Library Corner
We, the staff of Prairie Community Library often ask our patrons to write reviews of our books they read.  Frances Conklin selected a book by E. B. White, published in 1970, and titled The Trumpet of the Swan.  This is her beautiful and gracious review:
“The story opens in Canada then moves to eastern Montana, Boston, Philadelphia and back to the wilds of Montana and Canada.
“Author E. B. White is perhaps best known for his children’s books, Charlotte’s Web and Stuart Little.  Equally engaging though, The Trumpet of the Swan is a make-belief tale of compassion, adaptation, and triumph in the face of uncertainty and adversity.
“The main characters are Louis, a mute trumpeter-swan, and Sam, a young boy from Montana who is fascinated with the ways of the natural world.  Sam and Louis become friends through a chance encounter in the back woods of Canada.  In ensuing seasons they help each other find their destinies as adults.
“Although a “Chapter Book,” for elementary readers, this story with lovely pen-and-ink illustrations would be equally appealing to younger children as a “Read-To” series.  For adults long-removed from their own youth, reading The Trumpet of the Swan is a fine, easy adventure back to those times.
