December is a good time for Long-Range Planning, considering how we can become sustaining stewards of ecology and environment while growing our immediate resources. Joan has reviewed the 1975 book, The Hindenburg, by Michael M. Mooney. In this book Mr. Mooney records the story of the large airship, the Hindenburg, and several other large airships belonging to the Zeppelin Company in Germany in the 1930s. The author relates that these airships were used for transatlantic flight prior to the commercial use of airplanes. The ships were filled with extremely explosive hydrogen gas for lift. The author describes the size and layout of the airships, as well as their interiors and passenger capabilities. He also described the several transatlantic flights made in the mid-1930s, and the relationship between the Zeppelin company and then-German Chancellor A. Hitler. Mr. Mooney then details the flight of the Hindenburg from Frankfurt, Germany to a landing location in New Jersey. One of the crew members on the flight planted a bomb within one of the hydrogen fuel cells in retribution for some maltreatment of German citizens by the German SS. The crewman had set the bomb timer to explode after the ship landed, but either it went off early, or he had set it incorrectly; several passengers and crew were killed or injured. No airships were ever flown after the Hindenburg incident. December is Write To A Friend Month. Sunday 21 December is Crossword Puzzle Day, National Short Story Day, and Winter Solstice – the first day of winter. Saturday 27 December is First Quarter Moon.
