Lady Pirates win 2 of 5, finish tied for second in league
The Prairie Lady Pirates closed out their regular season with 5 games in 4 days, winning 2 of them.
On Tuesday, May 4, they split a doubleheader at Genesee, losing the first game 6-11 then coming back to win 24-4. On Thursday, May 6, they won at Kamiah over CV/Kamiah 12-6. Finally on Friday, May 7, they traveled to Potlatch and lost both ends of a doubleheader 3-16 and 8-10.
That gives them the third seed into District and forced them to play a loser-out game against Lapwai on Tuesday, May 11 at Cottonwood. If they won that they would play Kendrick at 3 p.m. Thursday, May 13 at Genesee. Win or lose they would play again at 5 p.m. They need to win at least one game on Thursday to advance to state.
Genesee scored first in the opening game but Prairie came back with 3 in the bottom of the first to take the lead.
Genesee tied it in the second inning but Prairie took back the lead with a run in the bottom of the third.
A 5-run fourth inning plus 3 more in the fifth tilted the game Genesee’s way.
The game ended after 6 innings due to the time limit.
Prairie was limited to 6 hits. Mackenzie Key had half of them with 2 doubles and a single. Tara Schlader, Eve Uhlenkott and Riley Enneking each had a single.
Key pitched for Prairie and gave up 14 hits and 11 runs.
In the second game Prairie was the visiting team and scored 3 runs in the first and never looked back. They added 2 in the third and 11 in the fourth for a 16-0 lead.
Genesee scored 2 in the bottom of the fourth to extend the game but Prairie added 8 more in the fifth and when Genesee could answer with only 2 the game ended on the 10-run mercy rule.
Key had better results pitching in the second game as she gave up just 5 hits and 4 runs.
Prairie pounded out 10 hits led by Madison Shears and Key who each had 3 hits. Shears had 2 doubles and a single while Key had a double and 2 singles. Eve Uhlenkott had 2 singles, Josie Remacle had a homer and Schlader had a single.

The Lady Pirates gave up just 2 hits but 8 runs as they defeated Kamiah/CV 12-8.
Shears and Key each doubled twice and got 2 RBI each for the offense. Ember Martin also got a hit and 2 RBI.
Prairie scored in every inning and needed every run to hold off their opponents.
Tara Schlader pitched for Prairie and gave up a bunch of free passes despite holding Kamiah/CV to just the aforementioned 2 hits. 3 Prairie errors also figured into the scoring.
Prairie took the lead with 3 runs in the first but gave up 2 in the bottom of the inning. They added 1 in the second and 2 in the third for a 6-2 lead.
They gave up 1 in the bottom of the third but answered back with 1 in the fourth, and 2 in the fifth for a 9-3 lead.
Kamiah/CV scored 1 in the bottom of the fifth to make it 9-4.
Prairie added 1 in the sixth to make it 10-4 but C.V. made it a close game with 4 in the bottom of the sixth.
Prairie added 2 in the seventh to make it 12-8 and then held Kamiah/CV scoreless in the bottom of the seventh to hold on for the win.
Prairie had 8 hits in the game led by Shears and Key. Eve Uhlenkott also had 2 singles while Schlader and Martin each had a single.

After a 2 hour bus ride and cold, windy conditions when they got there, apparently Prairie wasn’t quite ready to play in the first game at Potlatch as the Loggers put 9 runs on the board in the top of the first.
Key could only get 1 out and struggled with her command as she gave up 5 walks and got only 1 out. Schlader came on to get the Pirates out of the inning, striking out the first two batters she faced.
Prairie looked to get right back in the game as their first 3 batters all reached base. Shears on a walk, Key on a catcher’s obstruction and Eve Uhlenkott on a hit by pitch. Shears scored the only run though on a wild pitch as Potlatch’s pitcher struck out the next 3 hitters.
Schlader set the side down in order in the second inning and Prairie came back with 2 runs to pull within 6.
Laney Forsmann got Prairie’s first hit of the game and Ember Martin followed with a walk. A 2-out single by Key scored Forsmann and Martin then scored on a wild pitch.
Potlatch got to Schlader for 3 runs in the third on a walk, single and home run.
Prairie was able to get just 1 more hit the rest of the way, a single by Uhlenkott in the fourth. A walk, 2 hit batters and an error accounted for their only other baserunners.
Potlatch added 4 more runs in the fifth as 2 walks and triple and a single plus an error accounted for the runs.
Forsmann, Key and Uhlenkott each had a single for Prairie’s only hits.
The second game was a different story as Prairie took the lead in the top of the first and held it until Potlatch rallied in the bottom of the fifth.
Shears led off the game with a triple to the gap in left center. Key walked and Shears scored on a groundout by Uhlenkott. Key scored on a single to left by Remacle. Schlader walked then Enneking singled to right, scoring Remacle to make it 3-0.
Key was back in the circle for the second game and had much better results. She gave up a walk but got out of the first inning unscathed this time.
Prairie added 2 more runs in the second as Shears reached on an error and Key followed with a single up the middle. Shears wound up scoring as the ball got away from the outfielder with Key winding up at second. A groundout by Uhlenkott moved Key to third and she scored on a passed ball to make it 5-0.
Potlatch got on the board with 3 runs in the second on an error, single and 2 walks to cut the lead to 5-3.
Prairie answered back with 3 in the top of the third. Forsmann was hit by a pitch leading off and moved to second on a groundout by Martin. Shears doubled to left to score Forsmann and Shears scored on a single by Key. Key went to second on an error by the leftfielder. She moved to third on a single by Uhlenkott and scored on a wild pitch to put Prairie up 8-3.
Key gave up 3 singles in the fourth as Potlatch cut the lead to 8-4.
Prairie was unable to score in the fourth or the fifth despite putting several runners on base as they left 2 runners on base in each inning.
In the bottom of the fifth Key got a fly ball out and after a single, a ground ball out but never could get the final out of the inning.
With a runner on and 2 outs, Potlatch got a single, walk, walk, double, single and single as they scored 5 runs before the game was called on the time limit with Potlatch up 8-10.
Prairie had 7 hits in the game led by Shears who had a double and a triple with an RBI. Key and Enneking each had 2 singles and an RBI. Remacle and Uhlenkott each had a single and an RBI. Of note: Schlader walked all 4 times she went to the plate in the game.
Key pitch all 5 innings allowing 10 runs on 10 hits with 6 walks and no strikeouts.
Prairie ends the regular season with a 12-4 overall record, 8-4 in league which is tied for second with Kendrick. Kendrick had the tiebreaker to get the #2 seed and first round bye to District.
