Elementary students participate in service projects
Prairie Elementary Students participated in two service projects in the month of January and February.
The first service project was a school wide effort. The student council headed up a “Love Thy Neighbor” fundraiser for the Heifer International Project. For more than 75 years, Heifer International has worked with people all around the world to end hunger, poverty and care for the Earth. Heifer International generally provides animals and education to participating families through local channels in the countries they serve. Heifer International was born from the simple idea of empowerment, the organization has worked tirelessly to give families a hand up, rather than just a handout. They provide services in 21 countries including the United States.
The students and staff at Prairie Elementary gathered loose coins and bills, which raised $980.00!  The student council purchased the following: 4 flocks of ducklings, 4 flocks of chicks, 4 sets of hives and bees, 1 goat, 1 set of piglets. They also purchased 4 hope baskets (rabbits, and chicks), and 2 dream baskets (sheep, heifer, goat, rabbits and chicks).
The second service project involved the 5th and 6th graders. These students made 110 paper woven heart pockets and filled them with delicious chocolates and candies. The heart pockets were then distributed to the entire staff members at both St, Mary’s Hospital and clinic. The students wrote personal notes to tell staff members how much they appreciate them and everything they do for our community. The students also made woven hearts for the school bus drivers, office and kitchen staff, Jake Forsmann and Dave Shears. One even went to our milk deliveryman Dan!
Every student and staff member joined in celebrating February, a month of gratitude, appreciation and loving thy neighbor.
