Letters to the editor from this week's Chronicle:

Dear Editor,
The voters in Idaho County will be making a critically important decision on May 19, 2020. There are two individuals seeking the majority vote for the office of Sheriff. I fully support Doug Ulmer for Sheriff of Idaho County. I have known Doug nearly all of my life and have worked closely with him on many different school related activities.
The one activity that I would like to talk about is the work that Doug has done with raising money for the local food banks.  Doug approached me (Prairie High School) along with three other athletic directors from Grangeville, Clearwater Valley, and Kamiah to try and get Idaho County Sheriff’s Department more involved with the schools.  Out of that meeting came the rivalry basketball games known as the Idaho County Shootout and the Upriver Rampage.  In the nine years since the inception of these games, these four local schools have raised more than a $150,000 in cash and food for the local food banks of Idaho County.  I promise you, without Doug’s relentless work on this idea, this would have never happened.  Doug has also worked closely with our school youth by starting up the Cadet Program as well as making several appearances in my Criminal Justice class.
Doug’s expertise, professionalism and most importantly, his tireless work ethic, are beyond reproach and invaluable to the future success of the department.
I have never publicly endorsed a candidate for public office. As a matter of fact, this is the first person ever for me.  It’s Doug’s passion for Idaho County that won me over.  After all, Doug has lived in Idaho County all of his life and worked in law enforcement for 33 years. Not a more dedicated man than Doug! Please vote Doug Ulmer for Sherriff.
Remember that you have to vote by mail this year.  You can obtain a ballot by going to: https://idahovotes.gov/absentee-request

To the Editor,
I have known Doug Ulmer for much of his adult life. I have known him as a coaching colleague, as a family man helping to raise three children to adulthood and to become productive citizens, and by watching him as law officer interact with people in a proactive way.
Since the Idaho County expert from Georgia did not understand how Lieutenant Ulmer could be qualified to be the sheriff, I will attempt to catch him up on just a few points. First of all, Lieutenant Ulmer has been working in law enforcement for thirty plus years, mostly in Idaho County. He has worked for five different sheriffs and moved up the chain of command to the number three position in the department food chain. He knows the people of Idaho County and their needs because he interacts with them every day.
The gentleman from Georgia probably never heard of Lieutenant Ulmer swimming the Clearwater River in high water to rescue a little girl who had been swept away from upstream. He probably doesn't know of the many times over the years that he has risked his well being as a member of the dive team in rescue or recovery operations, often in extreme conditions.
Lieutenant Ulmer started the cadet program in the county's high schools to help educate its participants in the nuances of law enforcement and to help them to understand its purpose, whenever there is a cause, the Idaho County Food Bank being an example, Doug Ulmer is at the forefront. If you need help, he is there.
Electing Doug Ulmer is a no brainer. He is young (my standards only) and experienced, energetic, and able. There is no doubt that he is what Idaho County needs.

To the Editor,
The May primary election is quickly approaching. If you’re still not sure about who you’re casting your vote for for Idaho County Sheriff, let me tell you why Doug Ulmer has my vote. I could talk about Doug as an officer, but he’s a friend, a husband and a father, too.
I’ve known Doug since I started working for the sheriff’s office as a dispatcher 12 years ago. He was always the guy you could count on for anything, at any time. If Doug was on scene of a particularly stressful call, I felt confident that he would handle it. He was the secure, composed voice on the other end of the radio amidst the chaos.
I’m no longer working for the sheriff’s office, but my husband and I are still good friends of Doug and his family. He’s incredibly caring, genuine, loyal and approachable. These are important traits for a sheriff to have.
Doug is a natural leader because he has a calming presence about him. He is practical and he has innovative, fresh ideas for the department. Most importantly, he and his intended undersheriff, Brian Hewson, are two of the most honest, upstanding men you’ll ever meet.
It’s time for a change here in Idaho County. We need someone to help restore trust in the very people we depend on to protect us. That person is Doug Ulmer. Vote for Doug Ulmer for Idaho County Sheriff.

Dear Editor,
Republican to Republicans, I’m voting for Doug Ulmer and urging you, too!  Sheriff Giddings barely eked out reelection in 2016, under representing the majority party of the county, so I know many are in already agreement.
Though the Giddings family seems to be an Idaho County Dynasty, Ulmer is the best choice for sheriff.  Giddings wife is the leader of the Idaho County Republican Central Committee (ICRCC), and his daughter is in the legislature.  I happily support two, but Sheriff Giddings has given me multiple reasons to question ability as an officer and a leader.
I have known both candidates since about 1995.  Doug Ulmer has demonstrated to me calm, lawful, ethical thinking in both his personal life and professional.  He worked his way up through the ranks of the ICSO while raising a family.  He and his wife Tina, an active businesswoman, slowly and steadily raised their lot in life, rearing three wonderful children.
How will Doug Ulmer handle day to day issues?  First, he will do a thorough background check of potential employees.  Next, he will hold employees accountable, while still supporting them.  God knows, that this is a tough time to be in law enforcement, but we can’t have sexual predators wearing badges.  There will not be any good ol’ boy favoritism.
Doug Ulmer knows Idaho County and its people because he is a lifelong resident.  He has a vested interest in his relationships with people and communities, so he will “buy” back into the communities that have recently been under-served by the Sheriff.  His choice and announcement of Brian Hewson for Undersheriff shows a great beginning.
I see Doug supervising firm, fair, and consistent law enforcement, emphasizing the major crimes over the regulatory issues.  He will fulfill his duties while fulfilling his oath and protecting individual rights.

