was 16 for 36 from the field, 44%, and 4 for 8 at the line, 50%. Whitling led Logos with 12 points while Hughes had 10. Summit ends their season with a 7-7 record. Spirit Week dress-up days included "Salad Dressing Day", "Board Game Day" and "Family Day". For Salad Dressing Day, each class was assigned a dressing. The juniors and seniors were assigned Thousand Island Dressing and wore tropical clothing. Students in second & third grade were assigned Ranch Dressing and were able to wear their cowboys shirts and jeans. Board Game day brought out some creative costumes, such as dressing up in the theme of Clue. In addition to characters such as Colonel Mustard, students took on dressing up as "the rope" and "the billiard room". At the beginning of the school year, students were divided into “families”, each containing students from all grade levels. These groups get together throughout the year for special activities, games and lunches. The families provide opportunities for practicing responsibility and mentoring in older students, and improving camaraderie between all grade levels. Each family chose a theme for Spirit Week’s family day. Groups dressed a princesses, stick men, flowers, in camo, in their favorite sports jersey, or as their favorite saint. Many events also took place throughout the week to celebrate Catholic Schools Week. On Monday, we celebrated teacher appreciation day in conjunction with the Feast of St. Thomas Aquinas, patron saint of Catholic Schools. Students said a special prayer for their teachers and offered them cards or a special treat. On the feast of St. John Bosco, students in 1st through 8th grade traveled to Sts. Peter & Paul school in Grangeville where they were able to hear the nationally known Catholic speaker Jon Leonetti. They participated in activities with the SPPS students, such as a quiz game about St. Peter, St. Paul, and St. John Bosco. All the students were interested to learn about our school’s new patron saint in preparation for changing the school’s name to St. John Bosco Academy this summer. The St. John Bosco Pizza Fundraiser was also completed with pizza deliveries taking place on Thursday afternoon. Students sold 627 pizzas, greatly exceeding their goal of 500. Nora Johnson won the competition of selling the most pizzas and won a free pizza of her choice as a prize.
