Lady Pirates win twice
The Prairie Lady Pirates split a pair of league game as they lost at Lapwai 44-60 on Thursday, Jan. 21 then bounced back to win 58-28 at Cottonwood over Genesee on Saturday, Jan. 23.
Also on Monday, Jan. 25 the JV team added a game against Kamiah and pulled out a 50-46 win.
The game at Lapwai was similar to the game played at Cottonwood in that Prairie stayed close and even held a lead in the fourth quarter only to see Lapwai pull away at the end.
Lapwai scored first in the game and led 2-5 before Prairie took their first lead on a basket each by Tara Schlader and Delanie Lockett.
Lapwai tied it with a free throw but a drive to the hoop by Madison Shears and a free throw by Ellea Uhlenkott gave prairie a 9-6 lead.
After a Lapwai basket Schlader scored for an 11-8 lead. Lapwai took back the lead with a pair of 3-pointers against a basket by Uhlenkott but Prairie tied it at 14 to end the first quarter when Shears made a free throw.
Lapwai opened the second quarter with a 3-pointer and after 2 free throws in 4 attempts by Lockett, went on a 0-7 run to take a 16-24 lead.
Lockett broke the run with a full court drive for a lay-up. Shears sank2 free throws and Kristin Wemhoff took the ball full court for a lay-up to cut the deficit to 2 at 22-24.
Lapwai answered with a free throw then a Lapwai assistant coach got assessed a technical foul. Shears made both free throws and on the ensuing Prairie possession Wemhoff scored to give Prairie a 26-25 lead with 52 seconds left in the half. Shears added a free throw to make it 27-25 at the break.
Lockett opened the third quarter with a 3-pointer for a 5 point lead but Lapwai answered with 6 straight points to retake the lead at 30-31 with 3:45 left in the third.
Schlader scored on an inbounds play to give Prairie back the lead and a basket each by Wemhoff and Schlader and 2 free throws by Lockett gave Prairie a 7 point lead at 38-31 with 1:00 left in the third.
Lapwai scored 2 baskets to pull within 3 by the end of the period, 38-35.
Lapwai then scored to open the fourth to pull within 1. A free throw by Lockett put Prairie up by 2 but Lapwai answered with a 3 pointer to retake the lead.
Prairie took it right back when Hope Schwartz scored 2 free throws with 5:04 left. That lead lasted 12 seconds until Lapwai scored a basket.
Schlader then fouled out and Lapwai scored the 2 ensuing free throws.
Wemhoff sank the first of 2 free throws but then things fell apart for the Pirates as Lapwai scored 6 straight points to take an 8 point lead with 3:16 left.
Shears sank two free throws with 2:41 left but Lapwai answered with a 0-10 run to end the game fueled by several Prairie turnovers.
Lockett wound up with 14 points to lead Prairie in scoring with Shears scoring 10. Schlader scored 8 with Wemhoff and Uhlenkott adding 5 each and Schwartz 2.
Prairie had a 42-31 edge on the boards led by Lockett, who had a double-double with 14 rebounds.
Shears had 3 steals and 4 assists.
Prairie was 13 for 41 from the field, 32%, and 17 for 31 at the line, 55%. Lapwai was 22 for 60 from the field, 37%, and 9 for 13 at the line, 69%.
In the JV game Prairie dug themselves to  big of a hole to start the game and wound up losing 34-38.
Prairie went scoreless in the first quarter as Lapwai built a 0-18 lead.
Prairie finally scored when Ali Rehder stole the ball and scored at the 6:52 mark of the second quarter.
Prairie wound up outscoring Lapwai 11-3 in the second quarter to start their climb back into the game.
Isabella Walsh sank a 3-pointer and Rehder scored 2 free throws and another steal for a la-up as Prairie started the quarter with a 9-0 run.
After a Lapwai basket Rehder made 2 more free throws and Lapwai answered with a free throw to make it 11-21 at the half.
Lapwai scored to open the third quarter but Prairie then went on a 10-2 run to pull within 4 points at 21-25.
Jade Prigge scored 6 of those 10 and Riley Enneking scored the other 4.
