Vs. Grangeville
In what would have been the Idaho County Shootout game at Cottonwood against Grangeville, the Bulldogs came out strong and then saw Prairie make adjustments defensively and pull away for the win.
Grangeville’s Bailey Vanderwall opened the scoring but Prairie took the lead when Lockett connected on 3 of 4 free throws.
The lead didn’t last long as Grangeville’s Camden Barger scored a basket and 2 free throws and Macy Smith added a basket for a 3-8 Grangeville lead.
A free throw by Lockett was answered by 2 from Barger for a 4-10 Grangeville lead.
Uhlenkott finally scored Prairie’s first basket at the 3:13 mark with a drive to the hoop and Shears followed with a drive to the hoop to pull the Pirates within 8-10.
A basket by Vanderwall was answered by two free throws by Shears. Barger scored with 1:55 left but Prairie came back to tie it on a basket each by Wemhoff and Shears as the first quarter ended at 14-14.
Barger had scored 8 of Grangeville’s 14 first quarter points but would attempt only 4 shots and score on 2 second quarter free throws the rest of the game.
Grangeville’s Zoe Lutz put Grangeville back on top but Uhlenkott tied it with 2 free throws. A defensive rebound by Wemhoff led to the go-ahead basket by Lockett. Lockett then fed Uhlenkott for a lay-up and a 20-16 lead with 23 seconds left in the half.
Barger scored 2 free throws with 8 seconds left to make it 20-18 at the half but those would be her final 2 points of the game.
Vanderwall and Lutz each scored to open the second half and put Grangeville back on top but Lockett tied it with a lay-up at the 5:55 mark and a minute later put Prairie back on top with 2 free throws. Shears then hit a big 3-pointer with 4:31 left for a 27-22 lead.
Grangeville scored 2 baskets to cut the lead to 1 at 27-26 but a steal by Schlader led to a basket by Uhlenkott and then Shears fed Lockett for a backdoor lay-up to put Prairie back up by 5. Shears then hit her second 3-pointer of the quarter to give Prairie a 34-26 lead after 3 quarters.
Foul trouble was starting to be felt on both side. Schlader sat out much of the first half after picking up 3 quick fouls and by the end of the third quarter both she and Uhlenkott had picked up their fourth. Meanwhile Barger, Talia Brown and Smith were all in foul trouble for Grangeville.
Schlader scored a free throw to open the fourth quarter and a huge 3 pointer by Lockett put Prairie up by 12 points with 5:35 to play.
A 2-8 run by Grangeville pulled the Bulldogs back with 6 with 2:18 left to play but they would get no closer. In fact that was the last time they would score as Prairie scored the final 9 points of the game. After a basket by Uhlenkott, the final 7 points of the game all came at the free throw line with Shears going 4 for 4 and Wemhoff 3 for 4.
Shears wound up leading all scorers with 18 points with Lockett adding 15 and Uhlenkott 10. Wemhoff scored 5 and Schlader 1. Despite all the Prairie foul trouble with 3 players winding up with 4 fouls, Grangeville did not even attempt a free throw in the second half.
In the JV game Grangeville scored first but that was the only time Prairie was behind as they went on to win 32-18.
After Grangeville’s 0-2 start, Prairie scored the next 10 straight points with 6 of those by Prigge. Walsh and Rehder each added a basket.
