Lady Pirates 1-2 at New Plymouth, sweep C.V.
The Prairie Lady Pirates started their season by competing at the New Plymouth Tournament Saturday, Aug. 27, then opened their league season with a home victory over Clearwater Valley Monday, Aug. 29, 25-19; 25-16, 25-11.
New Plymouth Tournament
Prairie struggled in pool play at the New Plymouth Tournament, getting swept in 2 games each by Filer and McCall-Donnelly, both 3A school. In the Consolation final they ran into another 3A school and pulled out a 5-set victory over Soda Springs.
Despite getting swept by both Filer and McCall, it was not like Prairie was dominated as they led in each game and lost 23-25 and 15-25 to Filer and then 19-25, 20-25 to McCall.
In the consolation final against Soda Springs the Pirates pulled out a 21-25, 25-22, 23-25, 25-20, 15-9 win.
Vs. Filer
In the opener against Filer, Prairie fell behind 2-4 then scored 4 straight for a 6-4 lead as Riley Enneking served 2 aces and Kristin Wemhoff and Julia Rehder each added a kill. Kristin Wemhoff makes a pass against Filer as Riley Enneking watches.
After giving up a sideout they extended the lead to 11-5 as Rehder served 4 straight aces.
Filer rallied back through and finally took the lead back at 17-18. Prairie was able to tie the score at 19 and again at 20 before falling by 3 points.
Filer scored first in the second game but Prairie rallied for a 4-3 lead on an ace by Tara Schlader and a kill by Rehder.
They led again at 7-6 but gave up 2 straight points. They tied the score a couple of times and took their final lead at 11-10 after a kill by Schlader.
Filer answered with 4 straight points and outscored Prairie 4-11 after that to clinch the best 2 out of 3 match.
Schlader had 10 kills including a block plus 2 assists and an ace in the match. Rehder had 6 kills, 1 assist and 4 aces. Taylor Riener had 4 kills and an assist. Enneking had 2 kills, 1 assist and 3 aces. Wemhoff had 2 kills and 2 assists. Lexi Schumacher had 1 kill and 13 assists. Alli Geis had 1 kill and 1 assist.
Vs. McCall-Donnelly
The first game against McCall-Donnelly was close early on but Prairie trailed for the most part but not by more than 4 points at 8-12.
At that point Schlader scored a kill and Schumacher was able to serve Prairie into the lead with 4 straight aces to make it 13-12.
That turned out to be Prairie’s only lead of the game as McCall scored 9 of the next 10 points to take and 14-21 lead and went on to win the game by 6.
In the second game Prairie led early on and after a sideout that made it 6-4, Enneking served Prairie to a 14-4 lead. She had 2 aces while Rehder had 3 kills and Geis scored a pair of blocks.
McCall scored a sideout kill to end the run then got back into the game with a 0-6 run before a kill by Rehder made it 15-10.
That was just a pause in the McCall rally though as they then scored the next 6 points to take a 15-16 lead.
A kill by Schlader and an ace by Geis put Prairie back on top at 17-16.
Prairie also led at 18-17 and 19-18 before McCall scored 6 straight to get to match point at 19-24.
A kill by Rehder held off the first match point but the match then ended on a net violation against the Pirates.
Rehder had 9 kills in the match. Schlader had 6 kills. Geis had 4 kills, including 2 blocks, plus an ace. Wemhoff had a pair of kills and an assist. Schumacher had a kill, 16 assists and 4 aces. Enneking had 3 aces and an assist.
Vs. Soda Springs
With the pool play losses, Prairie matched up against Soda Springs, which finished third in the other pool in a consolation match that was played best 3 out of 5.
Prairie jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening game and also led 5-2. Soda Springs rallied back to take a 7-9 lead.
Prairie took back the lead at 13-12. After Soda Springs tied it at 13 and again at 14, Prairie took the lead and held it until Soda Springs tied it at 18 and then took back the lead. Prairie tied it at 19 on a kill by Enneking but Soda Springs then scored 4 straight points to take control of the game as they eventually won by 4, 21-25.
Prairie took an early 7-3 lead in the second game then saw Soda Springs rally back for a 7-12 lead.
Prairie trailed by as many as 5 before rallying within 1 at 18-19 after 2 aces by Schlader.
After a sideoutRehder scored a kill and a kill by Geis tied it. An ace by Wemhoff gave Prairie a 21-20 lead.
Soda Springs scored twice for a 21-22 lead but then bricked a serve. With Enneking serving, Rehder scored a kill, Geis scored on a block and then scored the game-winning kill for Prairie’s first game win of the season, 25-22.
In the third game Prairie led 13-9 only to see Soda Springs rally back and take the lead at 16-17.
Prairie was able to keep it close but never reclaimed the lead as Soda Springs held on for a 23-25 win.
Trailing 1 game to 2, they jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the fourth game as Wemhoff served 2 aces.