Lapwai broke that run with a 3 but Enneking added a basket to make it 23-28 at the end of the third quarter.
A putback by Walsh cut the deficit to 3 but Lapwai answered with 5 straight points.
Two baskets by Rehder cut the lead back down to 4 at 29-33.
After a Lapwai basket, Prairie again got within 3 on a basket by Rehder and a free throw by Walsh.
A Lapwai free throw was answered by a basket from Prigge that got Prairie within 2 at 34-36 with 7 seconds to play.
Prairie fouled a Lapwai player in hopes she would miss but she made both free throws and Lapwai wound up winning by 4.
Rehder scored 14 to lead the JVs with Prigge scoring 8 and Enneking and Walsh 6 each.
Prairie had a 43-39 edge on the boards led by Prigge with 12 and Enneking with 10.
Enneking had 7 steals and 3 assists while Rehder had 6 steals.
Prairie was 14 for 56 from the field, 25%, and 5 for 8 at the line, 63%. Lapwai was 15 for 49 from the field, 31%, and 6 for 16 at the line, 38%.

With the win over Genesee on Saturday, Prairie all but clinched the #2 seed into the District Tournament with just 2 league games left to play.
Genesee scored the first basket of the game but that was the only time they led and that was for just 18 seconds as Schlader tied the score with a putback and then scored another one to give Prairie their first lead.
Genesee tied it with a basket then Uhlenkott drove to the hoop to give Prairie the lead for good.
After a Genesee free throw, Prairie finished the first quarter with a 12-3 run made up of a 5-0 run, a Genesee 3-pointer and a 7-0 run. The first part saw Lockett and Wemhoff each score a basket and Shears a free throw. The second run saw Lockett sink a 3-pointer and Wemhoff add 2 baskets for an 18-8 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Genesee scored to open the second quarter but 2 baskets by Wemhoff and a putback by Schlader stretched the lead to 24-10.
Genesee scored a basket but Uhlenkott answered. After a Genesee free throw, Lockett ended the first half scoring with a 3-pointer for a 29-13 lead.
Each team scored 11 points in the third quarter as Prairie maintained their 16 point lead at 40-24 heading into the fourth quarter.
3 times Genesee cut the deficit to 13 in the quarter but each time Prairie answered as Wemhoff scored 4 points and Lockett, Shears and Laney Forsmann scored 2 each with Schlader adding the other point.
The last time Genesee had it down to 13 was at 37-24 with Lockett scoring a basket and Schlader a free throw to end the quarter.
Prairie then scored the first 16 points of the fourth quarter to turn a sizable lead into a blowout.
Lockett got it started with a 3-point play. Molly Johnson, in her first action since suffering a concussion in the first Kamiah game, made 2 free throws. Wemhoff scored a free theow. Forsmann scored a lay-up. Schwartz hit a 3-pointer. Shears stole the ball and made a lay-up and Schwartz hit another 3 to make it 56-24 with 2:55 left and invoke the running clock.
Genesee scored their first points in 7 minutes when Bailey Leseman scored a 3-pointer. Schwartz then scored a putback to make it 58-27 and a free throw by Genesee was the final point of the game.
Wemhoff had a double-double with 15 points to lead the Pirates plus 11 rebounds. Lockett scored 13 with Schwartz scoring 8, Schlader 7, Shears 5, Uhlenkott and Forsmann 4 each and Johnson 2.
Schlader had 16 rebounds to lead Prairie to a 49-34 domination of the boards.
Shears had 5 steals and 3 assists while Forsmann had 3 steals and 4 assists. Uhlenkott also had 3 steals.
Prairie was 24 for 59 from the field, 41%, and 6 of 21 at the line, 28%. Genesee was 14 for 44 from the field, 32%, and 3 for 9 at the line, 33%.
Prairie is now 14-2 on the season and 10-2 in league play.
The JV team rolled to a 61-24 win.
Genesee managed to lead twice, at 1-2 and 4-5.
Prigge scored with 4:25 left in the first quarter to put Prairie up for good. That kicked off an 8-0 run as Enneking, Olivia Klapprich and Walsh each added a basket.
