Lady Pirates edged by Lapwai
For the second straight season the Prairie Lady Pirates lost at Lapwai on a buzzer-beating shot after holding the lead late in the game. This time they lost on a 3-pointer 50-52 on Tuesday, Dec. 6.
Lapwai started the game like they were going to blow Prairie out of the gym as they jumped out to a 0-7 lead. Prairie finally scored when Kristin Wemhoff put back her own missed shot at the 5:05 mark of the first quarter.
Prairie managed to get back within 2 at 9-11 in the first quarter after a putback by Tara Schlader but Lapwai scored to make it 9-13 at the end of the quarter. Kristin Wemhoff drives toward the ball down the floor. Also shown is Kylie Schumacher.
Prairie opened the second quarter with a 6-0 run to take their first lead of the game. Schlader scored on a feed from Lexi Schumacher. A steal by Kylie Schumacher led to a lay-up by Wemhoff to tie the game. Wemhoff then stole the ball and drove for a lay-up to put Prairie ahead at the 7:05 mark of the second quarter.
Lapwai tied it but a basket each by Wemhoff and Schlader made it 19-15 with 6:22 left in the half. Lapwai scored 4 straight to tie it but an 8-0 run by Prairie put the Pirates up 27-19. Schlader scored inside then Lexi Schumacher and Wemhoff each scored a 3-pointer to put Prairie up 8 with 1:17 left in the half.

Prairie came right back with their own run as they outscored Lapwai 9-2 over the next 3 minutes to take a 38-34 lead. Wemhoff started it with 2 free throws. Schlader scored on an inbounds play and Wemhoff drove in for a lay-up. After a Lapwai basket, Wemhoff scored a free throw and Schlader scored inside.

Lapwai scored twice to retake the lead at 45-47 with 3:03 left.
Kylie Schumacher tied it with a lay-up at the 2:46 mark. Wemhoff then put Prairie up 49-47 with 1:20 to play when she ran under a full court inbounds pass from Schlader and converted a lay-up.
Prairie really should have led by several more points but missed a string of 7 straight free throws between Kylie Schumacher’s make with 5:32 left and Wemhoff’s free throw with 35 seconds left that gave Prairie a 50-47 lead.
Lapwai scored with 6.7 seconds left and Prairie again tried the full-court inbounds pass. Wemhoff was unable to handle the ball though and it went out of bounds off her knee with just over 5 seconds left.
At that point Prairie still had 3 fouls to give before Lapwai would be shooting 1 and 1’s. Coach Lori Mader wanted her players to foul the Lapwai player who got the inbounds pass to force them to have to run another inbounds play. However the Lapwai player who got the ball was able to quickly feed it downcourt to freshman Skylin Parrish, who swished a 3-point shot as the buzzer sounded.
Wemhoff wound up leading all scorers with 23 points while Schlader added 16. Lexi Schumacher scored 7 and Kylie Schumacher scored 4.
