Thank you from Bethany Children's Home and Sister Mary's Children
Recently, Bethany Children’s Home completed a year long project of design, permitting, and labor to build a very necessary addition. A new classroom has added a dedicated space for the preschool and the early childhood education program. It has also provided a dedicated meeting space for community social workers, board meetings, and a safe and secure space for families of children to visit.
Rose Kasumbi is the acting director of Bethany Children’s Home, a Sister Mary’s Children partnering project. Bethany’s Children Home was founded by Sister Mary Paulé Tacke and the Sisters of the Precious Blood in 1991 to support young expectant mothers and their children. Later, Bethany became a place of safety for abused and abandoned children. Rose’s journey to Bethany Home began in 2003 when she and her family immigrated to South Africa from Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo. Amidst political strife that impacted their lives daily, Rose and her husband made the decision to immigrate in the hopes of raising their family in peace. Rose, a nurse, and her husband, a physician, chose to move to South Africa to provide new opportunities for their growing family. At the time of Rose’s hiring as director, Sister Mary Paulé was retired but still very involved with the leadership at Bethany. Sister believed strongly in Rose’s compassion, advocacy, and her ability to provide leadership. Rose wanted to share a little insight of what the community of Cottonwood’s support has meant this past year.
“The community of Cottonwood has been generous to Bethany and our children for so long. The downstairs classroom is proudly dedicated to all living in Cottonwood and was organized when Chalena’s (Wimer-Stubers) came to support us. Now, our newest building addition also is complete thanks to this community and everyone who donates. We now have a new classroom and meeting space. It is a blessing and a better space than we could have ever imagined. God bless this community. We are so grateful, and I wish I could thank you each in person.”