An Open Letter to Idaho Congressional Delegation –
We are Idaho’s motorcoach industry. We are family and independently owned businesses you represent, transporting 1.7 million residents, tourists and children annually across the region. We connect our rural towns to urban centers. we are visible in every community and vital to America’s transportation network.
Before COVID-19, we employed 548 hardworking individuals across Idaho and contributed $80 million in economic revenue. Like many transportation industries, that has all changed and virtually every bus company across America has stopped operating. We support the public health restrictions put in place to help flatten the spread of COVID-19, but when people emerge from this crisis, we want our employees to have jobs and bring visitors back here. But today, our future is very uncertain.
Before Congress left Washington, DC for a one-month hiatus they passed a $2 TRILLION aid package to help large and small business. That package included nearly $100 BILLION for every mode of passenger transportation (airlines, Amtrak, transit) except for private buses. Our voice in Congress was ignored, leaving our industry and our employees on the side of the road.
As the federal government focuses on recovery, we urge you to remember that we bring your constituents to work; your kids on school trips; we take your church groups on tours; and we drive tourism in our state…literally. We connect America. If we go away, those experiences go away. We need YOUR support NOW.

Redneck Review!
No. 260 - 4/20/2020
A most unusual RNR follows!  Essentially you will find here my PLEA FOR HELP!  Would someone volunteer to help me understand what is going on in this country I love today? Read below, and you will know the reason for the PLEA!
1) Everyone knows that all news today is dominated by Coronavirus! In America, this LAND OF THE FREE, people are supposed to obey a LOCK DOWN, hard to understand, as it is a direct contradiction of our 1st AMENDMENT. There you will still see: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof, or abridging the freedom of speech... or the right of the people to peaceably assemble"
Please explain why our Constitution and Bill of Rights containing the statement above is:
a)Accepted around the world and in history as one as one of the greatest documents ever printed, and b) Recognized as a basic principle of this country as originally founded, and is still one reason for the unparalleled success we have in establishing the most FREE and the most PROSPEROUS nation the world has ever known!  Is that not the reason our problem has never been with people LEAVING our country, but with the MILLIONS wanting to come here!  Please help me understand the reason for the national LOCK DOWN, dictated by our government in this LAND OF THE FREE,  and supported by most churches and religions! So tight is the lock down that we citizens, guaranteed FREEDOM OF  ASSEMBLY, risk arrest in some areas for visiting old family members, or even playing with our children in a nearly vacant public park? (No joke, this has happened!) This, in the land of the FREE?
2) No time here for all proof needed, but for the interested, available in the news or computer searches, the current Infected/death ratio of Coronavirus in the U.S., according to Apple's SIRI,  is 36,109/753,317 = .0048. Thus SIRI  reports about 4.8 deaths for every confirmed infected 100 people.  Google reports a ratio of about 40,000/750,000  deaths to infected, which is .05 or about 5 deaths for every 100 infected people. But the most shocking statistic of all is the death ratio compared to our current population, Google says about 40,000 divided by 330 million!  Do the math in your head or on a calculator, and you get around 1 death out of every 8250 citizens in our country! Seems to me the odds of dying from CORONA is far too small to warrant denying the right to visit relatives, goo church, ball games, etc. Now I hasten to add that it made sense that Trump and company denied access to our country, and called for a lock down at the beginning, since a quick escalation of a new virus could threaten to overwhelm our medical facilities. But now, especially since recent data shows the death curve not only flattening  but receding. Check it yourself!  Under the circumstances. and in view of the facts above. I  for one shout loud with Patrick Henry's famous rant over 200 years ago: "... Give me liberty or give me death!"  (See RNR #258). After all, what is more serious in the minds of we, the  "most-threatened" older people, death by infection, or depression from isolation? Especially when our odds are favorable, only 1 to 8250?
3) But the most blatant stupidity of all is the fact that NO ONE EVER MENTIONS , that ABORTION has killed over 61 million innocent babes IN THE  U.S. since 1973, and is still  killing them in the womb, and sometimes legally allowing them to die later after a botched abortion,  at a rate of 800,000/day, also in the U.S.?  Does your math not tell you that this is over 2000/day of the most innocent and helpless of our future citizens? Oh, yes! Does not 61 million aborted divided by 330 million of us mean that roughly one in every 5 or 6 of us alive today could have been the aborted one by our parents?  Think about it!  Does it not suggest that far too many of us in the U.S. today are NUMB to the facts, or maybe even brain dead?
