Pirates win at Orofino
The Prairie Pirates started 2025 with a 61-50 win at Orofino Monday, Jan. 6.
Prairie scored first on a putback by Levi Gehring. Orofino then scored 7 straight points and led much of the first half. Levi Gehring in the lane at Orofino. In the background is Nate Forsmann.
Briggs Rambo scored to make it 4-7. After an Orofino basket Nate Forsmann converted a 3-point play and Rambo made the first of 2 free throws to cut the lead to 1. After an Orofino free throw, Forsmann tied it with a lay-up.
Orofino then scored to take a 10-12 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Rambo tied it with a lay-up to open the second quarter. Orofino answered with a 3. Gehring made a lay-up then Orofino answered. Gehring scored again and Orofino answered with a free throw. Riley Shears tied it with a pair of free throws.
Orofino then scored 5 straight. Phil Schwartz hit a 3 and Orofino answered with a basket to make it 21-25.
That’s when Prairie made their surge into the lead. Shears drove for a lay-up. Chase VonBargen then hit a 3 to give Prairie their first lead since it was 2-0. Rambo added a lay-up to make it 28-25.
Orofino answered with a basket but Gehring scored inside and Shears sank a 3 at the buzzer to give Prairie a 33-27 lead at the half.
Forsmann scored on an inbounds feed from Schwartz for the first points of the second half. Orofino scored but Forsmann answered with a lay-up. Orofino converted a 3-point play but 2 baskets by Rambo gave Prairie a 41-32 lead.
After a basket by Orofino, Prairie closed out the third quarter with a 7-0 run. Forsmann converted a 3-point play. A steal by Forsmann then led to a lay-up by Shears and Forsmann made another lay-up to make it 48-34 after 3 quarters.
A Forsmann putback opened the fourth quarter scoring to give Prairie their biggest lead of the game at 50-34.
Orofino hit a 3 but Rambo added with a putback of his own miss. After another Orofino basket, Matt Wemhoff made a free throw and Shears drove for a lay-up to equal their biggest lead at 55-39.
Orofino scored 4 straight but a free throw by Wemhoff and a basket by Rambo made it 58-43 with 2:33 to play.
After an Orofino Free throw, Rambo scored to again put Prairie up by 16 with 1:28 to play at 60-44.
Orofino sank a pair of 3’s in the final minute while Shears scored a free throw to make the final margin of 11 points.
Rambo led 3 Pirates in double figures with 17 points. Forsmann scored 16 and Shears scored 12. Gehring added 8 points while Schwartz and VonBargen each scored 3 and Wemhoff scored 2.
Prairie had a 33-26 edge on the boards. Forsmann had 8 rebounds to lead the Pirates while Rambo had 7.
Forsmann had 4 steals and Schwartz had 5 assists.
Prairie was 25 for 49 from the field, 51%, and 8 for 14 at the line, 57%. Orofino was 20 for 49 from the field, 41%, and 4 for 9 at the line, 44%.
Prairie is now 5-3 on the season.
Prairie also won the JV game 54-37.
The first quarter went back and forth as Orofino scored first with a free throw and Prairie took their first lead when Jackson Enneking made 2 free throws.
Orofino then took the lead with a basket but Prairie answered with a basket by Ben Secrest. After an Orofino basket, Secrest again put Prairie back on top with a lay-up. After another Orofino basket, Max Rehder closed out the first quarter with a 3-pointers for a 9-7 Prairie lead at the break.
Orofino tied it to start the second quarter but Prairie then sank three consecutive 3-pointers to take the lead for good. Chase VonBargen started it then Kade Quintal and Rehder each followed with a 3 to make it 18-9.
Orofino was able to rally back within 3 at 20-17 during a 2-8 run where VonBargen’s 2 free throws were Prairie’s only points.
Kento Morita broke the scoring drought when he banked in a 3 to beat the shot clock. After another Orofino basket, Nathan Weber scored a free throw and then a lay-up to five Prairie a 26-19 lead at the half.
Prairie dominated the third quarter, outscoring Orofino 17-10.
Quintal opened the third quarter scoring with a basket. After Orofino answered, Prairie went on a 13-2 scoring run. Secrest started it with a lay-up. Enneking followed with a basket and Rehder added a free throw. After an Orofino basket, Quintal sank a 3 and Secrest made a free throw. Quintal made 2 free throws and Secrest closed out the run with a basket for a 41-23 lead.
Orofino closed out the quarter with a 2-6 run as Secrest scored for Prairie. Prairie led 43-29 after 3.
Quintal opened the fourth quarter with a 3-point play and Rehder followed with a turn-around shot in the lane. Orofino scored a pair of baskets but Prairie answered with a basket by Caden Armbrust and 2 free throws and a basket by Rehder for a 54-33 lead. Orofino then scored the game’s final 4 points.
Quintal and Rehder each scored 13 to lead the team. Secrest was also in double figures with 11 points. VonBargen scored 5, Enneking 4, Morita and Weber 3 each and Armbrust 2.
Prairie had a 35-21 advantage on the boards led by Secrest with 7 and Quintal with 6.
Quintal and Enneking each had 4 steals and Rehder had 3. Quintal led in assists with 4 with 7 different players collecting at least 1 assist.
The JVs were 19 for 48 from the field, 40%, and 11 for 16 at the line, 69%. Orofino was 17 for 39 from the field, 44%, and 2 for 9 from the line, 22%.

Chase VonBargen's 3 in the second quarter gave Prairie the lead for good.

Riley Shears made a 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer that gave Prairie a 33-27 lead heading to the locker room.
