Letters to the editor from this week's Chronicle

To the Editor,
Why in the world are people proposing to breach/bypass our dams? To save fish?
I dare our county, state and federal governments to try a simple experiment to PROVE whether or not dams hurt fish.
Pick a class 1 stream (one that spawns fish) and designate it a free-dam-zone. Let any property owner of land on that stream be able to freely design and build dams and spawning systems as desired in exchange for government access to the stream on their property for the purpose of sampling and counting fish. If an owner has no spawning fish found above his dam, he looses the right to that dam and the dam is removed but the owner can always try a new design that doesn’t harm fish.
What would happen if you did this?
Property owners would gladly invest in creating micro-hydro-electric dams on the stream with an eye to preserving and promoting fish numbers at the same time.
Hundreds of designs could be tried and explored in short order.
Owners would easily be able to power their own homes and distribute power to their neighbors either directly or via the grid way cheaper than solar or wind power.
Property values would likely explode.
Tax income would rise for that area.
And after about 5 years of doing this we will know if it is possible to actually increase fish numbers despite dozens or hundreds of dams on a stream.
If that works out, start opening up all our streams to private micro-hydro projects and watch the fish and wealth rise.

Redneck Review!

No. 371 - 6/5/22
One quick Completion comment, and then a Change of topics!
With the coming SCOTUS (Supreme Court of the United States) decision on the life or death of the 40 plus  year old Roe vs. Wade (an earlier Supreme Court decision  requiring that every state provide abortion services), it has been claimed in our last two RNR's  that the decision was totally out of sync with our Constitution, and with the religious convictions and beliefs of our Founding Fathers. It was further argued that the current power of American presidents is on a par with or even exceeds the power exerted by medieval kings like Henry VIII and George III, both of England.  This power of kings to have their own way was one of the big reasons early Englishmen made the perilous trip to the New World, to get the desired FREEDOM to live their own lives as they desired.
And today?  Again FREEDOM is under attack, as current presidents, using Executive Orders, simply make a command, and all of Americans are expected to obey, from wearing masks, to getting vaccinated, to stop oil and gas production, and to restrict gun ownership guaranteed by the 2nd Amendment. It was further argued that the  diagram   God-->People-->States-->National Government very accurately shows that the ultimate power of making important decisions goes back to the people, in this case, people who for the most part were believers in a Creator God, the Holy Bible, and the Christian Churches tracing their beginnings back to Jesus Christ. And to the states who created the national government, and still have the power to increase or decrease the powers given!  In other words, the STATES are the bosses in our system, reflecting the wishes of the people who live there!  So a decision to overturn Roe vs. Wade would simply return the legality to abort or not back to the states, and the people who control them. No big deal, as abortions could and would still go on in the states that allow them!
Time now for the "Completion comment" made above! In the June 3rd copy of the Lewiston Tribune, on page 1A, President Biden made the following comment about the horrendous mass slaying of students and teachers at Uvalde, Texas.  "For God's sake, how much more carnage are we willing to accept?"  He continued "How many more innocent lives must be taken before we say 'enough!' " President Biden, I agree with you 100%!  But, and this is indeed a really big  BUT!  How can we take your concern seriously when we documented in the last two RNR's that 63 million babes have been slain in the womb, or allowed to die, or even slain after an unsuccessful abortion, which computes to over 3500 every day since Roe vs Wade? We all know that you and your party are campaigning hard to continue abortions! Please explain!
So now, a "Change of topics" as promised above!
Repeatedly in early RNR's, it has been argued that a trend can be documented, showing that Americans overall are in a slow drift away from allegiance to a Creator God, and His historic son Jesus Christ and the religion He established. The new theory is that man is the one most in control, and that SOCIALISM is the wave of the future.  In economics, the theories of George Maynard Keynes definitely rules the world with claims that governments and national banks can control economies, preventing depressions by increased money supply, and low interest rates.
And what has been the result of this new thinking today! An unpayable national debt in excess of $30 trillion! An inflation rate of almost 10%, though fuel prices are up double even locally. An open border allowing millions of illegals, some bringing drugs and crime. Unpunished lawbreakers, bankrupt companies, hatred and violence definitely on the upswing!  What's next?
