Lady Pirates win 1 of 3 at State
After a promising start, Prairie wound up losing 2 of their 3 games at State and finished without a trophy for the first time since 2011.
At Columbia High School in Nampa, Prairie opened the tournament with a dominant 78-31 win over District 3 champion Notus on Thursday, Feb. 14. On Friday, Feb. 15 they lost 27-30 to eventual champion Shoshone. On Saturday, Feb. 16 they lost in the third place game to Lapwai 64-67.
Vs. Notus
Prairie’s opening game against Notus was competitive for the first 5 minutes. Then it was all Pirates.
Notus scored first but Prairie answered with a 6-0 run as Jordyn Higgins, India Peery and Theresa Wemhoff each scored.Theresa Wemhoff plays tight defense against Notus. Prairie forced Notus into over 40 turnovers in a big win.
Notus hit a 3-pointer to pull back within 1 at the 3:42 mark of the first quarter but didn’t score again until the 5:57 mark of the second quarter. In between Prairie reeled off 24 straight points mostly fueled by their full-court press forcing turnovers.
Prairie finished the first quarter with 18 straight points. Ciara Chaffee scored 6 of those with Kristyna Krogh scoring 4 and Peery 2 while Wemhoff and Madison Shears each hit a 3-pointer.
Higgins scored to open the second quarter and Peery followed with a pair of baskets to make it 30-5.
Notus broke the run with a free throw but Prairie then reeled off a 10-0 run with Shears scoring 6 of those 10 points to make it 40-6.
Prairie outscored Notus 9-8 the rest of the half for a 49-14 lead.
The Pirates had forced 13 turnovers from Notus in each of the first two quarters.
Prairie backed off on the press in the second half and were actually outscored by Notus in the first 4 minutes of the third quarter 6-9.
With 3:25 left in the period Chaffee scored after a steal by Peery and that kicked off a quarter closing 12-0 run that made it 67-23.
There is no 30-point mercy rule in state tournament games so the teams had to play out the full fourth quarter.
Krogh scored a pair of free throws to open the fourth quarter and Higgins added a basket to make it a 16-0 run.
Notus then scored 6 straight points at the free throw line before Shears connected on her third 3-pointer of the game.
Prairie wound up winning by 47.
The Pirates had 4 players score in double figures with Peery, Shears and Wemhoff scoring 14 each and Chaffee scoring 13. Higgins added 8 points with Krogh scoring 7, Ellea Uhlenkott 6 and Alexis Hiler 2.
Prairie had a 33-29 edge on the boards with Chaffee pulling down 6 to lead the Pirates. Krogh and Peery added 5 rebounds each.
Peery nearly had a double-double with 9 steals while Wemhoff and Chaffee had 5 each. Peery and Shears had 4 assists each while Higgins and Lockett added 3 each.
Prairie was 33 for 68 from the field, 49%, and 7 for 16 at the line, 44%. Notus was 8 for 29 from the field, 28%, and 11 for 19 at the line, 58%.

Vs. Shoshone
The semifinal game against Shoshone was totally different than the opener against Notus.
Prairie got off to a good start as they scored the first 8 points of the game and forced 9 turnovers from the Indians.
Madison Shears puts up a shot against Shoshone.Problems started to show though as Prairie struggled with their shooting despite taking an 8-0 lead.
Shears got things started with a back door lay-up off a feed from Peery. Wemhoff sank a free throw. Peery scored a putback. Hiler hit the first of 2 free throws and Higgins scored after a steal.
Shoshone finally got on the board with 15 seconds left to make it 8-2 at the end of the first quarter.
Prairie hit just 3 of 13 first quarter shots.
Shoshone’s Patti Fitzgerald sank a 3-point to open the second quarter but Prairie came back with a basket by Hiler and a 3 by Shears for a 13-5 lead with 3:58 left.
From that point Shoshone took over, outscoring Prairie 2-9 to end the half with 5 of those points coming at the free throw line.
Wemhoff scored Prairie’s only points after rebounding her own missed 3-point attempt at the 1:00 mark.
Shoshone played a matchup 2-3 zone and Prairie seemed content to try and shoot over it instead of working the ball inside.
After turning the ball over 9 times in the first quarter, Shoshone settled down and committed just 8 turnovers the rest of the game.
Shoshone took their first lead on a putback to open the second half and then made it 15-18 on another basket.
Shears tied it with a 3-pointer at the 4:17 mark, Prairie’s first points since the 1:00 mark of the second quarter. That ended a 0-9 Shoshone scoring run.
Shears put Prairie back on top the next trip down the floor with another 3-pointer. Wemhoff then drove the lane for a basket to put Prairie up 23-18 with 1:53 left in the third quarter. Neither team scored the rest of the period.
Shoshone scored to cut the lead to 3 but Wemhoff answered with a basket off an inbounds feed from Higgins.
Shoshone answered back with a 3 from Fitzgerald to cut the lead to 25-23.
Wemhoff then picked up her 5th foul on the offensive end and that turned into another 3 by Shoshone as they took back the lead at 25-26 with 2:50 left.
