School Board meets
The budget for the 2019-2020 school year was approved at the June meeting of the school board Monday, June 17.
During the budget hearing board member Gus Hoene asked if there was anywhere in the budget that was a big difference from last year. Denise Uhlenkott said the only big difference was in the amount of Forest Funds expected. That’s down to about $22,000 after getting over $300,000 this past year.
Shawn Wolter was approved for hire as the new boys head basketball coach. Principal Jon Rehder reported he has already done open gyms with the team and taken them to summer league games. He appears to be a very good fit. Rehder said they are still in need of an assistant/JV coach.
Also approved for hire was Katrina Bentley for the school nurse position.
Eric Coffelt was approved for hire for the K-10 PE/Health position. Superintendent Rene’ Forsmann said he comes highly recommended. He’s also interested in the junior high assistant football position.
Resignations were accepted from Tessa Howard, Brandi Polumski and Nancy Arnzen.
The board discussed and then approved the preschool agreement for another year.
They also approved putting out surplus items for sealed bids. There is a notice about this on page 7 of this week’s Chronicle.
Jake Forsmann was present to talk about need for some roof repair at the Elementary School. Ice got in under the tin roof and that led to water dripping inside the building. To do the whole roof looks to be about $113,000. They are looking at breaking it into stages, getting the worst sections done first. The board approved doing $48,000 worth of work this summer on the worst sections with an eye toward doing the rest over the next couple of years.
A couple of budgeted funds transfers were approved. $10,000 was approved from the general fund to the food service fund to make up a shortfall in that fund. The board also approved a transfer of $37,000 from the MAFA fund to the general fund. This is the final transfer from the sale of the K-1 building.
In the facilities report Forsmann reported work started last week on the heating and cooling systems on the upper floor of the Jr./Sr. High School.
They decided to go with carpet squares in redoing the Elementary School Band Room instead of traditional roll carpet based on recommendations.
Lighting ballasts are being replaced at the elementary and jr./sr. high buildings.
6 toilet valves at the high school need to be replaced and that work has started.
Rick’s Pump Service will install some drain tile at the front parking lot and entrance to the Elementary School to take care of some water issues before the parking lots get a new sealcoat.
A couple of future projects have come up. The Monastery is looking at upgrading the water line from the well to the cistern at an approximate cost of $100,000. Since the high school gets their water from the Monastery, the school district is expected to help with some of these costs.
Also Forsmann said she got a visit from the city about the auxiliary gym’s water and sewer. Due to city requirements they will need to get their own separate hook-ups. She will meet with Ryan Uhlenkott and the city to see what they have to do.
In her principal’s report Forsmann said the Field Day was a success and the awards ceremony went very well.
She reported Erin Shears is going to need a support person at the Center for Discovery for times when she wants to go see her children in their activities. Forsmann said she is looking at going with a high school student for this.
The Elementary cook position is still open and they will be needing a 2-day counselor at the Elementary School.
In her superintendent’s report Forsmann noted the music position is still open although Jon Rehder said he has someone who has expressed interest.
They received a $10,000 grant from the St. Joseph’s Foundation to pay for Skills and Clinical Nurses for the Region II Academy for the 2019-20 school year. This is the final year the schools involved will fund this program as it will go to Idaho Distance Learning and LCSC for the 2020-21 school year.
Rehder reported the band concert went well.
The FFA banquet also went well although it wasn’t as well attended as they had hoped. They are looking into different dates for next year as the end of May is a very busy time for everyone.
The blood drive was a success with 35 successful donors, qualifying the school for a $2,000 STEM grant from Vitalant. See photo and story on page 1.
The gym is being decorated this summer with various paintings by Shane Chapman. They are also going to replace the Plexiglas for the upstairs railing.
Rehder also discussed the Pirate Chest and game passes. The Pirate Chest has been the same amount since it started and with cost of officials going up as well as other costs, he is looking to increase the asking rates. He may share this information and the proposed costs for adult, senior citizen and family game passes in a future edition of the Chronicle.
The board meeting adjourned at 8:26 p.m. The next regular meeting will also be the annual meeting. It will be Monday, July 15 at 7 p.m.
