Science Fair set for Thursday
St. John Bosco Academy students will host a science fair this Thursday, February 10th at 7pm.  Students in grades 3-12 completed science projects and invited the public to view their results at the school.  Stop by and learn about solar energy, lemon volcanoes, what the most important ingredients in cookies are and more!

Lady Patriots start District 1-1

The St. John Bosco Lady Patriots split their first two District Tournament games. They won 40-11 over Highland at Craigmont Friday, Feb. 4 to avoid being one and done and then lost at Kendrick 25-47 Saturday, Feb. 5.
They were to play at Nezperce Tuesday, Feb. 8 in a loser-out game. If they win that game they would play the championship game loser on Thursday, Feb. 10 for second place and a chance to advance to a state play-in game against the District 1 champion on Saturday.
Vs. Highland
Julia Wassmuth had a big scoring night in the game against Highland that was played at Craigmont due to the Patriots usual home gym being unavailable.
Wassmuth scored the Patriots first points but Highland answered with a 3-pointer by Hannah Miller for their only lead of the game.
Jade Prigge scored from the baseline off an inbounds feed from Dani Sonnen to put the Patriots on top for good. That kicked off a 13-0 run that carried into the second quarter.
Wassmuth scored a free throw then Prigge, Noelle Chmelik, Wassmuth and Sarah Waters each scored a basket to give SJB a 13-3 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Waters scored again to open the second quarter to make it 15-3.
After Highland scored, the Patriots scored the final 9 points of the first half and put together a 23-0 run that carried into the fourth quarter.
Two free throws by Prigge, a basket by Waters, a 3 by Wassmuth and then a steal and drive for a lay-up by Wassmuth made it 24-5 at the half.
The Patriots outscored Highland 12-0 in the third quarter with Wassmuth scoring 6 points, Dani Sonnen 4 and Prigge 2.
A basket by Waters midway through the fourth quarter made it 38-5.
Highland finally broke a 17 minute scoring drought with 3:21 to play.
After a basket by Raylie Warren made it 40-7, Highland scored the game’s final 4 points, all at the free throw line.
Wassmuth wound up with 16 points to lead all scorers. Waters and Prigge scored 8 each. Sonnen scored 4 and Warren and Chmelik 2 each.
Miller scored 7 of Highland’s 11 points.
The Patriots had a 38-28 edge on the boards led by Prigge and Dani Sonnen with 9 each. Warren added 8 rebounds.
Wassmuth and Waters each had 6 steals while Prigge had 5. Dani Sonnen had 3 assists.
The Patriots were 18 for 50 from the field, 36% and 3 for 8 at the line, 38%. Highland was 3 for 33 from the field, 9%, and 4 for 8 at the line, 50%.

At Kendrick
In the game at Kendrick, the Patriots led 2-0 on a basket by Warren then Kendrick scored 8 straight to take the lead for good and built on their lead throughout the game.
Bosco’s only other point of the first quarter came on a free throw by Warren as Kendrick’s defense forced 15 turnovers allowing the Tigers to take a 3-10 lead by the end of the opening period.
Kendrick scored the first 8 points of the second quarter to take a 3-18 lead. Prigge scored 2 free throws to break the dry spell.
The Patriots got a basket from Wassmuth and 2 free throws each from Dani Sonnen and Warren as they played almost even the rest of the quarter against Kendrick. Kendrick led 11-28 at the half.
Kendrick scored the first 4 points of the second half to take an 11-32 lead. The Patriots then put together a run where they outscored the Tigers 9-4. Wassmuth scored a free throw, Prigge 2 baskets and Chmelik and Warren a basket each as they cut the lead to 20-36.
Kendrick then made a pair of 3’s to end the third quarter and push their lead back to 22 at 20-42.
Scoring was even in the final quarter as each team scored just 1 basket and 3 free throws.
Prigge and Warren each scored 8 points to lead the Patriots. Wassmuth scored 4. Dani Sonnen and Chmelik scored 2 each and Waters scored 1.
Kendrick was led by Erin Morgan who had 19 points, 16 in the first half.
Kendrick had a 39-46 edge on the boards. Prigge had 14 rebounds to lead the Patriots.
Prigge also led in steals with 4 while Waters had 3. Waters had 3 assists to lead the team.
Bosco was 7 for 36 from the field, 19%, and 11 for 19 at the line, 58%. Kendrick was17 for 71 from the field, 24%, and 9 for 11 at the line, 82%.
The Patriots are now 5-10 on the season.

Patriots lose twice to Timberline
The St. John Bosco Patriots played a pair of make-up games against Timberline and lost them both. On Wednesday, Feb. 2, they traveled to Weippe and lost to the Spartans 33-49. On Monday, Feb. 7, the Spartans visited Cottonwood and Timberline won  46-51.
At Timberline
In the game at Timberline the Spartans scored first on a 3-pointer but Torry Chmelik answered with a 3 of his own to tie it.
The Spartans then scored 8 straight points to take a 3-11 lead.
A basket by Luke Stubbers and another 3 by Chmelik cut the deficit to 3. After a free throw by Timberline, Levi Wassmuth scored inside to make it 10-12 at the end of the first quarter.
Chmelik then gave the Patriots their first and unfortunately only lead of the game at 13-12 with his third 3-pointer.
Timberline answered with 5 straight points. A 3 by Cody Wassmuth cut the deficit to 1 at 16-17 but Timberline then scored the final 9 points of the half to take a 16-26 lead at the break.
The third quarter saw the two teams basically trade scores as Timberline outscored the Patriots 9-10 to take a 25-36 lead into the fourth quarter. Clay Weckman scored 4 in the quarter for the Patriots while Stubbers and Cody Wassmuth added 2 each and Chmelik scored 1.
Timberline scored 2 free throws to open the fourth quarter then the Patriots put together a rally.
Weckman scored 2 free throw and then stole the ball and scored a basket. Cody Wassmuth scored a pair of baskets to complete an 8-0 run that cut the deficit to 5 at 33-38 with 4:11 to play.
The Patriots then went ice-cold as they scored just 2 points the rest of the way on a basket by Cody Wassmuth with 15 seconds left.
Timberline meanwhile scored a basket and 2 free throws in the final 4 minutes as they mostly worked the clock.
Cody Wassmuth led the Patriots in scoring with 11 points while Chmelik added 10. Weckman scored 8, Stubbers 4 and Levi Wassmuth 2.
Timberline controlled the boards, 22-40. Levi Wassmuth led the Patriots with 7 rebounds.
Chmelik had 5 steals and 3 assists while Weckman had 3 steals and 3 assists. Levi and Cody Wassmuth each added 3 steals.
The Patriots were 13 for 50 from the field, 26%, and 3 for 10 at the line, 30%. Timberline was 15 for 31 from the field, 48%, and 8 for 13 at the line, 62%.

Vs. Timberline
In the home game against Timberline, the Spartans got off to a strong start and led 7-17 at the end of the first quarter and the Patriots fought from behind the rest of the way.
SJB was able to outscore Timberline in the second quarter 15-9 to cut the lead to 22-26 at the half.
Timberline added 3 points back to the lead in the third quarter as they led 33-40 after 3 quarters.
SJB was able to keep it close in the fourth but couldn’t overcome the deficit.
Chmelik led the Patriots in scoring with 14 points while Cody Wassmuth scored 10. Weckman and Stubbers scored 8 each and Levi Wassmuth scored 6.
The Patriots are 4-5 in league play with 1 game left against Highland, and 7-7 overall.
