3 earn medals at Pomeroy
3 Prairie wrestlers earned medals at the Pomeroy Christmas Bash held Monday, Dec. 29 at Pomeroy.
Avery Schacher led the way by taking first place in the girls 170 lbs. weight class.
 Ashton Martin earned his first ever tournament medal as he took second in the boys 157 lbs. weight class while Devon Poxleitner also picked up his first ever tournament medal by taking third in the boys 165 lbs. weight class.
Schacher’s bracket was a round-robin since there were just 5 wrestlers in her class. She went 4-0, winning all 4 matches by pin. In her first match she pinned Rhianne Arthur of Lapwai in 1:30. In her second matched she pinned Kinsley Prather of Potlatch in 58 seconds. In her third match she pinned Natalie Katsel of Lind-Ritzville (WA) in 25 seconds. Her final match amounted to the championship match as Carson Kuehne of Wilbur-Creston (WA) was also 3-0. This match went into the second period before Schacher scored a pin at the 2:31 mark.
Schacher earned 14 team points on the day giving Prairie a tie for 8th place in the team standings out of 13 teams.
Martin earned a first round bye in his bracket. In the quarterfinals he faced Connor Houston of Wilbur-Creston who scored the opening takedown. About 1:30 into the match Martin was able to score a reversal and went right to a pin at the 1:36 mark. In the semifinals, Martin duplicated his first match effort against Jackson Hutchens of Pomeroy. Hutchens scored a takedown and then 1:19 into the match, Martin scored a reversal and wound up winning by pin with just 5 seconds left in the opening period at the 1:55 mark. In the championship match he faced Braxden Gransbery of Colfax. Martin scored the initial takedown 42 seconds into the match. 13 seconds later Gransbery was able to score an escape and quickly scored a takedown and wound up winning by pin at the 1:05 mark. That left Martin with the second place medal.
In the 165 lbs. bracket Poxleitner had an opening round bye. In the quarterfinal he faced Carson Reedy of Asotin. Reedy dominated the match although Poxleitner was able to avoid a pin as he lost by major decision, 5-16. After receiving a bye in the consolation bracket, Poxleitner faced Dasen Howarth of Lapwai in the consolation quarterfinals. He scored a quick takedown and won by pin in just 30 seconds. In the consolation semifinals he faced Alex Chavez-Portillo of River View, WA. Chavez-Portillo scored the initials take down 45 seconds into the match. Poxleitner scored a reversal 3 seconds later and scored a 2-point near fall at the 1st period buzzer. They started the second period in neutral position and Poxleitner scored a takedown 27 seconds into the second period and followed with a pin at the 1:42 mark of the match. In the consolation final he ran into Reedy again. This time it was completely different. Neither wrestler scored in the 1 minute first period. They started the second period in neutral position. Reedy scored a takedown but 7 seconds later Poxleitner scored a reversal and was able to pin Reedy at the 2:21 mark to earn a third place medal, avenging his only loss of the day.
Wrestling at 138 lbs., Zach Schumacher lost by pin in 59 seconds to Tomas Gonzalez of Kamiah. In his first consolation round match he faced Elijah Miller of Pomeroy. Schumacher scored a takedown 19 seconds into the match and 10 seconds later he won by pin. According to coach Jeff North, that was Schumacher’s first ever win. In the next round of consolation he faced Buckminster Aiken of Asotin. Aiken scored a penalty point and then a takedown in the first period. Schumacher scored on a penalty at the buzzer. They started neutral in the second period and Aiken scored a takedown and then won by pin at the 1:42 mark to end Schumacher’s day.
At 175 lbs. Carson Lockert received a first round bye and then faced Eston Flodin of Colfax in the quarterfinals. 19 seconds in Lockart scored a takedown and then won by pin at the 38 second mark. In the semifinals Lockert faced Forest Bray of Pomeroy. Lockart was quickly taken down and lost by pin in just 13 seconds. In the consolation semifinal Lockart faced Julian Barrera of River View, WA. Neither wrestler scored in the 1 minute first period. Lockart started the second period in the down position and was never able to get loose as Barrera scored a near fall at the 2:03 mark for a 0-4 lead and then won by pin at the 2:28 mark to end Lockart’s day.
At 285 lbs. Raymond Cross faced Emmett Cunningham of Enterprise, OR in the opening round. He was taken down 7 seconds into the match lost by pin at the 39 second mark. In the first round of consolation her faced Jacob Keck of Potlatch and was pinned just 19 seconds into the match.
As a team the boys scored 45 points, good for 9th place out of 16 teams.
The team’s next action is at the Kamiah Invite on Wednesday, January 7 at 5 p.m.
