Law Enforcement Officers with the USDA Forest Service are seeking any information the public has related to recent damage to the restroom at the Weir Creek trailhead, located off U.S. Highway 12 on the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests’ Lochsa-Powell Ranger District.
On March 18, Forest Service officials found shotgun shells near the restroom, as well as a broken window and apparent shooting damage to the restroom door. Costs to repair the restroom totaled $800.
Forest Service Law Enforcement Officers encourage anyone with information about this incident to please call (208) 451-6383.
If you witness resource or facility damage while visiting your National Forest or see something else that doesn’t seem right, please call your local ranger station to report what you saw. The Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests reminds the public that certain recreation sites on the forest have been closed, effective March 28, for public health and safety due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Sites closed include developed campgrounds on the forest and certain other recreation sites including the Jerry Johnson, Stanley, and Weir Creek hot springs. More information on these closures is available online at www.fs.usda.gov/nezperceclearwater or by calling your local ranger station.
The Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests appreciates visitors’ safe and respectful use of public lands. Although certain sites are closed for public health and safety, National Forest System lands on the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests are not. Visitors are urged to take the current precautions recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and adhere to current local, state, and federal guidance and restrictions.
