Patriots lose to Highland at District
The St. John Bosco Patriots finished their season with a 51-88 loss to Highland at Craigmont in a loser-out opening game at District Friday, Feb. 19.
The Patriots kept relatively close contact to the Huskies through the first 3 quarters before getting blown out in the fourth quarter.
Clay Weckman scored on a putback to give the Patriots their only lead of the game at 2-0. Highland then scored 10 straight points to take the lead.
The Patriots rallied back the rest of the opening quarter with Cody Wassmuth sinking a 3-pointer in the final seconds to cut the deficit to just 2 at 12-14. Weckman had scored 7 and Wassmuth 5 for the Patriots in the quarter.
Highland opened the second quarter with 7 straight points before Dustin Kaschmitter scored a putback at the 5:40 mark for the Patriots.
Highland built on their lead as they took a 22-35 lead at the half, outscoring SJB 10-21 in the second quarter. Clay Weckman scored 4 points in the quarter while Luke Stubbers, Cody Wassmuth and Kaschmitter scored 2 each.
Highland scored the first 4 points of the third quarter then Bosco came back with 6 straight on a 3 by Cody Wassmuth and a 3-point play by Torry Chmelik.
The Patriots twice got the deficit down to 7 points at 36-43 after a putback by Kaschmitter and 41-48 after a 3 by Chmelik.
By the end of the quarter though Highland had pushed the lead back to 12 at 45-57.
In the fourth quarter things fell completely apart for the Patriots. It started out with Highland outscoring the Patriots just 3-5 as a free throw each by Clay and Wyatt Weckman made it 48-62 with 6:51 left to play. Over the rest of the game though Highland outscored the Patriots 3-26.
Turnovers against a full-court press, missed shots with Highland rebounding, everything turned into points by the Huskies. It didn’t slow down any when Highland emptied their bench. It seemed like every shot Highland attempted went in.
A basket by Kaschmitter and a free throw by Stallone Hoene were the only points by the Patriots in the final 6 minutes of the game.
Clay Weckman led the Patriots in scoring with 15 points while Cody Wassmuth was also in double figures with 11. Chmelik scored 9, Kaschmitter 8, Like Stubbers 4, Levi Wassmuth 2 and Wyatt Weckman and Hoene 1 each.
SJB had a 49-48 edge on the boards with Kaschmitter grabbing 11 for the Patriots while Levi Wassmuth added 10 and Clay Weckman 8.
Clay Weckman had 3 steals and Chmelik had 2 assists.
The Patriots were 19 for 71 from the field, 27%, and 9 for 24 at the line, 38%. Highland was 35 for 66 from the field, 53%, and 17 for 26 at the line, 65%.
The Patriots end their season with a 3-11 record.
