Lady Pirates win twice
The Prairie Lady Pirates volleyball team broke a 3-game losing streak with wins over Lapwai and Clearwater Valley. On Tuesday, Sept. 13 they swept Lapwai 25-10, 25-21, 25-18 at Lapwai and on Thursday, Sept. 15, they won in 3 games at Kooskia, 25-17, 25-17, 25-11.
At Lapwai
The match at Lapwai started out very lopsided for the Pirates as blew Lapwai out in the opening game. Lexi Schumacher started the game with 3 aces and Tara Schlader and Kristin Wemhoff each followed with long service runs. Schlader served 6 straight including 3 aces with Kylie Schumacher scoring 3 kills. Wemhoff served 4 aces and Alli Geis added a kill as Prairie took a 16-2 lead. Riley Enneking sends the ball over the net. She had a huge service run in the final game against Lapwai. Also shown from left are Lexi Schumacher, Julia Rehder and Alli Geis.
At that point Lapwai started scoring some points as Prairie outscored them just 9-8 the rest of the game.
In the second game Prairie scored first then Lapwai scored 5 straight points. Lapwai eventually built a 2-10 lead as they threatened to completely turn the tables from the first game.
Coach Julie Schumacher subbed in sophomore Kaylie Lockett and she seemed to provide a spark as she scored a kill for a sideout and then dug a spike that led to a kill by Schlader.
Lapwai led 4-11 when Geis scored a sideout kill and Riley Enneking went back to serve. She had 3 aces and Geis added 3 more kills as Prairie came back to take a 12-11 lead.
The two teams traded the lead a couple more times until Kylie Schumacher scored a kill and then a block on the next points for a 20-18 Prairie lead. Prairie never trailed again. They got to game point on a missed Lapwai serve but Lapwai fought off a game point before missing another serve to give Prairie the win.
In game 3 Prairie fell behind 1-3 and trailed much of the way, leading briefly at 9-8 after a kill by Taylor Riener.
They didn’t take the lead again until a kill by Geis sent Enneking to the service line. Enneking served 10 straight points to turn the game around She took over at 13-16 and had 4 aces on her jump serve while Geis scored 2 kills, Julia Rehder had a kill and Enneking and Lexi Schumacher each scored on free balls. Prairie took a 23-16 lead before a net foul cost Enneking her serve.
Lapwai scored but Schlader scored a kill on a dig and Rehder then served an ace for match point.
Geis had 10 kills, 1 assist and 1 ace in the match. Schlader had 9 kills, 1 assist and 3 aces. Kylie Schumacher had 8 kills which included 2 blocks. Rehder had 3 kills and an ace. Lockett had 3 kills and an assist. Riener had 3 kills. Enneking had 2 kills, 2 assists and 9 aces. Prairie scored 18 points when she was serving. Lexi Schumacher had 2 kills, 29 assists and 3 aces. Wemhoff had 1 kill and 6 aces.
In the JV game Prairie won 25-16, 27-25. There was no third game.
Prairie jumped out to a big lead in the first game as Tamden served them to a 6-0 lead with 3 aces plus 2 kills by Kaylie Lockett and a kill by Kylie Schumacher.
Schumacher then served 4 straight points as Prairie took a 13-3 lead. She had 2 aces and Aubree Rehder added a kill.
The rest of the game was played nearly even as Lapwai actually outscored Prairie 12-13 but they never got closer than 8 points.
Sydney Shears wound up scoring the game-winning kill after Lapwai had closed within 24-16.
Pecarovich served an ace to start the second game.
After a sideout, Ember Martin served Prairie to a 7-1 lead with an ace plus 3 kills by Hailey Hanson.
After another trade of sideouts, Hanson served Prairie to a 14-2 lead with 2 aces plus a kill each by Shears, Ashlyn North, Pecarovich and Ellie Nuxoll.
Lapwai then started to turn things around and got back into the game. They came all the way back to final take a lead at 21-22.  Prairie tied it on a kill by North and took the lead back on an ace by Hanson. A Lapwai sideout was followed by a kill by Shears to get to match point. Lapwai then scored the next 2 points to get a game point of their own.
It appeared Lapwai had won the game when Prairie was called for being out of rotation. Prairie asked the officials to make sure that was the case and it was decided they weren’t and a re-serve was called. Lapwai missed wide on the serve and North then served 2 aces to give Prairie the game and the match.
