Lady Pirates win first two District games Vs. C.V.
The game against C.V. went about like the two previous
games against the Rams. Prairie jumped out to an 8-0 lead. C.V. scored
a free throw, then P rairie finished off the first quarter with 21 straight points and then outscored the Rams 16-0 in the second quarter.
Lexi and Kylie Schumacher each scored 8 points in the opening quarter while Sage Elven scored 6 in the second quarter. Kylie Schumacher opened the second half with 2 free throws to make it 39 straight points. C.V. then made their first basket of the game, a 3-pointer. Prairie scored another 17 straight before C.V. scored again. It was 66-8 heading into the fourth quarter. Prairie outscored C.V. 8-0 in the running clock fourth quarter. Kylie Schumacher wound up with 24 points to lead the Pirates in scoring. Lexi Schumacher scored 16 while Elven scored 12. Sydney Shears added 6 points. Hailey Hanson and Aubree Rehder each scored 5. Alli Geis scored 4. Ellie Nuxoll scored 3 and Nadia Cash scored 1. Prairie had a 49-28 rebounding edge. Kylie Schumacher and Nuxoll each had 9 rebounds to lead the team while Elven had 8 and Shears had 7. Hanson had 5 steals and 6 assists while Lexi Schumacher and Cash each had 4 steals. Defense dominated in the Prairie-Kamiah matchup as
neither team scored more than 11 points in a quarter until the fourth
quarter.
Prairie jumped out to an early 6-0 lead as Lexi Schumacher, Elven and Kylie Schumacher each scored a basket. Kamiah then took over and scored 10 straight points to take their first lead of the game.
A running 1-hander in the lane by Lexi Schumacher and a buzzer-beating
lay-up by Hanson tied it at 10 at the end of the first quarter.
Prairie was held to just 4 points in the second quarter, 2 free throws by Hanson and putback by Elven. However, after Elven’s putback the score was tied at 14-14. Kamiah then scored the final 4 points of the half to take a 14-18 halftime lead. Kamiah scored to open the third quarter. Prairie then got a 3 from Lexi Schumacher, a midrange jumper from Elven and a lay-up from Lexi Schumacher to take their first lead since the score was 6-5. Kamiah then scored 6 straight points to retake the lead. A basket each by Kylie Schumacher and Elven cut the deficit to 25-26 after 3 quarters. Shears put Prairie back on top to open the fourth quarter with a putback. Kamiah answered then Kylie Schumacher made 2 free throws to put Prairie back on top. A 3 by Kamiah’s Karlee Skinner gave the Kubs what turned out to be their final lead of the game. Lexi Schumacher then came up big with back-to-back 3-pointers to give Prairie a 35-31 lead with 5:35 to play. Kamiah’s Emma Krogh then converted a 3-point play to cut the lead to 1. Lexi Schumacher answered with a drive to the hoop. A steal and drive for a lay-up by Kamiah’s Laney Landmark again cut the lead to 1 with 3:27 left. A steal by Elven led to a 3-point play but Landmark answered with a 3-pointer to again cut the lead to 1 with 2:42 left. That turned out to be Kamiah’s final points. Kylie Schumacher made the second of 2 free throws with 2:30 left for a 41-39 lead. A big defensive rebound by Shears led to a lay-up by Kylie Schumacher. Another big defensive rebound, this time by Hanson, led to 2 free throw attempts by Lexi Schumacher with 11 seconds left. She missed both but Elven grabbed the offensive rebound. That led to 2 more free throws by Lexi and this time she made both with 6 seconds left to give Prairie a 6-point lead. That turned out to be the final margin. Lexi Schumacher scored 19 to lead all scorers. Elven added 11 points while Kylie Schumacher scored 9. Hanson scored 4 and Shears scored 2. Elven had a double-double with 11 rebounds as she led Prairie to a 32-24 edge on the boards. Elven also had 6 of Prairie’s 8 steals in the game. Hanson and Geis each had 1. Elven and Lexi Schumacher each had 2 assists. Prairie was 17 for 44 from the field, 39%, and 8 for 13 at the line, 62%. Kamiah was 14 for 40 from the field, 35%, and 4 for 6 at the line, 67%. Kamiah was led in scoring by Landmark, who had 11 points while Skinner had 9 on three 3-pointers. Prairie is now 16-6 on the season and have won 10 straight games and are 10-0 in 2024.