After a Genesee basket, Rehder, Sarah Lustig and Rehder again scored to give Prairie an 18-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Prairie also outscored Genesee 18-7 in the second quarter for a 36-14 halftime lead.
Prigge started things with a 3-point play. After a Genesee score, Prairie got baskets from Taylor Riener, Alli Geis and Riener again for a 27-9 lead.
After a Genesee free throw, Rehder and Prigge each scored to make it 31-10.
Walsh added a free throw and Prigge and Enneking each a basket against a Genesee basket and 2 free throws to close out the half.
Walsh opened the second half with 3 of 4 at the line and Prigge added a basket for a 41-14 lead.
The two teams traded scoring through the rest of the quarter with Riener’s basket on an inbounds play with 20 seconds left giving Prairie a 51-21 lead at the end of the third quarter.
With the running clock invoked, Prairie still outscored Genesee 10-3 in the final frame to win by 37.
Prigge scored 15 points to lead the Pirates. Enneking scored 9 with Walsh and Riener adding 8 each. Rehder scored 7, Klapprich 6, Geis 4 and Lustig and Chloe Rowland 2 each.
Prairie had a 39-29 advantage on the boards with Klapprich, Prigge and Walsh each collecting 7 rebounds.
Rehder had 8 steals while Prigge and Klapprich each had 5. Rehder and Klapprich each had 5 assists with Prigge adding 4 and Walsh and Enneking 3 each.
Prairie was 27 for 59 from the field, 46%, and 7 for 16 at the line, 44%. Genesee was 6 for 35 from the field, 17%, and 11 for 16 at the line, 69%.

To make up for lack of games for both teams due to some league schools not having JV teams, Prairie and Kamiah got together Monday for an extra game.
Kamiah’s JV team had beaten Prairie 2 weeks ago and Prairie was looking for some payback.
The game was back and forth in the first quarter until Prairie put together an 8-0 run that turned a 9-8 lead into a 17-8 lead. Klapprich and Prigge each scored 4 points in that run.
Kamiah then scored to make it 17-10 as the quarter ended.
Klapprich had scored 9 and Prigge 8 in the quarter.
The second quarter saw Prairie’s offense go into hibernation as they scored just 2 points on a basket by Rowland at the 5:25 mark. Kamiah scored 10 in the quarter to take a 19-20 halftime lead with the go-ahead basket being a 3-pointer with 30 seconds left.
Kamiah opened the second half with a 3-pointer plus another basket to take a 19-25 lead but Prairie then broke their scoring drought as  Prigge and Enneking each scored a basket to cut the lead to 2 points.
Prairie still trailed until with 2:42 left in the quarter, Rehder hit a 3-pointer that put Prairie ahead 30-29.
Neither team scored the rest of the quarter and that’s where it stood entering the fourth.
The teams traded the league 4 times early in the fourth quarter until Prairie put together a 6-0 run to turn a 36-all tie into a 42-36 lead. Rehder had 2 free throws and a basket and Prigge also had a basket.
Kamiah came back though with a 2-10 run as they took back the lead at 44-46 with 1:42 to play. Consecutive 3-pointers turned a 40-44 deficit into the lead.
With 1:28 left Enneking tied it with a lay-up and with 33 seconds left Prigge rebounded a miss by Rehder and put it back for the go-ahead basket.
Rehder added 2 free throws with 17 seconds left for the final points of the game.
Prigge wound up with 16 points to lead the scoring. Rehder added 11, Klapprich 9, Enneking 6, Geis 4 and Molly Johnson 2.
Johnson was getting some game time to shake off the rust from having had to sit out since suffering a concussion in the December game against Kamiah.
Johnson and Prigge each had 10 rebounds to lead Prairie to a 37-33 edge on the boards.
Klapprich had 7 steals and Johnson and Enneking each had 4 assists.
Prairie was 21 for 57 from the field, 38%, and 7 for 12 at the line, 58%. Kamiah was 16 for 46 from the field, 35%, and 7 for 14 at the line, 50%.
