Lady Pirates win big at Genesee
The Prairie Lady Pirates bounced back from a season opening loss with a big win in their league opener as they won 71-25 at Genesee last Tuesday, Nov. 22. Kristin Wemhoff scores 2 of her 29 points at Genesee after having stolen the ball.
Kylie Schumacher opened the scoring with a putback and Kristin Wemhoff followed with a drive to the hoop for a lay-up. Genesee answered with a 3-pointer but Prairie then scored 10 straight points to take a 14-3 lead. Wemhoff scored the first 8 of those 10 points and Kylie Schumacher added the final two.
Genesee closed out the first quarter with another 3-pointer to make it 14-6 but had hit just 2 of 13 shots in the quarter.
Prairie opened the second quarter with a 16-0 run. Wemhoff scored 2 free throws then stole the ball and scored to make it 18-6. Tara Schlader scored back-to-back baskets and Hailey Hanson then hit a 3-pointer. Lexi Schumacher scored 2 free throws then capped off the run with a 3-pointer to make it 30-7.
Genesee finally got back on the scoreboard by hitting 3 of 4 free throws but Hanson hit a shot at the buzzer to make it 32-9 for the Pirates.
Genesee attempted just 3 shots in the quarter and committed 12 turnovers as Prairie shut them down with both full-court pressure and a half-court trap.
Prairie led 32-9 at the half with Wemhoff outscoring the Bulldogs 14-9 all by herself.
Prairie started the second half with a 13-2 run. Schlader scored a putback to open the second half scoring and Wemhoff followed with a 3-pointer. After a Genesee basket Prairie got baskets from Lexi Schumacher, Wemhoff, Schlader and Wemhoff again for a 45-11 lead.
After a Genesee free throw, Prairie closed out the third quarter with 8 straight points as Schlader scored a pair of baskets then Wemhoff scored a pair of baskets.
With a 53-12 lead after 3 quarters the running clock mercy rule was invoked.
Prairie cut back on the defensive pressure and Genesee was able to break through for 13 fourth quarter points, more than doubling their score. Despite that Prairie this outscored them 18-13 and had a 10-0 run at one point that took the lead from 59-20 to 69-20.
For the game Wemhoff wound up outscoring the Bulldogs with 29 points and added 13 rebounds, 6 steals and 6 assists, leading the team in all but rebounds. Schlader added 18 points and a team-high 20 rebounds as well as 5 steals.
Kylie Schumacher scored 8, Lexi Schumacher 7, Hanson 5 and Sydney Shears and Kaylie Lockett scored 2 each.
Prairie outrebounded Genesee by a 2-1 margin, 56-28. Kylie Schumacher almost made it 3 players with double figures in rebounds as she had 9.
Prairie connected on 32 of 86 shots, 37%, and 4 of 6 free throws, 67%. Genesee was 8 for 35 from the field, 23%, and 4 for 9 at the line, 44%. Genesee was 3 for 26 from the field in the first 3 quarters.
For the game Prairie forced the Bulldogs into 30 turnovers while committing 13.
Prairie is now 1-1 on the season and 1-0 in league play.
The JV game was just 2 quarters due to illness and injuries that led to a lack of players for Genesee.
Despite that Sage Elven still managed a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds as she led Prairie toa 20-6 win.
Elven scored the first 4 points of the game as Prairie took a 4-0 lead. After a Genesee basket, Avery Riener and Sydney Shears each scored a basket as Prairie led 8-2 after one quarter.
Elven scored 10 of Prairie’s 12 second quarter points with Sarah Lustig scoring the other 2.
Elven scored the first 4 points of the quarter then Genesee made a 3. Prairie then scored 8 straight as Elven made a free throw then Lustig scored. Elven then hit a 2-pointer and a 3-pointer for a 20-5 lead. Genesee scored a free throw for the game’s final point.
Elven scored 14 while Riener, Shears and Lustig scored 2 each.
Lustig added 7 rebounds as Prairie outrebounded Genesee 26-14.
Elven added 7 steals and Shears, Elven, Lockett and Lustig each had 1 assist.
The JV’s were 9 for 38 from the field, 24%, and 1 for 4 at the line, 25%. Genesee was 2 for 8 from the field, 25%, and 1 for 3 at the line, 33%.
Prairie forced Genesee into 28 turnovers in just 2 quarters of play while committing 12.
