Letters to the editor from this week's Chronicle

Redneck Review!
No. 338 – 10/24/21
Two topics somewhat in more depth, but still related to issues raised in past RNR’s. The first, to return to the series of letters written me by a friend I met over 50 years ago who somehow found his way on my weekly RNR email list, and who sent me the letters because of his experience in Vietnam, and his disgust with the press coverage of our recent pull out of Kabul, leaving the area back in the hands of the brutal Taliban. The second topic relates to the condition of our economy, the threat of explosive inflation among other problems, and a question of what an individual can do to protest oneself.
Back to Vietnam man! Readers of these last two RNR’s will recall the complaints found in the letters of this old friend, who described what actually happened on the ground and in the field where he was, and the press releases that hit the U.S. news somewhat later, totally distorting the actual events, and to quote, “for the sake of sensationalism, ‘the hell with the truth’…and in so doing ruined the lives of many young soldiers away from family who were taught we were all dope addicts and baby killers.” Described also in the last article was the humane burial of rotting and decaying enemy troops that were left to the buzzards by their comrades. Our soldiers, including the writer of the account in the letter to me, described how our soldiers dug a mass grave, then towed the rotting bodies to the site, where they were buried. Later, and I quote again that letter: “Later one of our soldiers got a letter from his family with photos of the event, with the heading “American soldiers burying tortured prisoners in Vietnam.’ His family suggested that if he were part of this act of torture, he need not come home.”
In days to come, more of the distortions of the actual events that happened in Vietnam will be found here, but in the meantime, a reader might wonder, “Just who is this Vietnam friend?” Following is a bit of insight into the frustrations he felt when he read the recent news about the quick and ridiculous pull out of Kabul in Afghanistan, abandoning not only many of our own citizens, billions of dollars worth of our military equipment, but thousands of local citizens who had become dependent on our help for their protection from the brutal Taliban. (And for those who have forgotten what the same group did a few years ago, reread RNR 336 which was a repeated 2015 article describing the public beheadings and the mass killings of Christians which was making the news at that time!)
Following another direct quote from my friend’s letters. “…I served two and one half years in that country, and while my life was anything but enjoyable, with a question of the life expectancy factor, I can relate to you the tremendous change of life that Vietnamese began to enjoy. You never hear this from the media who began an anti-war campaign that actually cost us, not just the war, but the lives of many of my comrades…as well as the natives there themselves. They again had to give half of their crops to the Taliban or be executed if they failed to do so…children were no longer able to go to school, the women fell back into the brutal subclass of their captors, and citizens were not able to freely use the roads we had rebuilt and paved for them.” (Many more details, but more only in the future.)
Topic #2: Inflation or no serious inflation? We head from our Federal Reserve chairman, that the near 5% inflation being admitted today, “is probably only temporary,” due to backlogs in supplies, etc., et. But folks, it is not! Readers old enough to remember the Jimmy Carter days know that the inflation rate at one time during his administration hit 20%, and gas lines extended for blocks, and gas was available only on alternate days! IT IS COMING AGAIN, mark my words and the words of experts! It is already an admitted fact that the dollar today is worth less than a dime of 70 years ago, and falling further as we speak. Experts by the dozens agree that easy money, and huge debt will inevitably drive prices up and UP, until people will begin to notice when they find “a loaf of bread costing $15” like was quoted here in an article some time ago! So one might ask again, what can a person do to keep up with that inflation? Well, in RNR 330, we quoted at length economist Peter Krauth who claimed that silver would need to be nearly $1900 an ounce, IF IT WOULD CATCH UP with the inflated prices of every thing else in the last 40 years. At the time of the quotation, spot silver was around $22/oz.! But over $50 twice in the past! (Call 208-962-3576 for info on safe and secure dealers of silver of gold! 60 years experience here!)
