Lady Pirates lose opener
The Prairie Lady Pirates opened their season with a 51-61 loss to Kendrick at Cottonwood Wednesday, Nov. 16. Kristin Uptmor drives towards the hoop against Kendrick.
The game was originally scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 17, but moved up to accommodate the Kendrick players traveling to Pocatello for the state championship football game. (Which was won by Kendrick, the only northern Idaho state champion this year.)
The game was close until the fourth quarter when Kendrick pulled away with a late 0-9 scoring run.
The first quarter saw several lead changes as Prairie scored first on a lay-up by Kristin Wemhoff but Kendrick answered with a 3-pointer. Each team then had a 5-0 run as the lead changed hands twice more. Wemhoff sank a 3 to put Prairie up 10-8.
Kendrick tied it at 10 but Tara Schlader scored to put Prairie up 12-10. Another 3 by Kendrick made it 12-13 but Kylie Schumacher scored inside to put Prairie back on top 14-13. Prairie was unable to retake the lead until late in the half although they tied it on a 3-point play by Wemhoff that made it 17-17 and again at 19-19 when Wemhoff scored off a feed from Schlader. Kendrick then hit a 3 to make it 19-22 at the end of the first quarter.
The Pirates fell behind by as many as 7 in the second quarter at 21-28.
They trailed by 6 after a 3 by Kendrick made it 27-33 with 2:20 left in the half. Prairie then scored 7 straight points to retake the lead. Lexi Schumacher hit a 3-pointer and then scored on a feed from Kylie Schumacher. Wemhoff sank 2 free throws with 12 seconds left that gave Prairie a 34-33 lead. Kendrick answered with a free throw that tied it at the half, 34-34.
Wemhoff opened the second half scoring with a 3-pointer then Prairie went into a nearly 4 minute scoring drought during which Schlader picked up her fourth foul and went to the bench for the rest of the quarter.
Kendrick scored 6 straight to take a 37-40 lead. Wemhoff scored at the 1:47 mark to cut the deficit to 1 but Kendrick answered with a basket to take a 39-42 lead into the fourth quarter.
The Tigers opened the fourth quarter with a 2-7 run to take a 41-49 lead. Alli Geis scored Prairie’s 2 points in that span on a baseline shot.
At the end of that run Schlader picked up her fifth foul. That led to Prairie playing with 1 senior, 1 sophomore and 3 freshmen for a long stretch as Wemhoff, Lexi Schumacher, Kylie Schumacher, Hailey Hanson and Sage Elven got a long stretch of time together on the floor.
Hanson is the one that broke the scoring drought with a banked in 3 points and Lexi Schumacher also sank a 3-pointer that got Prairie back within 2 at 47-49 with 4 minutes to play. After a Kendrick free throw, Kylie Schumacher scored to pull the Pirates within 1 at 49-50 with 3:10 left.
Kendrick then went on a 0-9 scoring run to go up 49-59 with just 45 seconds left. Geis scored to break the scoring drought but those were Prairie’s final points of the game. Kendrick added 2 free throws to win by 10.
Wemhoff scored 21 points and added 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals to lead the team in all those categories as well. Lexi Schumacher scored 10 points while Schlader scored 7. Hanson scored 5 and Kylie Schumacher and Geis added 4 each.

Kendrick also won the JV game, edging the Lady Pirates 31-32.
Prairie led for the entire first half but an ice-cold third quarter where they went 0 for 16 from the field and scored just 1 point enabled Kendrick to erase an 8 point halftime deficit.
Prairie jumped out to a 7-0 lead and led 11-3 after 1 quarter as Sage Elven scored 6 and Kailey Lockett scored 4.
Prairie maintained their lead through the second quarter as Aubree Rehder, Lockett, Elven and Ellie Nuxoll each scored 2 points. Prairie led 19-11 at the half.
Sarah Lustig scored Prairie’s only third quarter point after Kendrick opened the second half with a 0-5 run. Her free throw made it 20-16. Kendrick then closed the third quarter with a 0-7 run to take a 20-23 lead into the fourth quarter.
Elven, who as a varsity swing player, sat out the third quarter but returned in the fourth and scored 7 of Prairie’s first 8 points in the fourth quarter as Prairie took a 28-27 lead with 3:49 left. Nuxoll added a basket with 3:00 left for a 30-27 lead.
Kendrick then scored the next 5 points to retake the lead at 30-32 in the final seconds.