Prairie held the lead until Soda Springs tied it at 11. The Pirates never let them take the lead though after Soda Springs tied it again at 12 and 14.
A bricked serve made it 15-14 and Rehder then served Prairie to a 19-14 lead with 2 aces and a kill each by Schlader and Geis.
Soda Springs got back within 2 at 20-18 but a kill by Schlader, an ace by Schumacher and a tip by Schlader made it 23-18. After a sideout by Soda Springs, Riener scored the sideout kill that got Prairie to game point at 24-19. Soda Springs fought off one game point then bricked a serve to hand Prairie the win at 25-20 and force a deciding game 5.
Wemhoff scored a kill to open the fifth game then scored another kill digging a Soda Springs spike. A kill by Schlader made it 3-0.
After a sideout, Enneking scored a kill and Schlader jump served 2 aces for a 6-1 lead and a timeout by Soda Springs. After the timeout, Rehder scored a kill to make it 7-1.
After 5 straight sideouts, Soda Springs scored a point while serving to cut the lead to 4 at 9-5.
Geis scored a kill to make it 10-5. After 5 more sideouts Prairie led 12-8. Soda Springs scored another point while serving to pull within 3 but Enneking then scored a kill on a dig to make it 13-9.
Schlader served up an ace then the match ended on an under the net violation by Soda Springs for a 15-9 Prairie win.
Schlader had 24 kills, including a block, with 7 aces and 1 assist.
Rehder had 12 kills and 5 aces. Geis had 8 kills, including a block, with 1 assist and 3 aces. Enneking had 8 kills, 5 assists and 2 aces. Riener had 5 kills, including 2 blocks, with 2 assists. Emhoff had 5 kills, 1 assist and 5 aces. Schumacher had 4 kills, 44 assists and 6 aces.
Vs. C.V.
The match against C.V. wound up as a 3-game sweep but it didn’t feel like that over the first two games.
In the opener Prairie jumped out to a 4-1 lead as Schlader scored a couple of aces and Rehder and Riener each added a kill.

Prairie tied it on a kill by Rehder and Enneking served 2 aces to give them the lead. Prairie never again surrendered the lead but couldn’t seem to shake the Rams who kept rallying to keep it close.
Prairie took a 6 point lead at 16-10 after 2 aces by Schlader but C.V. rallied to pull within 3 at 18-15.
Prairie then scored 4 straight for a 22-15 lead and held off the Rams who got no closer than 5 the rest of the game.
In the second game C.V. jumped out to a 0-4 lead. Prairie came back to tie it at 4-4 as Schumacher served 2 aces and Schlader and Wemhoff each scored a kill. The Rams however took back the lead at 4-7.
A bricked serve ended their run and Schlader then served 6 straight points to put Prairie on top for good, 11-7. She scored 3 aces with her jump serve while Rehder scored 3 kills.
C.V. twice got back within 2 at 11-9 and 15-13 but each time Prairie surged ahead again.
Prairie’s biggest lead of the game was the final score of 25-16 with Enneking scoring the game-ending kill.
Prairie then dominated the third game as Schumacher served them to a 3-0 lead and then Schlader served them to a 7-1 lead.
Prairie added to the lead throughout the game to win going away by 14.
For the match Schlader had 15 kills, 11 aces and an assist. Rehder had 9 kills, 2 aces and an assist. Geis had 5 kills and an ace. Enneking had 4 kills, 3 aces and 2 assists. Wemhoff had 4 kills, 2 aces and 3 assists. Riener had 3 kills and 1 assist. Schumacher had 2 kills, 5 aces and 33 assists.
Prairie is now 2-0 in best 3 of 5 matches and 1-0 in league play.
The JV team also beat C.V. but had a tougher time of it 25-18, 19-25, 15-11.
Prairie jumped out to leads of 7-0 and 11-1 in the opening game. TamdenPecarovich had 3 aces in a 6-point run and Kaylie Lockett served 3 straight aces.
C.V. was able to cut the lead down to 7 at 15-8 but Prairie then scored 5 straight for a 20-8 lead with Ashlyn North scoring an ace and Ellie Nuxoll had 4 kills.
C.V. then put together a 6 point rally to pull within 6 at 22-16 but Prairie was able to hold them off for the win.
Prairie took the early lead in the second game and led by as many as 3 at 10-7. C.V. then scored 8 of the next 9 points to take an 11-15 lead. They then were able to hold on and win by 6 to even the match.
C.V. then took a 0-4 lead in the deciding fifth game.
Prairie was able to tie it at 5 after an ace by Lockett but C.V. then scored 3 straight for a 5-8 lead before missing a serve.
Sydney Shears then took control of the game from the service line as she served 8 straight aces to get Prairie to match point at 14-8. C.V. finally was able to return a serve in play and scored 3 straight points before Nuxoll scored the match winning kill.
A scheduled C match wound up being cancelled.
