The Prairie Lady Pirates knocked off league leading Lapwai for the first time since 2018, 55-47 on Saturday, Jan. 22 at Cottonwood. They also defeated Genesee 66-37 on Friday, Jan. 21 at Genesee.
A game scheduled against Orofino on Wednesday, Jan. 19, that had been rescheduled from Jan. 6, was cancelled due to COVID protocols at Orofino. It will not be made up.
In the game at Genesee Prairie jumped out to a 21-2 lead by the end of the first quarter.
Genesee outscored them in the second quarter, but only by 2 points as Prairie led 37-20 at the half.
Prairie blitzed Genesee in the third quarter, outscoring them 24-7 to take a 61-27 lead into the fourth quarter. The final period was played with a running clock.
Prairie had 4 scorers in double figures led by Delanie Lockett with 18 points. Kristin Wemhoff added 17, Laney Forsmann scored 13 and Tara Schlader scored 10. Also scoring were Ali Rehder and Josie Remacle with 4 points each.
Lockett had 10 rebounds to lead the team. Wemhoff had 8 steals and 7 assists.
Prairie also won the JV game 62-26.

For the first time since Dec. 11, 2018 and after 11 straight losses, the Prairie Lady Pirates were able to beat Lapwai.
It didn’t start well as Lapwai started the scoring with a 3-pointer and then a basket for a 0-5 lead. Prairie however came back with 8 straight points to take their first lead.
Remacle started the scoring on a feed from Lockett. Wemhoff then scored consecutive baskets to put Prairie ahead 6-5. A free throw each by Schlader and Wemhoff made it 8-5. Lapwai then scored out the first quarter with a 3-pointer to tie the game.
Prairie took back the lead on a lay-up by Schlader and amazingly enough in a Lapwai game, never trailed again.
Forsmann scored to make it 12-10 and after a Lapwai basket, Wemhoff converted a 3-point play and Schlader added a free throw to make it 16-10.
After a Lapwai free throw Schlader hit a shot from the elbow and then scored a putback. A driving lay-up by Wemhoff gave Prairie a double-digit lead at 22-11.
Lapwai came back with 5 straight points but Lockett broke that run with a 3-pointer on a feed from Olivia Klapprich. Schlader then made 2 free throws to push the lead back to 11 at 27-16.
Two baskets by Lapwai cut the lead to 7 but a steal by Klapprich of an inbounds pass by Lapwai led to a lay-up by Rehder at the buzzer for a 29-20 halftime lead.
Schlader sank 2 free throws to start the second half but Lapwai came back with 5 straight points to pull within 6. After a free throw by Schlader, Lapwai scored a free throw and a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 3 at 32-29 with 2:55 left in the third quarter.
Prairie answered with 2 free throws and then a basket by Forsmann to lead by 7 at 36-29.
A Lapwai free throw was answered by 2 free throws by Lockett.
Two Lapwai baskets cut the lead to 4 but Forsmann closed out the third quarter with 2 free throws for a 40-34 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
All 3 times the two teams played last as well as the first time this season, Prairie held a fourth quarter lead only to lose the game. It looked like that might happen again when Lapwai scored the first 4 points of the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 40-38.
Prairie answered with a 7-2 run to push the lead to 7 points. Wemhoff made a free throw to make it 41-38. Remacle then became the first of 5 players who would foul out of the game with 5:46 to play on an offensive foul.
Lapwai didn’t score and Forsmann scored on an anibounds play for a 43-38 lead.
Lapwai answered with a basket to pull within 3 against but Schlader answered with a putback.
A half minute later, Schlader became the second player to foul out as she got called for a charging foul.
Again Lapwai didn’t score with Forsmann pulling down the defensive rebound. That led to Lockett making the first of 2 free throws. Lapwai’s Lauren Gould fouled out with Forsmann making the second of 2 free throws with Prairie in the double bonus. That made it 47-40 with 3:05 to play.
Lapwai came back with a 3-pointer and a free throw to again cut the lead to 3 with 1:34 to play. Rehder made a free throw with 1:09 left after making a steal. Forsmann rebounded Rehder’s missed second free throw and was fouled by Sobotta who picked up her fifth foul. Forsmann made both free throws  for a 50-44 lead.
Lapwai scored a free throw but Wemhoff answered with a free throw and then Lockett grabbed a defensive rebound that led to a basket by Wemhoff for a 53-45 lead with 30 seconds left.
Forsmann fouled out with 26 seconds left and Lapwai made both free throws but still trailed 53-47.
With 7 seconds left Wemhoff scored the game’s final 2 points at the free throw line for the final 8-point margin.
Prairie had 3 players achieve double-doubles in the game. Wemhoff scored 16 points with 10 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 assists. Schlader had 15 points, 14 rebounds and 2 steals. Forsmann had 13 points and 12 rebounds and got several of her rebounds after Schlader fouled out.
Lockett scored 6 points, Rehder 3 and Remacle 2.
Prairie outrebounded the Wildcats 54-34.
Prairie was 16 for 47 from the field, 34%, and 24 for 39 at the line, 62%.  The free throw shooting was possibly Prairie’s best performance of the year.  They were 15 for 20, 75%, through 3 quarters and just 9 for 19 in the fourth but it was enough to hold on. Lapwai was 15 for 57 from the field, 26%, and 12 for 23 at the line, 52%.
Lapwai was called for 28 fouls while Prairie had 22.
Prairie is now 12-3 on the season and 11-1 in league play. They are basically tied for first with Lapwai with 1 league loss apiece. If they both win out in league games, Prairie would be the #1 seed at District due to the tiebreaker.
The JV team completed a season sweep of Lapwai without the game-ending drama of the first game as they won 64-44. They won on a buzzer-beater by 2 points at Lapwai earlier this season.
Prairie got the scoring started with a 3-pointer by Riley Enneking and Alli Geis and Lexi Schumacher each added a basket for a 7-0 lead.
Lapwai quickly cu the lead to 2 but a 3 by Schumacher and a free throw by Geis put them back up by 6. A 3-pointer and then a 2-pointer by Isabella Walsh led to a 16-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Lapwai got back within 5 in the second quarter then a 3 each by Walsh and Kaylie Lockett bracketing 2 free throws by Taylor Riener put Prairie up 26-13. Prairie wound up leading 34-22 at the half as Walsh scored 2 free throws and Geis, Riener and Schumacher each added a basket.
Lapwai scored first in the third quarter then Prairie scored 15 straight points to take a 49-24 lead. Enneking started it with 2 free throws. Schumacher, Walsh and Schumacher again each scored a lay-up after making a steal. Sarah Lustig scored a lay-up, Geis scored a putback and Schumacher finished the run by making all 3 free throws after getting fouled on a 3-point attempt.
Prairie led 53-30 after 2 quarters.
In the game at Lapwai, Prairie had a big lead only to see it melt away under Lapwai’s press. This time around Lapwai could only get the lead under 20 points once in the fourth quarter and that came with 14 seconds left. Lockett then scored the game’s final points for the 20-point margin.
Schumacher scored 22 to lead the JV’s in scoring. Walsh scored 12 and Enneking scored 10. Geis added 7, Reiner 6, Lockett 5 and Lustig 2.
The JV’s had a 48-42 edge on the boards led by Geis and Walsh who each had 10 with Enneking adding 9 rebounds.
Walsh had 7 steals and 8 assists.  Geis added 4 steals while Enneking and Schumacher had 3 each.
Prairie was 24 for 69 from the field, 35%, and 11 for 16 at the line, 69%. Lapwai was 16 for 57 from the field, 28%, and 5 for 9 at the line, 56%.
