Letters to the editor from this week's Chronicle

To the Editor:
Very few things are absolute. If you stick your head in a bucket of water you absolutely must pull it out and soon. However, Wearing a mask is not an absolute good.
I thank Dr. D. Eric Williams for his letter of Oct. 1, 2020; for recognition that "masking up" will slow the spread of the SARS-Co V-2 is not supported by relevant research.
I appreciate Dr's article to bring reason to the why, where and when concerning mask use.
Often what I see and hear seems to reflect the opinion a mask is totally safe and should be MANDATED for everyone. I vehemently disagree. A mask is not an absolute. Mask use has pro and con effects.
I recently suffered a sore throat after 2 hrs of mask use. The mask forced me to inhale my germs that I normally exhale. My glasses fogged with every exhale and cleared with every inhale. So I pinched the mask harder on my nose. As a result I had to breath dryer and  dirtier air by mouth. The resulting injury to my upper airway allowed local bacteria to infect my upper airway.
I cannot prove I would have remained healthy without the mask; nor can I prove I am right when I blame the mask for my sore throat. But I will believe it did anyway.
I concur that wearing a mask is appropriate in some circumstances. However, the clip of a mother, outdoors, at her son’s ballgame, being assaulted, tased and handcuffed by 3 person for the crime of not wearing a mask some 15 feet away from any other person, I think the harm to her and her son and his teammates was real in terms of fear of the law. And that case was criminal overreach by the law.
I believe government mandates to wear a mask is arbitrary misuse of power.

Dear Editor,
Huge numbers of people will be evicted and small businesses will close because they cannot pay their rent or their mortgage. It’s time for the banks to step up.
Taxpayers bailed out the “too big to fail” banks in 2008. It’s time for banks to repay the favor.
A moratorium on mortgage loans will not break the bank, but it will keep people in their homes and give businesses a lifeline.
If you agree, please toll U.S. Senator Mike Crapo, of Idaho. He is a member of the U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs. His Lewiston office is at 313 D Street, Lewiston, ID 83501 and his phone number is 208-743-1491.
Sincerely,
Michelle Perdue

Redneck Review!
No. 286 - 10/19/2020
Once again we paraphrase an age old bit of wisdom: "Those who do not learn from the mistakes of the past are doomed to repeat them."  Or another used constantly in my econ and government classes: "You gotta know the past to understand the present, and predict the future."  So with these two statements in mind, this old fossil Redneck passes along to you readers some info from the past that could be critical in our survival this November.
The following is taken from Cleon Skousen's book: THE NAKED COMMUNIST, which was written in the mid 1900's, and which was one of the intriguing books read by myself in the 1960"s. American intelligent agents obtained a copy of these goals discussed by the International Communist Party at a meeting held at that time. Statements following the quoted sections are my own comments.
1)"Provide American aid to all nations regardless of Communist domination."
2)"Grant recognition of Red China. Admission of Red China to the UN."  America stood by while the Free Chinese under Chiang Kai Shek were forced out of China to Formosa."
3)"Promote the UN as the only hope for mankind."  A Godless document signed by us with Alger Hiss, secretary of state at the time, as our representative there. Hiss later went to jail convicted of being a Communist agent in our government. In the 1940's
4)"Do away with all loyalty oaths."
5)"Capture one or both of political parties in the United States."
6)"Get control of the schools. Use them as transmission belts for socialism...Soften the curriculum. Get control of teacher associations. Put the party line in textbooks. Get control all student newspapers."
7)"Get control of the press. Get control of book-review associations... and policy makers."
8)"Get control of key positions in radio, TV and motion pictures."
9)"Continue discrediting American culture...eliminate all good culture...substitute shapeless and meaningless art forms... control art critics... and art museums...'Our plan is to promote ugliness, repulsive, meaningless art' ."
10)"Eliminate laws governing obscenity by calling them 'censorship,' a violation of free speech."
11)"Break down standards of morality by promoting pornography and obscenity in books...TV."
12)"Promote homo-sexuality, degeneracy and promiscuity as 'normal, natural, healthy.' "
13)"Infiltrate the churches, replace revealed religion with 'social religion.' Discredit the Bible..."
14)"Eliminate prayer in the schools, it violates 'separation of church and state.' "
15)"Discredit the American Constitution, call it inadequate, old-fashioned, and out of step."
16)"Discredit the American founding fathers. Present them as selfish aristocrats."
17)"Infiltrate and gain control of labor unions... and big business."
18)"Continue giving Russia access to the U.S. Patent Office."
19)"Support any socialist movement to give control over any part of the culture, education, social agencies, welfare programs, mental health districts..."
20)"Belittle all forms of American culture and discourage the teaching of American history...give more emphasis to Russian history since the Communist takeover."
21)"Eliminate all laws which interfere with the operation of the Communist apparatus."
22)"Permit free trade among all nations regardless of whether or not items are used for war."
And many more!  Read Skousen's book mentioned above for more goals and important information!
Only some older people like myself know that 75% of these 1954 goals have been achieved!
So repeated here:  "You gotta know the past to understand the present and predict the future."
And the future IS NOW with the upcoming November election weeks away! Vote wisely!