Prairie missed a shot and Shoshone rebounded and went to a spread to run clock. They worked it around then missed a shot in close with Shears making the rebound. That led to a basket on the other end by Peery that put Prairie back on top 27-26 with 52 seconds left.
Shoshone came right back down the floor and scored a lay-up to take back the lead.
Prairie had a couple of opportunities, but the shots wouldn’t fall. Shoshone helped by missing a couple of front ends of 1 and 1’s but wound up rebounding the first miss. 
Shoshone rebounded a missed Prairie shot and Higgins wound up fouling out to send Cierra Hennings to the line. Hennings made both free throws with 19 seconds left for a 3-point lead.
Prairie’s 3-point attempt missed and Shoshone rebounded and ran out the clock.
Shears was Prairie’s leading scorer with 11 points with Wemhoff scoring 7, Peery 4, Hiler 3 and Higgins 2.
Shoshone had a 28-32 rebounding edge. Shears and Wemhoff each had 6 to lead Prairie.
Shears had 3 steals and Higgins had 2 assists.
Prairie hit just 11 of 42 shots, 26%, and were 2 for 5 at the line, 40%. Shoshone was 10 for 31 from the field, 32%, and 7 for 11 at the line, 78%.

Vs. Lapwai
After losing to Shoshone in the semifinals, the last team Prairie expected to be playing in the third place game was Lapwai, who lost to Genesee in the other semifinal.
With Prairie and Lapwai both in the third place game this was the first time since the 1A division split in 2009 that neither Lapwai nor Prairie was in the championship game. In 2008, the last year 1A was all together, was also the last time Genesee was in the championship game as they won it that yearIndia Peery drives toward the hoop against Lapwai in the third place game at State. In the third place game this year, Prairie and Lapwai battled back and forth all game long in the closest of their 4 battles this season.
Lapwai took a 0-4 lead in the game but Prairie connected on 5 of 6 free throws to take their first lead at 5-4.
Lapwai again built a 4-point lead at 8-12 but a 3 each by Shears and Prairie put Prairie back on top at 14-12.
Lapwai tied it but Chaffee made 2 free throws in the final seconds to give Prairie a 16-14 lead after 1 quarter.
A 3 by Peery and a steal and ensuing basket by Shears gave Prairie a 21-14 lead early in the second quarter but the Wildcats came back with three 3-pointers in a 4-11 run to tie the game at 25-25.
Wemhoff drive in for a lay-up to put Prairie back on top and with Peery hitting 1 free throw and Krogh a pair, Prairie held a 30-28 lead at the half.
Lapwai came out and got a quick 3 pointer from freshman Grace Sobotta to retake the lead in the third quarter.
Prairie took back the lead on a basket by Peery at 35-34 but Lapwai answered with 2 baskets by Grace Sobotta.
Lapwai led by 5 at 37-42 when Peery drove in for a lay-up and then got hit with a technical foul for doing a little handclap in front of Lapwai’s defender. Something they’d been doing to Prairie much of the game. Glory Sobotta converted both free throws and that was Peery’s third foul.
Peery recovered by taking the ball inside and getting fouled. She made both free throws and then added another 10 seconds later to cut the deficit to 1 at 43-44.
Lapwai answered with a 3 by Grace Sobotta to take a 43-47 lead into the fourth quarter.
Shears converted a 3-point play to open the fourth and Lapwai answered with 2 free throws.
Prairie then put together a 7-0 run to take a 53-49 lead with 5:00 to play. Peery started it with a 3-pointer. Shears added 2 free throws and then Peery and Higgins each scored a free throw.
Lapwai got back within 1 at 53-52. Wemhoff scored to put Prairie back on top by 3 but Lapwai tied it with a 3 by Aurelia Ellenwood.
Shears made 2 free throws for Prairie but Lapwai answered with 2 free throws and then took the lead again on a basket with 3:44 left.
Peery tied it at 59- with 2 free throws but Lapwai scored 1 free throw to retake the lead.
Hiler hit a shot from just inside the free throw line to give Prairie a 61-60 lead with 2:00 left.
Lapwai then tied it on a free throw by Grace Sobotta and took back the lead on a basket by Raequel Domebo.
From that point on Prairie either missed shots or turned the ball over and wound up fouling as Lapwai scored their next 4 points at the free throw line for a 61-67 lead with 5 seconds to play.
Shears hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to cut the final margin to 3 points.
It was the first time since 2011, Lori Mader’s first year as coach, that the Lady Pirates did not bring home at least a third place trophy. That year they also lost in the third place game to Challis as Lapwai beat C.V. in the title game.
Peery wound up with 23 points to lead all scorers with Shears scoring 18. Higgins added 7 points with Wemhoff scoring 6. Hiler and Chaffee scored 4 each and Krogh scored 2.
Prairie edged Lapwai 35-34 on the boards. Krogh and Peery each had 7 to lead the Pirates with Wemhoff and Chaffee adding 6 each.
Wemhoff had 3 steals and Higgins had 6 assists.
Prairie was 17 for 46 from the field, 37%, and 25 for 32 at the line, 78%. Lapwai was 22 for 55 from the field, 40%, and 17 for 27 at the line, 63%.
Prairie finishes their season with a 19-5 record.
