From shotputter to a shrink
The next time you see Kyler Shumway, you'll get to call him Doctor.  This May, Kyler graduated from George Fox University's Graduate School with a doctorate in clinical psychology.
Some might remember that Kyler left Cottonwood in 2010 on a full-ride scholarship to attend Duke University as a shotputter, where he competed as a four-year varsity athlete on the track team.  He and his high school sweetheart, Mary Shears (now Shumway), have been off adventuring together since they married in 2011.  Mary has worked and continued her own education in Information Technology and, now that he is in his ninth and final year of post-high school education, Kyler continues to express his love and appreciation for her support.
Kyler has accomplished a lot since 2010.  He graduated with distinction from Duke with a degree in psychology.  Kyler published his first book, The Friendship Formula, which he wrote to help teens and adults learn essential friendship skills (you can check it out on Amazon.com).  At the graduation ceremony at George Fox University Kyler won the award for having the best doctoral dissertation among the 2019 graduates in the psychology program  He has spoken and continues to speak at national and local conferences on topics related to psychology and human development.  He has even been featured as an expert host on national television to talk about bullying, health, and other topics.
He is currently stationed at Baylor Scott & White Health in Temple, Texas, and will begin his postdoctoral fellowship at Deep Eddy Psychotherapy in Austin later this year.
Kyler continues to express his appreciation for the friends, family, and teachers who have helped him along the way.  In this final step of education, he specifically wanted to thank  "Dr. Bruner, Mrs. Deiss, Mrs. Duclos, Mr. Eynon, Mr. Hasselstrom, Mrs. Hinkelman, Mr. Mader, Mrs. Mcleod, and Dr. Sigler for all they did to prepare me well for college and beyond.  Prairie High School has truly hosted some incredible educators, coaches, and healers - you are all making such a difference."
If you'd like to connect or send Kyler a message, you can contact him through his website at KylerShumway.com.
