Lady Pirates win season opener
The Prairie Lady Pirates struggled in the second quarter but pulled away from Troy in the second half for a 58-31 win at Cottonwood Thursday, Nov. 18. Kristin Wemhoff passes over a Troy defender to Molly Johnson.
Tara Schlader scored the first points of the game on an inbounds feed from Kristin Wemhoff. However, by the time Prairie scored again, Schlader was on the bench for the rest of the half with 3 fouls.
Wemhoff made it 4-0 with a pair of free throws.
After a Troy 3-pointer, Prairie scored 8 of the next 9 points for a 12-4 lead. Molly Johnson scored a putback, Josie Remacle scored a free throw and Ali Rehder scored inside to make it 9-3. After a free throw by Troy, Delanie Lockett converted a 3-point play to make it 12-4 with 1:58 left in the first quarter.
Troy cut the margin to 5 by the end of the period on 2 free throws and a putback against a single free throw by Wemhoff.
In the second quarter, Troy’s Isabelle Raasch got hot. She had hit the 3-pointer to get Troy’s scoring started but scored Troy’s first 9 points of the second quarter as the Trojans tied the score at 17-17 with 4:30 left in the half.
A free throw by Wemhoff and then a feed by her to Laney Forsmann for a lay-up made it 20-17.
2 free throws by Troy were answered by a jumper from the elbow by Wemhoff.
Raasch then tied it at 22 with her third 3-pointer of the game.
Each side scored a free throw as it was tied again at 23-23. With 33 seconds left in the half, Johnson took a pass from Lockett and was fouled while scoring a lay-up. She added the free throw to give Prairie a 26-23 lead at the half.
Troy scored to open the second half and cut the lead to 1, but the rest of the third quarter belonged to the Pirates. Prairie scored 17 straight points to take a commanding 43-25 lead with 2:30 left in the third quarter.
Forsmann started the run with a 3-pointer. Wemhoff then pulled down a defensive rebound and drove the length of the court for a lay-up. Forsmann scored inside on a feed from Schlader, who picked up her fourth foul shortly afterward.
Remacle came in for Schlader and scored a pair of baskets. Wemhoff, Lockett and Johnson each added a basket to make it 43-25.
On the defensive end during that run, Prairie was forcing numerous Troy turnovers as the Trojans had 13 in the third quarter alone. They also put the clamps on Raasch, who went scoreless in the second half and attempted just 2 shots.
Troy broke their scoring drought at the 2:24 mark then Prairie scored the final 4 points of the quarter on a basket each by Lockett and Schlader for a 47-27 lead heading into the fourth. Prairie had outscored Troy 21-4 in the quarter.
Prairie scored the first 4 points of the fourth quarter on a basket by Wemhoff and 2 free throws by Remacle for a 51-27 lead. Troy scored a free throw then Prairie scored the next 5 points. Rehder scored a basket and Wemhoff, Gracie Farr and Riley Enneking each added a free throw to make it 56-28 with 1:27 to play.
Troy scored the next 3 points then Prairie finished off the scoring with a basket by Isabella Walsh on a feed from Enneking.
Wemhoff wound up with 16 points to lead all scorers and added 7 rebounds, 7 assists and 4 steals. Remacle came off the bench to score 9 points and added 6 rebounds and 3 steals. Lockett, Johnson and Forsmann each scored 7 points. Schlader and Rehder scored 4 each. Walsh scored 2 and Farr and Enneking scored 1 each.
Raasch led Troy with 15 points, all in the first half. No one else had more than 5 points.
Prairie outrebounded Troy 36-32. Forsmann tied Wemhoff for the team lead with 7 rebounds.
Out of 22 made baskets, Prairie had 17 assists, showing they did a great job of moving the ball.
Prairie was 22 for 48 from the field, 46%, and 13 for 30 at the line, 43%. Troy was 9 for 33 from the field, 27%, and 10 for 20 from the line, 50%. Troy hit just 3 of 16 shots from the field in the second half.
Prairie is now 1-0 on the season and in league play.
The JV game was only 2 quarters but was similar to the varsity game in that Troy kept in close in the first half of the game and then Prairie pulled away for a 33-19 win.
Unlike the varsity game, where Prairie never trailed, Troy scored first in the JV game. Isabella Walsh tied it at 2 then Troy took back the lead with a free throw. Walsh scored again but Troy answered for what turned out to be their final lead.
Lexi Schumacher scored a pair of baskets for an 8-5 lead. After Troy cut the lead to 1, Taylor Riener scored on a drive for a 3-point lead. Alli Geis scored on an inbounds play then Walsh stole the ensuing inbounds pass by Troy and scored to make it 14-7.
Troy scored the next 4 points to cut the lead to 3. Schumacher and Geis each scored then Troy hit a 3 and then a 2 to pull within 2 by the end of the quarter, 18-16.
The quarter break cost Troy any momentum they may have had through as Prairie scored the first 11 points of the second quarter to take control of the game.
Geis scored 2 baskets and Sarah Lustig and Schumacher each made 2 free throws to make it 26-16. Lustig, Walsch and Lustig again each hit 1 of 2 free throws to make it 29-16.
Troy finally scored in the quarter with 2 free throws with just 2:21 left to play. Schumacher answered with 2 free throws. Troy scored another free throw then Riley Enneking ended the scoring with a basket with 5 seconds left to make it 33-19.
Schumacher scored 10 points to lead the scoring. Geis scored 8, Walsh 7, Lustig 4 and Reiener and Enneking 2 each.
Prairie dominated the boards 20-13 with Walsh grabbing 7 boards while Ellie Nuxoll came in late and pulled down 5 rebounds. Geis and Lustig had 4 rebounds each.
Walsh had 3 steals and 5 rebounds.
The JV’s were 12 for 31 from the field, 39%, and 9 for 19 at the line, 47%. Troy was 7 for 15 from the field, 47%, and 4 for 16 at the line, 25%.
