| School Board meets
The school board held their July meeting Monday, July 17. Madison Shears was approved for hire to fill the junior/senior high paraprofessional position. She was also approved for hire as the JV volleyball coach with Stacy Goicoa approved for hire as the C team coach. The bus rental rates, the per diem rates and the facility use rates were all approved without change from last year. Hot lunch rates saw only the student rate increase with Elementary students now at $2.50 and junior/senior high school students charged $3.00. Adult and breakfast rates stayed the same. Extra-curricular assignments were approved for 2023-24 although there are still a couple of positions that need to be filled. See below for a list of assignments. The wellness policy was discussed with superintendent Jon Rehder adding some more verbiage to update the policy. It was approved by the Board and it will now be posted on the school’s food service website. The second reading of the policy updates was done. Board member Pat Alfrey had gone over the suggested changes and had some questions. The third reading and approval of the changes will be done at the August meeting. Policy 5345 was reviewed dealing with evaluation of certified personnel. Rehder suggested some changes and the policy was approved by the board with those changes. In the reports Matt Elven reported that Laurie Lorentz, Rick Forsmann and Julia Rehder are doing a great job getting the school ready for the upcoming school year. He also reported the Dusk Til Dawn and Alumni Volleyball tournaments went well. St. Mary’s Clinic will have a Sports Physical Clinic on August 1 for all 7th, 9th and 11th grade athletes from 5 to 6:30 p.m. The Fall sports Meeting will be held August 7 from 6:30 to 7:30 at the high school cafeteria. August 7 is also the first day fall sports teams will be able to practice. Football will likely start a few days later as they don’t have a game until Sept. 1. Jr./Sr. High registration will be August 15 from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the school. Jon Rehder reported that they wound up having a summer school. At first no one wanted to do it but then at the last minute Becky Higgins, Megan Frei, Megan Rambo, Cami Shears, Erin Shears and Vikki Riener all wound up helping out. It was held Jun 27-29, July 5-7 and July 11-13 with 32 total students attending with a 96% attendance rate. Back to school night is set for Monday, August 28 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Elementary School. School supply lists are as are the class lists. In his facilities report Rehder said the classroom addition is coming along although cutting through the 1950’s era concrete has put them behind. His new projection for completion is October 1 which will lead to some scrambling the first month of school. All the teachers affected are aware of it and they will make do. Jerry Richardson volunteered to paint the new addition as well as the U shape on the south/west side. The body of the building will be painted a light gray with the beams and doors painted a dark gray. The rest of the building won’t get painted until next year due to time and money. The new freezer at the high school kitchen is in place. A new plug in needs to be added. The new refrigerator at the Elementary School kitchen has been installed and is ready for use. The company sent the wrong dishwasher for the Elementary School kitchen. They got a 70” tall unit when it should have been a 60” one. The correct one has been ordered. It was delivered on July 11. They will also get the correct one ordered for the high school. The elementary and junior/senior high gym floors have been refinished. The high school floor is off limits until Aug. 7, the first day of volleyball practice, while the elementary gym is shut down until school starts. It was decided to skip the Auxiliary Gym this year. In his superintendent’s report he reported several of the surplus items sold but others were either lowballed or didn’t receive bids. Now that they have gone through the bid process they can sell the other items outright. There has been interest shown in several of those items. Dave Shears is working on ordering a new school bus for the 2024-25 school year. New outlets have been installed for the shot clocks at the high school gym. The plan is to install the clocks in early September which will give them time to test them out prior to basketball season. Sod from the new addition location was relocated to fill in low spots on the school grounds as well as stressed grass areas. Elven and Rehder will both be attending the admin conference in Boise August 2-3. Future agenda items include the third reading of the policies and a review of the facility rental agreement. The meeting adjourned at 8:27 p.m. The next regular meeting is Monday, August 21 at 7 p.m. Prairie Extracurricular Assignments
